Jack’s Manipulation on the Weak in Order to Change Fear to Power for Himself Fear can take control of humans and manipulate them for evil. In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, fear is shown to change the boys into savages from their fears on the island. This fear starts with the younger children and their fears of the dark and unknown. The fear changes throughout the novel and manipulates the boys which Jack uses fear to gain power over the innocent boys. The fear begins internally with a few younger boys who are simply scared of the unknown and dark throughout the novel, and this simple childish fear was like a seed planted within them that slowly grew. The fear first grew into a beast that scared them at night. Golding first introduces the fear through the boy with the mulberry-colored birthmark who asks Piggy “What you’re going to do about the snake-thing”(35). All the boys soon become fearful of this unknown and unseen beast. This fear starts to take control of the boys, from this Jack arises and claims he would kill the beast if it was real. The fear in the children transforms into a new protected trust in Jack. Jack is filled with an internal evil that strives for power and dominance through the fear and trust of the weaker children. The littluns are swearing their trust to Jack in return for protection. Maurice even confesses that Jack says, “I mean when Jack says you can

The boys in the book, The Lord of the Flies, are controlled by their fear of the beast. This fear is not of the beast itself, but of the unknown. It comes from not knowing whether or not a beast exists.
In Lord of the Flies by Golding, fear is a prevalent theme that recurs a number of times. Fear is most recurring with the character Jack and the way he uses fear to manipulate the group into staying together and doing things they wouldn't normally do.
“The thing is - fear can’t hurt you anymore than a dream.” (Golding, 116). Jack’s completely false point of view of the hazardous emotion is declared within the quote. Jack is one of the antagonists derived from William Golding’s esteemed bestseller, Lord of the Flies. In the renowned novel written by Golding, young boys in a plane have crashed and descended upon an uninhabited island with more than sufficient vegetation. At first, order and tranquility were established by the children and there was more civilization on the island compared to savagery. However, as the novel advanced, the readers could identify the kids were suffering from the persistent terror on the island because of isolation. Gradually disorder possessed most of the boys’ minds and therefore had inaugurated
“...fear can't hurt you any more than a dream.” Quote William Golding in Lord of Flies. William Golding argues that the fear of the unknown gives a high disadvantage to certain boys who are easily frightened. Golding’s opinion of fear is expressed in Lord of the Flies, relating to the nightmares he had as a child and his fear of abuse from his parents. In our society, the less courageous people have more life struggles and do not have as many experiences. I believe this novel proves that fear holds us back, but in reality, it will not hurt us.
In 1971, a psychologist Philip Zimbardo conducted an experiment to see the impact of fear. What did fear do to man? He was able to simulate an experiment with prisoners and guards and found out at the end of his experiment that the prisoner had severe stress and anxiety. The experiment demonstrated “the powerful role that the situation can play in human behavior”. This experiment showed what a particular situation can influence human behavior. In the book, The Lord of the Flies, the characters are on a stranded island where the environment is governing their human behavior and how they react to one another. The character are influenced by fear and behave in ways that they normally would not act in their everyday lives. Man is controlled by fear and it can cause him to do things that he would never imagine doing. Fear results in letting go of your natural instincts and goes to your survival instincts, and makes you become an animal.
There are many emotions that do many different things but one of the most destructive of them all is fear. fear is everywhere is the world around us it is a part of everyday lives and it is around every corner waiting. There's only one thing worse than fear itself and that's fear of the unknown. In the novel The Lord Of The Flies fear is brought to a new level of destructiveness when it comes to people's emotions. In the novel fear is a destructive emotion is many ways.
A distressing emotion aroused by impending evil and pain, whether the threat is real or imagined is described as fear. Fear is what William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies encompasses. By taking three major examples from the novel, fear will be considered on different levels: Simon’s having no instance of fear, Ralph’s fear of isolation on the island, and Jack’s fear of being powerless. Fear can make people behave in ways that are foreign to them, whether their fear is real or imagined. In response to fear, people may act defensively by attacking, fear can either stop one from doing something, or it can make one behave in an irrational erratic manner.
Power, in the case of Lord Of the Flies it’s a position of ascendancy over others: AUTHORITY. Fear is an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by expectation or awareness of danger.
As Jack matures he becomes more powerful and decides to take over. All the fear that has built up inside him has began to make him stronger and much more powerful. The power ends up getting to his head, “the forest near them burst into uproar. Demoniac figures with faces of white and red and green rushed out howling, so that the littluns fled screaming” this is where Jack decides to take over and attack Piggy and some of the littluns. When people have fear, adrenaline kicks in, fight or flight occurs, and in Jack’s case it was
Seeing a point of entry to someone's mind can cause that person to be used or manipulated in such a way that they don't realise it. We see different ways in books and stories how one character uses another to get something out of them. The one being used may not realise it until it's too late, or worst of all they never see themselves being used. The characters Jack , Claudius, Polonius and Toby Belch all used a way to manipulate another character.
The Power of Manipulation When individuals find themselves in unforeseen circumstances, outside forces prevail. For example, when there are kids gathering around to bully a person and an individual just stands there, they are letting the outside forces take control. Situations and environments are able to control and manipulate an individual. Situations can become so intense that they affect individuals negatively. In the book, Lord of the Flies Golding states, “Jack made a rush and stabbed at Ralph’s chest with his spear” (Golding 177).
Fear, an emotion that everyone has experienced. That is what a group of British schoolboys endured after being evacuated during an unnamed time of war. Their plane collapsed on an uninhabited island and now they were alone, without adult supervision. They are delighted at first but as time goes on the boys start believing that there is a beast on the island. Soon the boys fear almost everything they see and hear on the island, assuming them to be the beast. As the novel progresses, their fear of the unknown beast becomes exceedingly powerful. Terror paralyzes their minds, leaving them too weak to face the truth about their fears. What is the the source of fear? In William Golding’s “Lord Of The Flies”, Golding demonstrates that humanity’s evil is caused by fear through the character Simon, Jack and Piggy.
Fear changes the way people act. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a plane crash in World War Two leaves about fifty boys ages six to twelve, stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean with no one adult to help them. The boys are forced to start a civilization and elect a leader. Because they are just young boys, everything on the island seems to scare them. Even trees rustling or a strange shadow seems to get them on edge. Because they are constantly scared it causes them to do things that they normally wouldn't do. Fear changes the way the boys think, act, and perceive their surroundings.
For one to change who they are; they must not only transform themselves physically but also change their state of mind and how they function as a part of society. Transformation is a vital part of our lives whether we realize it or not, and the constant strive for change is what keeps humanity evolving. In Lord of the Flies, “The Boat” and Fifth Business written by William Golding, Alistair MacLeod and Robertson Davies transformation is present physically, mentally and socially.
