Manatee Paper Like elephants, manatees never forget. This means that anything that happens to none manatee will remain in it’s mind for ever. Every day manatees are being injured by people. They are harmless creatures that rely on us to keep them safe . I believe that manatees need more protection because they are already endangered and they have no way to fight back.
Last year alone over 15% of the Florida manatee population was killed by a human in a preventable way (Pittman). These preventable ways include polluting the waters, the use of fishing nets, and the wrongful usage of motor boats. Manatees have also been on the endangered species list since 1973. They first made it onto this list because their entire population

Manatees have been protected by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act since 1978 (Spivey). This act prohibits annoying, molesting, harassing, or disturbing any manatee to be found in or near the state. It also specifies that anyone who tries to kill, hunt, pursue, or capture a manatee would have serious repercussions. Even with all these laws there is still a growing number of manatee deaths throughout the state. When manatees were put on the endangered species list in 1973 they were also put under the protection of the endangered species organization. This organization has enforced four laws so far to protect manatees from future harm (Swart). This entitles the manatee population to a number of new laws and requirements put on the state of Florida to protect them . For manatees this included new speed zones for boats and different water pollution regulations put into place at all bays where manatees are known to be. These things caused the number of injured manatees to go down for a few years but since then the numbers have slowly climbed back up to where they were before. The rules and regulations put in place by both the state of Florida and the endangered species organization did the trick for a while but the follow through on most of them was gone away causing them to no longer be of any help to the manatee
Since earth was created, there has been a natural phenomenon of species across the globe appearing and disappearing. However, in the past century, many species of animals have been disappearing at an alarming rate. Mainly, this rapidly occurring issue is caused by humans. Humans that contribute to the harmful actions that cause side effects such a pollution, deforestation, habitat loss and poaching. The natural rate of extinction pales in comparison to the extinction rate caused by all of these. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the current rate of extinction is 11,000 times greater than the natural extinction rate. Several different efforts have been made in order to stop or slow down the extinction of earth’s species. The Endangered Species Act is possibly the most successful example of these efforts. It’s main purpose is to get a commitment from the American people that they will work hand in hand to help save species that are at risk of becoming extinct and never returning. This act was put in place in 1973 and since then, no other law about the disappearance of wildlife has been quite as accomplished. Many different species that are protected under this law are either fully recovered or on their way to becoming safer. Laws like these are helping many different creatures left and right, however, at the alarming rate that they are disappearing, something else needs to be done. What people don’t seem to realize is that we depend on many of the animals that we are
Manatees are heterotrophic, so they have to find other sources of food because they can't produce their own.
Alligators are large, lizard like, scaly creatures that closely resemble crocodiles. These beasts are native to only the United States and China, where it is now nearly extinct. Male Gators can grow up to 4 and a half meters long, the females up to 3 and half. However, Chinese alligators are much smaller, growing to be about half the size of a female American one. Gators vary in color, from yellow to green to nearly black in old age. An alligators tail is extremely muscular, used mostly in the water to propel the gator forward like a rocket.
The conservation of Udubia is a significant issue that needs to be dealt with promptly. There has been a decline in the marine wildlife surrounding the islands, which leads to a greater question; Why is this happening and what can we do to help? For one, fishing is a major concern. South of Tacominone, and to the east is where many tens and hundreds of tons of lobster and Rockfish accordingly, as well as hundreds of pounds Yelloweye Rockfish are being caught, and simultaneously a decline in the population of seals. There is a correspondence in the increased fishing yield numbers to the decreasing seal population. The dodo observed that 90% of manatees off the coast of Florida have scars on their backs due to the propellers of fishing boats.
The community of Pensacola, Florida has one inspiring tight group of people who care as much as they do for each other as much as they do for the outside world. The people of the Pensacola community all have big hearts, big personalities, a great deal of southern class, sass, and plenty of charitable souls. Considering the diminutive size of our town, we pretty much all know each other. Whether you’re out for a night on the town in our historic Downtown Pensacola or just getting your weekly groceries, there's a great likelihood that you'll see some familiar faces, always greeting you with a polite smile and wave.
Within the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service helps watch over and investigate the health of different species. Then, local and national scientist collects data to determine if a species gets put on the Endangered Species list. The main factor to determine the endangerment of a species is if a large percentage of the species’ habitat has been destroyed. Next, note if the animal’s population has been excessively decreasing, threatened by disease, or any terrorized by any predators. Also, record any man-made
There was a safe place formed in 1957 in an attempt to prevent the extinction of the area's deer that are home to the Florida Keys. Right now there are approximately 800 of these deer. Humans are trying help these deer by forming a “Key Deer Protection Allience”. The KDPA is a group of citizens that are deticated to protect these endangered species. Because Key deer have lost their fear of humans, there is a serious problem with people illegally feeding them. This makes the deer more vulnerable to dog attacks or getting entangled in fences. It also brings them closer to roads where they can be hit by cars. Feeding Key deer can also cause them to group in a small area, rather than spreading out over the available habitat. The KDPA believe

Many of its marshes, cypresses, and mangroves cover the majority of the wetland and an estimated number of 50 reptile species and 40 mammal species currently residing are either endangered, or worse, threatened for extinction. The Florida Panther, according to the National Park Service, has a successful breeding population; nonetheless, the “primary threats to the remaining population are habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation” (para. 2). Due to the ongoing urban development, the panther became a well-known endangered human threat. An estimated 80-120 panthers are surviving
dugongs is the “sea cow”. This name is most likely from the fact that manatees
Prior to 1949, panthers could be killed at any time of the year. In 1950, FWC declared the panther a regulated species. in 1958, they were removed from game list and given complete legal protection. On march 11th, 1967, the Panther was listed as endangered. The Florida Panther Act in 1978 made killing a panther a felony. Now endangered in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Today, the panther is restricted to less than 5% of its historic range. Population has increased from an estimated 12-20 in the early 1970s to an estimated 100-120 in 2007. Still threatened by increasing human population and development in their habitat. The panther has a recovery priority number of 6c.
This exceptionally charismatic megafauna has become synonymous with Florida along with “snowbirds”, orange juice, and Mickey Mouse but the Florida manatee may not be as permanent as its counterparts. Since being declared as endangered, the Florida manatee, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, has been at the center of conservation efforts throughout the east coast of the United States. While human involvement has been at the crux of the increasing population, it can be argued that the best way to save this species is by taking humans out of the picture altogether.
Harassment is any activity that decreases a manatee’s fitness, most commonly recognized by a change in behavior.1 Many previous studies have provided extensive evidence of harassment, and unanimously support a positive correlation between the number of people and increased manatee activity as well as the use of protected areas, making a sound argument for the need for increased regulation and prohibited activities in the springs.4, 5 However, there is a predominant research gap in providing compelling data that human interactions have a deleterious impact on the fitness of manatees.1
I plan to start my own organization called the manatee protecting crew (MPC) it will be a nonprofit organization. I will start hiring people who are more experience than me in certain fields. My crew with consist of Veterinaries, Naturalists and Scientists. We will start conducting plan like building sanctuaries for injured manatees and calves that have been separated from their mothers. If a calf is separated from its mother for too long it can die.
Sea turtles are becoming more and more endangered as time goes on and is something that really needs to be changed. There are seven species of sea turtle and they are all either endangered or critically endangered. Millions of sea turtles used to inhabit the sea now only a fraction of them are still around. Humans are partly the cause of this because we hunt them for food and profit. It is unbelievable that people can kill such beautiful creatures just for their personal benefit. Humans are not the only reason sea turtles are facing extinction, but we are the main reason. Humans really should not be part of the problem in the first place.
