Depression at Its Worst Depression has been around probably as long as humans have walked this earth, and everybody experiences it. However, even those who study depression have only grasped a small part of why and how depression is caused. Not only do doctors not know what it is, they also do not know how to help the over five thousand teens who turn to suicide every year. Mark Solms states that the first depressive episode is most like caused by some sort of loss (Solms 209). There are many ways that a teenager can develop depression. When someone loses a person that is close or dear to them it is natural to feel pain or sadness, the only problem is when they let that pain and sadness take over their life, and that is when depression starts to come into play. The reason why much of the time depression is caused loss is that when someone dies, the living person can ask many questions many of which include, why did they die and I live, it should have been me, life will never be the same without them. Many of these questions can be reasonable, but when that person continues to dwell on them over and over without thinking of anything else, it starts to cause feelings of worthlessness and low self-esteem. Everyone should find a way to help prevent suicides and depression. Anybody should realize that depression and contemplative suicides have clear symptoms that tell that the teen is struggling with them. Ways that everyone can prevent suicides and depression is also very important. Understanding how depression is caused through bullying, social stress, and home can also be a vital skill to know about. Lastly, anyone would be better off understanding what depression’s effect is on the brain, to help them understand the dangers of depression. Major Depressive Disorder has claimed the lives of up to 15% of those suffering from the disorder through suicide (Belmaker & Agam, 2008). Different people are effected by depression in different ways. Some individuals, like Raquel, suffer from loss of interest, feelings of worthlessness, along with thoughts of suicide (Fave & Kendler, 2000). Others go on with their daily routine with a smile on their face, while hiding their emotions. Every year there are thousands of teens dying, not from cancer, getting shot, or car accident, but by their own hands. Teens make the choice of committing suicide. Depression a word we’re familiar with especially when it comes to adults, we know adults get depress and we understand the reasons, with the high demands in life it’s not uncommon to get lost in the shuffle. Depression in adult is something we have known for many years, but what has surprised many of us is that adolescents also get depressed. I myself still don’t fully understand the reasons why or how this happens. I see it very often adolescent coming in to the ER because they are depressed and want to hurt themselves, and each and every single time I’m shock. What could be so bad in their lives that would make them think they have no way out? The main cause of depression is stress. Some teens stress over trying to achieve academic success, while others might stress about their family and home life. Bullying can also be a major cause of depression. Being bullied or teased will cause their self-esteem to lower and inflict a feeling of being inferior to others. Other causes or depression could be problems in their personal life such as break ups or fights with friends. The maximum amount of mental, physical, and emotional distress one can experiences to become depressed can vary from person to person.
