Diversifying Senior Management Positions
Problem
Is there a need for diversity in senior management positions? Today many companies are asking this question and taking proactive steps to determine whether or not diversity has an effect on the bottom line. The American workforce is in a constant state of change. Today the workforce is older, and consists of more females and members of ethnic minorities than ever before. Even still these changes are not enough. Women and minorities tend to be grouped in line and staff positions and in low management positions. Instead businesses would benefit if more women and minorities held senior management positions. (Llopis, 2011). This report will identify the benefits of workplace diversity in senior management positions followed by challenges associated with creating a diverse workforce as well as solutions to overcome these challenges.
Background
The Human Resource Department spends a great deal of time designing, establishing, and managing diversity in the workplace because they believe in the value of it. Yet, they still fall short. The United States Department of Labor states,

Diversity is a wonderful asset to an organization and brings with it many benefits. Employees bring in their own personal experiences and knowledge to the team (Burns & Kerby, 2012). Having diverse teams allows for the possibility to fix a problem or perfect a process by using different employee’s experiences and past knowledge to find solutions. A diverse workforce can drive economic growth and capture a greater share of the consumer market (Burns & Kerby, 2012). With diversity as a core value, the recruitment pool is widened to find the most qualified candidate and reduces employee turnover as a result. An organization can be highly competitive with a diversity initiative by adapting to a changing environment (Burns & Kerby, 2012).
The purpose of this paper is designed to introduce, educate, and promote diversity within your company. Your company will be shown the merits of diversity and how diversity within your organization can be a benefit. This paper will be broken down into three main areas: Benefits of Diversity, Challenges of Diversity, and Recommendations for an effective diversity within your organization..
From Hollywood to the the social sector, diversity, rather the lack thereof, has been a topic of conversation. Although many organizations have begun to advocate for diversity, more work must be done. Across the social sector,women and people of color remain severely underrepresented in leadership positions. Organizations must become intentional about creating a diverse workforce and implementing inclusive policies that foster positive work environments. When employees feel represented and included they are happier and more likely to contribute to fulfilling the organization's mission.
Business environments today display diversity, a numerical composition that reflects different kinds of people, such as men and women of different ethnic origins, educational experiences, and professional backgrounds (Beamish, Morrison, Inkpen, & Rosenzweig, 2003). A vast amount of organizations are emulating a diverse workforce. Fair treatment of employees is the responsibility of the human resource management team within a firm. Footsteps of past generations are the facilitating mechanism allowing today’s generation to participate in a safe and fair workplace. Diversity has been a hot-button topic for many of today’s companies. Diversity programming and initiatives are regularly implemented by organizations of all types and sizes. As it relates to an organization’s human resources operation, diversity will continue to be an ever-changing term as the work towards equitable treatment for all continues.

In 2015, the United States civilian labor force rose to 157.4 million (Unemployment rate nears prerecession level by end of 2015: Monthly Labor Review: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016). About half of the workforce were women and of the 157.4 million, about thirty-eight percent were non-white workers including Asian, Black, and Hispanic ethnicities. By 2024, it is projected that women will make up more than half of the United States labor force, in which, roughly twenty-three percent of the women will be of non-white ethnicities (Women 's Bureau (WB) Latest Annual Data - Labor force by sex, race and Hispanic ethnicity, 2015 annual averages and 2024 projections, n.d.). As women start to dominate the workforce, and younger workers continue to enter labor force, organizations in the United States are becoming more and more diverse. What was once dominated by white males, organizations are now a rich combination of different cultures, backgrounds and different belief systems. To ensure an ongoing efficient and productive work environment, a diversity training program should be put in place to address the tension and conflicts that arise from diversity in the workplace.
The topic of minorities in the workforce and how the struggle to accomplish equal treatment in today’s workforce is nothing new to our society. Organizations have been becoming increasingly diverse in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, and nationality. This diversity brings substantial potential benefits such as better decision making, greater creativity and innovation, and more successful marketing to different types of customers. But, increasing cultural differences within a workforce also bring potential costs in higher turnovers, interpersonal conflicts, and communicational breakdowns. The utilities of diversity training and the essential managerial skills required for effectively managing diversity will also be discussed.
The discrimination-and-fairness paradigm is considered the “dominant way” of understanding diversity by most organizations. It attempts to remove discrimination and create employment equality by seeking to increase diversity among employees. Progress is measured by how well the company is able to meet its diversity number goals but avoids looking deeper at the reality behind the numbers. (Thomas & Ely p. 81)
In response to the growing diversity in the workforce around the world, many companies have instituted specific policies and programs to enhance recruitment, inclusion, promotion, and retention of employees who are different from the privileged echelons of society. The privileged groups may vary from one country to the next. The workforce of the world is a dynamic environment, and in order for this dynamism to be put to use for the benefit of organizations, they must develop an effective strategy for managing diversity. Diversity in workforce “include, but are not limited to: age, ethnicity, ancestry, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, sexual orientation, educational background, geographic location, income, marital status, military experience, religious beliefs, parental status, and work experience”(Thomas 1992). Diversity in the workforce is initially perceived as a response toward the increasing diversity of the consumers in the market (Agocs & Burr, 1996). From there, it has been observed that capitalizing on existing differences among the employees provide benefits to the organization. Diversity in workforce fosters and encourages
