Malala's Thoughts: Article Analysis

It began as an ordinary day in Mingora, Pakistan, for a young girl returning home from school on her school bus. Suddenly, a masked gunman rushed into the bus and shouted, “Who is Malala?” Her friends on the bus looked back at her, and in the blink of an eye she was shot on the left side of her face. This incident was the spark that ignited a call for change in education around the world. Malala Yousafzai was the face of this change. She made significant contributions to female education rights by being an education activist and urging children to speak out and fight for their rights. She forever changed the lives of Pakistani girls who today benefit from free education and resources with numerous schools around their country.

Kristen Lewis’ article, “Malala the Powerful” was about how a girl as shot in the head by the terrorist group, the Taliban because she was using her voice to stand up and say everyone deserves an education, especially girls. In Pakistan, the religion is strict therefore the Taliban decided to control the government, that made life for women and girls brutal. The Taliban ordered that girls were not allowed to attend school. Malala completely disagreed so she used her voice on the internet incognito to bring awareness about what was happening. Across the world people think of Malala Yousafzai as one of the most revolutionary women in the world for her stance against heresy and gender discrimination. She has showed through example that she is willing to give her life in the defense of her beliefs regarding women’s rights to education. Malala is an equal rights activist; she continually fights for women to have the same rights as all other people. Malala has endured a long and dangerous path to make people aware of the discrimination and dangers that women are facing in Pakistan and all over the world. Her famous journey and non-violent methods has had a profound effect and has resulted in the world taking a more active part in her fight for equal rights and women 's education.

In the article, Malala the Powerful by Kristen Lewis, she described how Malala and other people ruled by the Taliban around 2007, had to follow many harsh rules ordered from the Taliban. Many people perished because of not following the religious rules. Malala stood up to the Taliban while they ruled. She did not listen to the Taliban when they said that school was banned. She courageously stood up to the Taliban but yet still got shot. She crazily survived the shooting and is still alive and going to college today. Though the Taliban created huge challenges for Malala, she survived because she stood up to the Taliban with her great courage, and is getting a better education today.

The article, “Malala the Powerful” by Kristin Lewis, describes the roughness of Malala, a Jewish girl, who like many girl Jews, crumbled in the hands of Taliban. Malala was alive when the Taliban took over Pakistan. She and many other girl jews were kicked out of school and forced to follow all these stitched rules. In 2009, Malala took action and started a blog. She talked on T.V shows about how hard life was like and was standing up to the Taliban. In 2010, the Taliban shot Malala in the face but she and many other Jews still survived. Females are discriminated against, mistreated, and are valued less since women and girls are not allowed to attend school and higher education. There are approximately 35 million girls not enrolled in elementary school. This explains why two-thirds of illiterate people over the age of 15 are females. It’s a freedom and a privilege for people to be educated and have the right to go to school. In this speech Malala explains how her education was threatened by a man who believed girls were evil. So as she says, “Those who fought for their rights: Their right to live in peace. Their right to be treated with dignity. Their right to equality of opportunity. Their right to be educated”(Yousafzai 310). Malala stands up for herself and all the others who are worth fighting for, which is also a freedom; freedom of speech. She believes we need to take a stand and stand up for not just ourselves, but others around us too. “Dear sisters and brothers, now it’s time to speak up. The right to education is one important fundamental justice that everyone should have, but most times that right is denied. There 's many reasons why people, states or countries may not take education seriously. Pakistan is one country that has the most curtailment on education towards women. Malala Yousafazi became a young activist, she stood up for her people in Pakistan to restore the rights of education to women. Her journey began when she was just the age of fifteen; she was shot on her head near the school bus by the Taliban in 2012. After her surgery recovery, she addressed a speech to the youth in New York on July 12th. In 2013, Malala and her father co-founded the "Malala Fund" in supporting young girls like her. Malala accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on December tenth, 2014 with Indian children 's rights. She bravely continues to work hard and strive for education justice so that, one day, every child will receive an education.

Women that defend their rights face enormous risks every day and Malala is a perfect example of this. She is a perfect example of this because she was affected by this problem. An example of this is “In October 2012, on her bus-ride home from school, she was shot in the head by the Taliban for promoting girls’ right to education.” When the bullet hit her skin, the bone richoted it away and the bullet hit her eardrum instead. Once she fully recovered from the bullet to her head she began to fight for girls rights once again. To this day many girls and women still fight daily for the right to learn.

I am honored to be chosen to pick a speech and read it for the conference. I have chosen Malala Yousafzai’s speech on free education for women and children around the world. In the speech given by Malala Yousafzai on July 12, 2013 at the Youth takeover of the United Nations, she claims that we must take action and help fight for women’s rights and free education for all around the world, and that the acts of terrorism against women and children should be stopped. The speaker establishes the hopefulness for the women and children around the world who lack a basic education and are judged by their race and gender to give hope that they might be able to achieve a free education for all. She wrote this speech to inform the audience about the lack of education for women and children. Malala Yousafzai’s speech is the most moving out of the three choices because the speaker creates a powerful message by using anecdotes, repetition and ethos to convey her overall message to the audience.

Globally women do not have the same chances for an education like other women around the world. Malala Yousafzai is a prime example of women in Pakistan who are not allowed to have a good education like men in her country. As a young child, she defied the Taliban and demanded that all women get a fair education. Education might not be the cure of the world’s problem but it’s important to be knowledgeable. It’s important to have an education because without it, it makes a person vulnerable to be guided in the wrong direction. Not everyone believes education is important in life and especially for a woman. Malala Yousafzai tells us her story and her fight for education in her book I am Malala. She tells us about her families struggle for the right of education and not just education in general but education for woman. She was raised in Pakistan and its one the counties in which some people believe a woman should not go to school or have freedom. Education was not as easy for her as other girls around the world. Sometimes people don’t take education as a privileged but as a right, but unfortunately it’s not this case everywhere and it wasn’t the case for Malala. She was also able to see by firsthand how illiteracy can be a danger to a person and how others can take advantage of it.
