Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but make a life by what we give." Volunteerism not only helps ones community, but additionally benefits teenagers in personally and professional way. High school students should be required to complete one hundred hours of community service before entering college in order to increase their global awareness and maturity.
Nearly 1/2 of earth's population lives in poverty. Researches at the Feeding America Organization of the United States state that "In 2014, there was 46.7 million people in poverty just in the United States." Most Americans find this hard to believe due to America's wasteful habits and the lack of knowledge on global awareness. Community service helps to shed some light on poverty beyond the classroom. It uses organizations like the Manna House to open young eyes to strive to make a differences and help with solutions to fight poverty in the United States. Some students would miss this opportunity if it were not required.

Before high school, community service never crossed my mind at any point during my life. Going to public school, I knew that nobody cared about service and since I didn’t have to, I never did anything for my town. Thirteen year-old me had only 3 things on my mind:
Is it a good idea to encourage teenagers to work in a volunteer capacity? Some people think it is beneficial for young people to do unpaid work in the community. There are several reasons why this is a favorable idea. One is that doing unpaid work will help them become more responsible and gain experience. Another is that working for charities or other organizations will help them contribute to society. One reason why encouraging teenagers to engage in unpaid work may not be a favorable proposition is that it does not give them an accurate picture of what it is like in the workforce. Encouraging teenagers to do unpaid work to help society will help them become better individuals and improve society as a whole.
Students who do not have many after school activities or school work still need to have time to socialize, relax, and do things to help them relieve the stress that accumulated at school that day. Forcing students to do community service will increase the levels of stress that students experience from day to day and will cause a greater lack of sleep than they currently have, which hinders them from learning the next day and also gets them behind in their work.
Volunteering helps high school students mature by showing them the hard work that others put into the community. No one can truly understand how much work is put into something until that person is the one doing the work. For example, picking up trash helps the community stay clean and keeps the animals safe from garbage. No matter how big or small the job may seem, it always helps somebody.
It's undoubtable that community service is a good thing, however when someone is forced into doing something, the power of the action is greatly diminished. For example, a child who wants to play a sport on their own free will is much more likely to excell than a child whose parent made them play. Community service can easily be viewed with the same logic, and because of this I don't think the United States should require mandatory community service.
Little Annie was finally in the last semester of her senior year. Going out of high school with a 3.9 GPA, a job at the local kayak business, 3 sports letter on her letterman jacket, and an endless horizon of great opportunities for herself. As the year came to a close Annie was thrilled to be getting out of high school and getting into her adult life and pursuing a career. Just as she had seemed to have everything figured out, last minute she was informed that she would not be able to graduate because of her lack of community service hours. Even though Annie had all the great grades and was an active part of her community, because she didn't have the hours of volunteerism she was unable to graduate high school and had to postpone her plans as well as not be able to do any more
Growing up in a small town, I see the importance of giving back to your community. When most people think of giving back to their community they think of money. Your time is sometimes more valuable in a small community than money. I think teens should be required to perform sixty hours of community service before they are eighteen years old. I have grown up watching my mother donate a lot of time to organizations within our small community and she has required me to be a part of some of those efforts. Volunteering my time has taught me the importance of giving back.
Many high schools across America have inserted community service hours as a graduation requirement. This adjustment teaches leadership, positive work ethics, and community involvement habits. It truly is a good appendage to the many requirements of graduation. This adjustment creates gateways for various categories of services towards the community. From volunteering at the humane society, picking up trash or even helping a family move to a new home. There are countless jobs that are considered community service, and deciding what to volunteer time towards would be a debate. If community service hours were a requirement to graduate at my school, I would donate my time to these three services.

Community service does not require you to cure cancer, or creating a huge organization that funds diabetes research, but can instead be little things. While I know in the great aspect of the world and life I did not to a humongous deed of goodwill, but it made me feel completed and good about myself helping out the little girls and making a bowl, which I why more people should help out around the community. Applying mandatory community service in high school would teach students to be conscious of the world and people around them, which would invoke the students to build a passion for helping. If a change was made towards this advancement, the world would be rid of hate and destruction, and instead replaced with teamwork and development. Therefore, South Western High School should implement mandatory community service for graduation because it promotes personal growth, strengthens student futures, and increases cognitive skills among learners.
To serve or not to serve, that is the question? Should mandatory community service be part of graduation requirements? I have personally talked with a few high school seniors and asked them the question, should community service be mandatory for graduation requirements? The answers I got were yes. One student reported that if it was not for the mandatory community service requirements she would have never volunteered her time in a nursing home with Alzheimer’s patients. Now she knows she wants to go to college and study the Brain. Another said that she has enjoyed working with kids in an afterschool program that she now wants to go to school and become a teacher. Others have said that they feel rewarded and feel a sense of accomplishment. They love the way they feel when they have helped someone else. According to Corporation for National and Community Service, in 2009, President Barack Obama encouraged volunteerism through the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act with a $1.49 billion budget. This act provided gave financial assistance in starting and supporting community service requirements in schools.
Most students just don’t feel the need to volunteer in the community. Some feel they need more study time, and others just want more recreational time. They don’t realize the benefits of working for their local community. Since Eggers experienced this first hand, he knows that a college or university needs to require its students to have a certain number of community service hours before graduating in order to have the students gain the benefits from service-learning. A university cannot simply expect its student to seek out the work themselves; the students need some form of motivation.
