Marine Science Undergraduate And Graduate Programs

When thinking about getting away to some serene paradise to help forget about work or school obligations most people instantly think of the beach. Whether it be the west or east coast the beach is a universal symbol of peace and serenity, plus a little bit of fun. But this bliss has a whole different meaning to me. This is where I grew up and how I found myself. The west coast of Florida is the first time I felt the sand in my toes and the salt water on my face. These memories inspired me to give back to the ocean and its inhabitants and follow my dreams of becoming a marine biologist.

I’ve always had a keen interest in science. When I was younger, I viewed a dolphin show online. I was instantly fanisnated and later I was informed that the trainers were special marine biologists. The idea of becoming a marine biologist is still a dominate career choice for me. Last year, I was incredibly curious with the aspects that a marine biologist has to undertake that I researched the career path as part of my PLP. This only ignited my interest even further and when I was invited to attend the Flinders University I particularly focused on the marine biology and biology lectures.

Legally, one can argue that the state has jurisdiction, but the Department of Education has a great influence over the decision to adhere to its’ demands. Malia Rivera and Carlie Wiener, together they have developed an array of programs to inspire local community members to explore marine sciences and promote stewardship awareness. Including research and management, there is vast amount of education and outreach programs to communicate the science. Examples of these programs are, Ecosystem Penpals, which is a program that brings together two communities of students adjacent to National Marine Sanctuaries. Coconut Island Field Trips & Navigating Change Curriculum Site, is a program that allows tours directed by docents of the Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), sharing with local citizens the research that has been going on close to their own home. Thus, allowing students to sneak peak into marine science careers. Ocean FEST (Families Exploring Science Together) is funded to develop interest in the marine science careers amongst local students. This program allows parents and students to educate themselves on ongoing research programs. Some concepts that are touched upon in these workshops are climate change, ocean acidification, microbial communities, and ocean properties. Other programs among are Windward Community College Continuing Education Course: Moku o Lo’e. Initiated in 2009, HIMB-NOAA Fellowship Program, which is a paid one year program for undergraduate and graduate students in NOAA offices to get experiences and skills that are career related. However just like many schools South lacks in awareness of cec classes and also career and college readiness. There is not enough focus on how there are different options other than college. I believe that colleges have enough money to help fund schools and we play the roll as the consumers paying extremely high tution rates. As a student at south for 3 years I have never been given the opportunity or even heard about CEC classes until this semester. This is an example of how awareness is not being shown at South. As a senior this year I know many of the graduates of last year and most of them are struggling or deal with financial troubles. If these students were more prepaired or even shown different opportunities could of been different.

My ambition is to graduate St. Francis College as a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor’s degree in the upcoming years. Although majoring in nursing will not be easy, I feel I am prepared for the challenge. At this time in my life I cannot see myself majoring in anything else. As a young girl, with a mother working in the medical field, I was always fascinated going to work with her. Working in a doctor’s office these past two and a half years myself has given me much experience with patients and has made it more to clear to me that this is what I want to pursue as a career. I wish to be a nurse because I seem to get a feeling of warmth and internal satisfaction when helping those in need. I have begun to learn that medicine is not the only cure for people’s ailments. It is the care they receive by those around them whether it is in a hospital, nursing home, or even their own home. The pull factors of HPU’s Marince science Scholars Program is the fact that there is one at a university. I am heavily invested and marine sciences and not alot of colleges offer a program dedicated to the major, as well at the universitys location. Its in a goldmine of opportunities to conduct so many field studies or places to explore. Its a prime location. Im very interested in delving deeper and surrounding myself with people who are interested in the same subject and its very do-able in this specific program. As I looked at the different categories on the Idealist website the about graduate school it listed some good points about graduate school and what I should expect as a graduate student and what the graduate school expects of me. The categories that were discussed were going to school part time, lifestyle changes and preparing for graduate school.
