Mary Surratt guilty!! Mary Surratt should've been executed. Mary Surratt should’ve been executed because she lied to authorities. She lied to authorities by saying she was innocent. When she was questioned if she knew of Booths plan she replied never in the world if it was the last word I have ever to utter. So if she said that she is lying to authorities by saying that she didn't know about the plan even though she did. In the passage it says throughout the trial, Mary steadfastly maintaining her innocence. This means that she was acting innocent even though she wasn't. And I got both of of these from the article Mary Surratt to the gallows. She knew the plan of conspiracy by knowing the plan to the kidnapping. Surratt, the owner
Mary Surratt lied about knowing people . The reason I say this is because in source two it states ,” Before God sir , I do not know this man nor did I hire him to dig a ditch.” This shows that she lied about knowing people and hiring them. Hence proves that she had something to hide. Another reason that she should have been executed was in source two , it states ,”Mary Surratt lied about knowing Lewis Paine” . This shows and tells you that she lied to the federal government and police which means something is out of the normal.
However, there is evidence that she isn’t guilty of being a co-conspirator in the assassination plan. This evidence can be found in the movie The Conspirator, and in the book Chasing Lincoln’s Killer, by James L. Swanson. Mary Surratt may have been a
Mary Surratt was the defendant among the executed that received a punishment far out weighing her role in the crime. Mary Surratt was convicted of conspiracy in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. She was sentenced to death and became the first woman to be executed by the U.S. government. Mary Surratt was the mother of John Surratt who was a conspirator that helped John Wilkes Booth plan Lincoln’s kidnap and later, his assassination. With the help of Chasing Lincoln’s Killer, “Lincoln and the Writ of Liberty,” and the movie The Conspirator, it can be proven that Mary Surratt’s punishment was unjust. Mary Surratt received a punishment far worse than what she deserved because she was innocent, blamed for her son’s actions, and she did
It states, “I was hanged for living alone/ for having blue eyes and a sunburned skin,/ tattered skirts, few buttons,/ a weedy farm in my own name,/ and a surefire cure for warts” (lines 10-14). This passage demonstrates that the accused, typically, were considered abnormal by society. Mary lived alone, had tattered skirts, few buttons, and a weedy farm. These were things that may Puritan households did not have. Furthermore, her treatment for warts may have been considered magic or witchcraft by Puritans. So, these characteristics of Mary may be considered odd to society. She was made a target for witchcraft allegations, because she was considered
When Mary Warren is in court she also tries to blame someone. On page 195 Mary Warren says to John Proctor “Mr. Proctor, in open court she near to choked us all to death.” Even though Mary Warren knows this is a lie, she says it so she doesn’t get blamed anymore. But this isn’t the end of the girl’s similarities.
There are lots of reasons why Mary Surratt is guilty but, there are also reasons why she is not guilty. One of the reasons why she is guilty is her reaction. Mary’s reaction was suspicious when the police came and told her that Abraham has got assassinated she wasn’t crying or anything she acted like she already knew about it.Then the
Mary Surratt, a women who assisted in killing Abraham Lincoln , is guilty of conspiracy because she knew what the plans where to assassinate the 16th president of the United States. She gave John Wilkes Booth, the killer of the president, and their follow colleagues a places to sleep and live, the boarding place she provided is also the place they came up with the plans to murder the president. One of the people who were around during this was John M. Lloyd, he was an assistant to Mrs.Surratt . As he describes Mrs. Surratt in his testimony, he had do several things that had to be done to make sure that their plan carried thru, Like getting an buggy to pick up Booth to go to the theater. Also Mrs.Surratt and Booth often held private meetings
Mary Surratt was guilty and deserved to be put in prison for helping assassinate the president. Mary Surratt lied when it came to talking about the kidnap/assassination plot to kidnap/assassinat Abraham Lincoln and frequently talked to John Wilkes Booth.
Mary Surratt had John Wilkes Booth stay at her boarding house before the assassination of Lincoln. She said that she only knew about the kidnapping of president, but prosecutors believed that Surratt was lying because she wanted
Mary Surratt was a part of Abraham Lincoln’s kidnapping plot. In Source one it states “Mary knew about the kidnaping part but not the plan to kill the Abraham Lincoln. Mary Surratt was guilty for trying to kidnap Abraham Lincoln. Source2 “Booth had originally wanted to kidnap the president.” Booth only wanted to kidnap Abraham Lincoln to give a little scare, but after a while he got the idea in his mind that he wanted to kill Abraham Lincoln. In Source 2 it states “But our cause being almost lost, something decisive
Despite the fact that Mrs. Surratt may not have known the contents of the message she delivered, or the intentions of the items she had Mr. Lloyd hide, or the assassination plan, but the fact that she had contact with John Wilkes Booth and gave word to Mr. Lloyd that the items would be picked up on April 14th- the night of the assassination- directly implicated her in the plot. Mrs. Surratt’s demeanor when she spoke about the items is also suspect. Mr. Lloyd’s description that she “came out plainer” describes her attempt at first to be subtle in conversation about the items, but due to his lack of understanding, she had to be more blunt. Despite Mrs. Surratt’s attempt to be secretive about the items she had her tenant conceal, nothing in her statements implies that she knew anything specific or anything at all about the assassination. At this point, it is likely that Mrs. Surratt knew or understood her son’s role in the Confederacy, and after the ruin of her family’s finances due to the Civil War, she herself probably held sympathy for the
The fact Mary was a fellow monarch to Queen Elizabeth and not her subject meant Mary’s trial should have been handled in a different manner than a regular trial.

Helen Levitt was an incredibly influential street photographer starting in the late 1930’s and was active all the way until the 1990’s. She enjoyed much early success in her photography career photographing day-to-day happenings in the world around her, this set the stage for a long and very important career. Her photography can be described as objective because through her work she represented New York in a non bias way, photographing day to day happenings in her local life in Brooklyn, New York and the surrounding city such as children playing in the streets (Broken mirror), and adults going about their usual business gossiping, and simply their city life (Checkered Car). However, some may argue the point the Helen may have done an outstanding job at creating the illusion of objective work by photographing specific happenings around her world, and creating the illusion of a status quo. As seen in the photo Girl/Green Car all was not positive, uplifting, and graceful as many of her photos represent, the girl is seen
