Love him or hate him, Mark Cuban has become a polarizing figure. He has made his “Mark” on the tech word, business world, and sports world. Mark Cuban’s story is a modern day from rags to riches tale and according to him, the story has just begun.
This paper will take you on a journey of Mark Cuban’s life beginning with his upbringing. We will also cover his early life in the tech world as well as his first company’s growth and the eventual sale of his first company. Cuban became an expert in the computer and networking fields. His company became so profitable that in 1990 Cuban sold his company to CompuServe for $6 million. With this new fortune, and the development of the Internet, Cuban decided to take on a business partner, Indiana alum Todd Wagner In 1995 together they started AudioNet, a company that allowed you to stream live events over the internet. In 1998 after renaming the company Broadcast.com and going public, its stocks were selling at $200 a stock. One year later Mark Cuban and business partner Todd Wagner sold their company Broadcast.com for $6 billion to Yahoo. Mark Cuban well known for his bold, unambiguous views and mind set, having much to do with his immensely successful genius. Cuban has created, produced, bought, and sold numerous companies to include the entertainment and film industries. Cuban is known for his radical views on patent policies and had gone on record several times auguring his stance that patents are not necessary. Cuban believes that patents should be eradicated if they are have not been used in 5 to 7 years. In 2012 Cuban donated $250.000 dollars to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). EFF is an organization that believes it is “defending civil liberties in the digital world. Founded in 1990, EFF champions user privacy, free expression, and innovation through impact litigation, policy analysis, grassroots activism, and technology development. Working to ensure that rights and freedoms are enhanced and protected as our use of technology grows.” (Quinn, 2015) Cuban views patents is a waste of time and money. He often refers to innovators and small businesses who spend their life saving or went into debt funding patents that wasn’t proven to make money. He wants the small business owner to have a fighting chance in this economy without big business bulling them through the use of loopholes in our legal policies known as patents. Cuban stated “The first step is to get rid of software patents or at worst change to 5 years. Let smart people compete rather than litigate. In this day and age of advancing technologies small companies can out-perform the big everywhere outside the court room.
