Naive Beginnings Meet Cruel Endings
Edgar Allen Poe is considered one of America’s most profound and introverted writers. He’s written many poems and short stories, all in which hold dark themes and grim imagery. “The Masque of the Red Death,” is considered one of Poe’s most symbolic works. His use of symbolism is strongly represented in the seven rooms he has written inside the mansion of the character Prince Prospero and of the figure known as Red Death. These representations lead to the theme ‘progression of life.’ Poe’s use of the literary element ‘symbolism’ can be seen within the different colors of each of the seven rooms. Realistically, this figure is made to symbolize the disease that is spreading within the time period of the setting. Poe writes, “And thus too, it happened, perhaps, that before the last echoes of the last chime had utterly sunk into silence, there were many individuals in the crowd who had found leisure to become aware of the presence of a masked figure which had arrested the attention of no single individual before.” The beginning stages of this disease go “unknown,” much like the theme of the first room decorated in blue. No one takes notice of the masked figure as it casually moves from room to room. In accordance to this, Poe adds, “And the rumor of this new presence having spread itself whisperingly around, there arose at length from the whole company a buzz, or murmur, expressive of disapprobation and surprise — then, finally, of terror, of horror, and of disgust.” To further evaluate, this implies that once the disease is recognized by the masses, its’ true colors are already discovered; fear overtakes the population as they can already accurately assume just how capable Red Death is of invoking its’ destructive wrath. The figure is much like the progression of life from its’ young stages of naivety to the later stages replete with cruel realization of worldly complications.
Within the pages of the short story “The Masque of the Red Death,” Poe’s use of symbolism is strongly represented by the two prime examples listed. Edgar Allen Poe’s chilling short story Mask of the Red Death begins with people dropping like flies, as the king of the land decides to take his close friends with him to live in one of his palaces. leaving his subjects to survive on their own. A puzzling creature known as the Red Death has been terrorizing and killing off people one by one, and no one has a way to stop it. Through characterization of both Prospero and the Red Death, Poe foreshadows Prospero’s eventual death in the end of the story.

The conflicts overall play a major part in the story. As Kenneth Graham says, “If time is the destroyer of all things material, so, too, is the pendulum the destroyer in the pit, and the ebony lock in.” The critic is explaining the overall conflict of this story, and displays how the ebony clock is the symbol for death. In all, conflict is important to the story, as it ties back to the themes and describes the problems occurred.

In the short story, Poe uses the colors of the rooms in a certain order to show the progression from birth to death. “...at the eastern extremity was hung... in blue… the second chamber was purple… the third was green… the fourth was furnished and lighted with orange--the fifth with white--the sixth with violet. The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet…” The first room was blue, the color of water, the beginning of life. The second was purple, symbolising childhood and royalty, children get weighed on hand and foot and are treated like prince and princesses. The third room was green, plants during the summer when they are at full bloom, the peak of life. Orange was the fourth, meaning autumn and fall, when leaves start to fall off of trees and start to die and decline. The fifth room was white, symbolising old age, when people age their hair turns white. The sixth room was violet, another shade of purple, people start to weigh on you again because you have become dependent on others again and you have become rich in other things such as experiences. The very last room was black, the color for funerals, the black meant death.

Poe’s use of the seven rooms, the clock, and the stranger helps to teach the reader that nothing can escape death. By using these symbols, Poe portray the idea that death can’t be escaped.

As a gothic writer, Edgar Allan Poe created horror using gloom as his weapon. Hidden within the suspenseful story of “The Masque of Red Death” is an allegorical tale of how individuals deal with the fear of death as time passes. Frantic activities and pleasures (as represented by Prince Prospero and his guests) seek to wall out the threat of death. However, the story reminds the reader that death comes “like a thief in the night”(Poe 3), and even those who seek peace and safety shall not escape.
