Required national service has been hotly debated for years. Whether or not the United States should enforce a mandatory national service law still remains uncertain. On paper, national service looks like a good idea. However, national service should not be required in the United States because an abundance of people are already serving and it is inconvenient to many within the suggested age-range.
There is an abundance of citizens already serving in the United States in positions such as the military, the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, as teachers, firefighters, or in an array of other public-service positions. To top this, demand for national service is high, with significantly more applications submitted for AmeriCorps positions than opportunities.
Should national service be mandatory for all Americans? No, Americans should not be required to perform any service they did not choose to do. In my opinion, all service should be optional and no one should be forced to do things they aren't comfortable with doing. I feel that if the government were to empose a mandatory national service on the American people, many would be upset with thier decision and rebel against it, ending in only conflict. It is said that "The United States was founded on our right to pursue happiness." If things were to become mandatory with no free will by the people, would there be any happiness to pursue at the end. I agree with the statement in passage 2 'The Heart of Service' "Large-scale mandatory service is
Many countries require young people to serve two years of military service, and as we continue to have military conflicts across the world, some people have proposed that the united states adopt a similar type of policy of mandatory conscription. I believe that a two-year period of national service should be obligatory for all 18 year olds. It’ll help strengthen the character of youth, and will help increase the collective conscience of a nation and the restraint of leaders when considering military action. As we have 18 year olds go into the military, they should get the option in whatever kind of public service that suits his or her interest. Different genders across the world are frequently given different responsibilities. For example,
In early July, 2014 I had just graduated high school. I decided I wanted to do something spontaneous and to help people. That late may I had gone to a career fair where I obtained an informational packet for AmeriCorps. I didn’t give the packet much thought other than a passing interest. When I graduated I remembered the packet and decided why not. The most important day of my life was the day I officially joined AmeriCorps.
Paired with all the controversy over current immigration laws, renowned political scientist, Robert Putnam, released a study showing, “...the more diverse a community is, the less people care about and engage with that community. Diversity, in fact, seems to breed distrust and disengagement (Stengel).” Americans are so divided among racial, partisan, and economic bounds that the integrating forces of public service seem necessary. Perhaps instead of perceiving themselves as self-serving individuals, assuming a role in a mission much larger than themselves would humble and enlighten them (Daily Pennsylvania cite this correctly). National Service should become a country-wide rite of passage for young people. They should give contribute to the community as they transition to adulthood and become a functioning entity within it. The service should promote patriotism and an interest in the service as an enlightened nation (Stengel). Everyone should do something for their country, everyone should be proud to be an American. The freedoms and liberties that are hand-in-hand with living in America the beautiful are taken for granted and their roots forgotten. Magnificent sacrifices have been made for this country. Is it too much to ask for a
Perspective is everything. You need to think about one thing in different perspectives. Imagine walking into a neighborhood with people that are in situations, such as, being hungry or in poverty and you are wealthy so you do nothing. However, if you were living in their shoes, you would be begging for a meal or even a roof over your head. This is the reason why there needs to be more volunteers for community service to help others that do need the help, even if they don’t ask for it. In this article, “Should the United States Establish Mandatory Public Service for Young Adults?” by Kent Ansen (2013), the proposition that the author made is an interesting one and one that I believe in but I think that it should be suggested rather than mandatory.
Some may find that mandatory national service is taking away from those who love and aspire to volunteer. Although this may be the case for some, mandatory national service could also be a good thing. For example, people that are unemployed could use this as a source of a job or even just something to fill their time. What of the working Americans? Is it right for all citizens to be required the same amout of service? All citizens would have to be treated equally whatever the out come is to be.
Mandatory Public service is a topic that has been debated for years. Joanne Levy-Prewitt, an independent college admission counselor, is in favor of making Public Services a requirement for graduated students. The relationship between service and education is significant and benefit from each other.
In 1840 the biggest group of immigrants that came to texas was germany. They constituted more than 5 percent of the total Texas population. Germans have different ways they dress, different religion/ heritage, and came to texas for different and harsh reasons.
In different countries all over the world, it is mandatory for every young person to serve at least two years of service in the military. Many people believe we should have the same policy in the United States. People should have their own choice to serve in the military or not because mandatory military service is unfair and does not give each young person the right to express themselves in their daily life.
The topic of mandatory national service has been around for years now, and there will always be arguments on whether it should be enforced or not. Some may say that it takes away our freedom, but is it not what gives us freedom in the first place? The United States’ military, national service, as well as community service is based on volunteers. That is what makes this country great, but there are less volunteers as years go by. Crime increases, streets are not safe anymore, Americans are oblivious to what is happening around the world. There are so many opportunities to give back to the country, yet, not many care. Today’s generation is based on social trends, and self-gratification. There is also the fact that many young people do not know what to do with their life after high school, some continue to college or focus on work, others do not work nor study. Therefore, all young men and women should be required to give two years to national service because it can help solve problems as well as build the community back together.
America is the country built on freedom, you should get a choice if you want to volunteer, not to be forced. It would take away the purpose of its value. People volunteer to do community service to help others in need, or to help themselves. As stated in the second essay, "Mandatory service would turn generosity into obligation and goes against constitutional rights." It would take all the meaning away from it. Community service wasnt meant for people to get paid, for doing it. That's
In today's world, you see and hear about so much negativity; with terroist attacks, hate crimes, bullying etc., you wonder can we ever be united and live in peace? As I reflect on the passage, of two very different views, I weigh the pros and cons. Should the United States mandate such a law? I feel that community service should be a choice, as that is part of our freedom of being an American. But, as I mentioned prior, I feel more and more we are seeing a divided nation. I think to myself maybe required community service wouldnt be such a bad idea.
In todays society the war in the Middle East can be considered a controversial topic. The men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan put their lives on the line every day to help keep our country free. No one has forced them to serve in the United States Armed Forces they have made their own conscience decision to serve. However these men and women only make up a small percentage of the United States population. Should all men and women be required to serve in the U.S. armed forces when they graduate from high school or should the United States require mandatory military service?
Making military service mandatory sound like it would be a good idea. This can give discipline, makes stronger citizens, but the reality is doing this takes away freedom and goes against the very foundations of what America is supposed to be. Mandatory military service should not be required for American citizens.
Introduction: In the past years, many people have suffered from the lack of homes, money, education, and a proper living environment. More than 2.8 billion people struggle to live on less than 2 dollars a day. National service helps a few the millions of people dying every minute because of poverty. Making national service mandatory will save more and more unfortunate people. It is for the sake of billions of people's lives that I feel confirmed to affirm today's resolution.
