"Mother, you have no right to question Mary Alice," Chris scolded. "Mrs. Henshaw, no matter what you may have read, Chris and I are dating, nothing more," Mary Alice said. Are you close to your parents?" she asked. "Mother, you're embarrassing me," Chris said, his voice censorious. "My mother and I are estranged, have been for years. My father died when I was young," Mary Alice said. "I can't imagine what would cause a mother to sever her relationship with her only child," Mrs. Henshaw remarked. "What Chris was like as a boy?
