Humans’ brain doesn’t stop developing until they reach the age of 25 years. Therefore, there are many implications that can affect the brain cell while in the process of growing, including the use of drugs. Today’s adolescents are taking marijuana as a way to experience the greatness of “chill life.” However, they are not aware of how much it is impacting their lives. The number of adolescents among the United States consuming marijuana is large, but the current percentage of young adults using the drug in our community is way more impacting; According to the Office of Adolescent Health, 43% of High School students in the District of columbia have used marijuana once or more. As NIDA illustrates, they first “pass from the lungs into the bloodstream, which rapidly carries them throughout the body and to the brain” (1). Because THC is very similar to a cannabinoid chemical called anandamide, which already exist in the human body, it “is able to attach to molecules called cannabinoid receptors on neurons in these brain areas and activate them” (NIDA). This similarity causes THC to have control over the brain of individual and in this way affecting one’s ability to coordinate, concentrate, think, etc. As THC gets into the brain, it also alters the hippocampus, an area in the brain related to learning and memory.
