On her way to school minding her own, she’s shot by a member of the Taliban. At only sixteen years old, she’s winning Nobel Prizes. For the good of others, writing anonymous blogs and putting herself in danger. This is Malala Yousafzai. Despite her young age, Malala is already fighting to make a difference in the lives of school girls in Pakistan. (Malala’s story).
Malala was born on July, 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, named her after Pashtun heroine, Malalai. Ziauddin was also known as an advocate for children’s education at the school he taught at, which inspired Malala. Over a few years, girls were being restricted from attending school by the Taliban. Following this, the Taliban decided upon killing the young activist. They acted on their decision on October 9, 2012. While on the bus to school, she was asked for by name by a masked gunman and shot multiple times. Malala was moved to a hospital, but transported to a critical care unit in the United Kingdom, where they could better deal with military-type injuries. She was released in 2013 and stayed in the UK with her family, who moved to be with her. Malala continued her schooling and activism once she was well. While she was hospitalized, there were protests across Pakistan, in her honor, for equal rights. Moreover, there was a right to education petition signed by over two million people in her honor. In addition, she and her father co-founded the Malala Fund for awareness of impact on girls’ education. On December 10, 2014, Malala won a Nobel Peace Prize; she then became the youngest ever to win the prize.
