Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but make a life by what we give." Volunteerism not only helps ones community, but additionally benefits teenagers in personally and professional way. High school students should be required to complete one hundred hours of community service before entering college in order to increase their global awareness and maturity.

Nearly 1/2 of earth's population lives in poverty. Researches at the Feeding America Organization of the United States state that "In 2014, there was 46.7 million people in poverty just in the United States." Most Americans find this hard to believe due to America's wasteful habits and the lack of knowledge on global awareness. Community service helps to shed some light on poverty beyond the classroom. It uses organizations like the Manna House to open young eyes to strive to make a differences and help with solutions to fight poverty in the United States. Some students would miss this opportunity if it were not required.

According to the New York Times, "Miss Fried added that she believes community service should be mandated at all high schools because 'most kids don't even consider doing community service on their own'.'' Simply by completing a minimum of one hundred community service hours, U.S. students can improve maturity, global awareness, help the community, and build skills. The world would be a better place if schools required students to complete community service hours.
