The voting rate in America has been very low the past few elections. There are many reasons people feel that people aren’t going to the polls to vote. For example so people believe that its because the people running for positions of power aren’t the the best so nobody votes. Other people believe that its or right as Americans to go to the polls on election day. Forcing People to go vote on election day is not democratic because we are given the freedom to do what we want.
The reason voting should be optional is because in democratic countries that have made voting mandatory it hasn’t worked out well. It is mandatory to vote in Austria and Belgium. In those countries it is mandatory to vote and if you don’t vote you there are consuconsis. That means you don’t have to vote if you don’t want to. “People feel that if you have the right to vote you have the right to not vote. In fact, some people might even interpret mandatory voting as a violation of [the] First Amendment’s prohibition of compelled speech.” If mandatory voting became apart of our Government system it would also be breaking rules as well. There for making voting mandatory in our government is completely going against everything or country was founded upon.

The major reason why people don’t is because they feel like the people running for positions of power aren’t the best people to be the leader of our country. People feel that they shouldn’t waste there vote so they don’t vote. ‘In the 2008 US Presidential election, people sensed a new political star in Obama, someone who would make a difference, and voter turnout was the highest for forty year”.
