For example, ocean acidification is already a problem. The decrease in pH of our ocean acidity is causing coral reefs to die out—which houses thousands of organisms’ homes and food sources. Due to the contaminants, we release into the natural environment, we are slowly losing ecosystems every day. Therefore, I want to be the researcher to help save the oceanic life from these horrible conditions. For many people, the environment they grew up in is a main factor in what helps them decide their major. Although Dallas is a good city, it is not the best place for a person who is interested in marine biology. My love and passion for the ocean started with my family vacations to the ocean every year. Something about the sound of the waves and the knowledge that the edges of the sea does not end for miles captures my attention. The mysterious beauty of the ocean is not the only factor of why I strive to major in marine biology. Ever since I was little I have had a nurturing character as helping people and the Earth has always given me an extra sense of purpose. Humans have other beings to help when they are in need, but animals only have their own kind. The ocean is so vast it causes a problem for rules and regulations to protect the marine life. Knowing that marine animals need someone in their corner gives me the fire to do anything to become a marine biologist. My dream is to work at a marine park to teach others how they can do their parts to help the animals and bring hope to the animals themselves as I rehabilitate and keep them healthy.

I want to work with Dr. Steve Moore for his interest in studying marine biology using innovative ocean technologies. Working with Dr. Moore will allow me to further my knowledge in marine biology by using field methods that I am interested in, but have not had the chance to work with. I want to learn more about using ROV’s and other technology to monitor underwater environments. Studying in the Ecosystems Electronics Lab will give me a unique chance to research the twilight zone and other marine environments through field methods not available at my college. In working with Dr. Moore, I hope to enhance my understanding of marine biology by applying new ocean technologies to my research.

We need to devote more energy into research, monitoring and enforcement of laws in order to increase scientific knowledge, monitor exploitation, protect and prevent degradation and damage to species and their habitats.

According to FMAP (Future of Marine Animal Populations), a project of the International census of Marine Life (2000 - 2010) aimed at describing the distribution and diversity of marine life, it is predicted that out of 8.7 million species that live on earth, 2.1 million live on Earth [1]. It is estimated that over 1 million undiscovered species are living in and around the reefs. Coral reefs hold more number of species per unit area than any other water bodies. Coral reefs hold the highest biodiversity, because the corals provide food and also protect from predators besides providing the shelter for a variety of organisms. [2, 4].
