Poe used many characteristics in his Gothic novel. For example, he used paranormal things, isolated castiles and even wrote about death. In “The Masqued of the Red Death”, the prince had decided to isolate him and his friends in is castile away from all the deses. A masked figure shows up but no one there recognized the masqued face. The prince forcefully tried to catch the figure but the figure kills him and all his friends. Then in “The black Cat”, the narrator got irritated easily and hated everything and also loved drinking. One day he went out to drink and came back wasted. He decides to play with the cat witch didn’t go well. The cat ended up biting the narrator causing the narrator to cut the cats eye out and then later hanging that …show more content…
One possible characteristic trait would be, a dark isolated castle. “When his dominions were half depopulated, he summoned a thousand hale and light hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys”(Poe 34). In Poe’s novel, in this dark isolated castle the prince had all the people he favored most in there, the people that didn’t have the disease. They had a big party just for him where they just dances and talked and ate. In this castle there were also seven rooms and each identified the different stages of a life of a human, but the seventh room was bad news. In summary, the story relates the price, trying to be safe and away from the horrible death, he then invites a good selection of his friends to be in seclusion in his castle away from all the dying people. This all changes when paranormal figure enters the castile in a like manner. “The figure was tall and gaunt, and shrouded from head to foot in the habiliments of the grave. The mask which concealed the visage was made so nearly to resemble the countenance of a stiffened corpse”(poe 50) The figure was not recognized and had looked different then the rest. In conclusion, the two characteristics in “The masqued of the Red Death, an isolated castle and paranormal trates were both shown in Poe's
Edgar Allen Poe is one of the most well known poets. Poe is known for his eerie and terrifying tales. Poe has three similar stories that stand out. “ The Cask of Amontillado” is about a man named Montrassor looking for a way to seek revenge on Forchanado. Montrassor seals Forchanado into a room behind the wall in his catacomb. “The Black Cat” is about a man that has a strong loathing of his cat and kills it, as time passes, he finds another cat and absolutely hates it, more than the last cat. This loathing leads him to get frustrated about it and kills his wife because she tries to stop him from killing it. Lastly “The Tell-Tale Heart” this is about a man that is disgusted by this man's eyes, so he stalks him and then suffocates him and then cuts him up and goes crazy because he doesn’t want to get caught. These three stories are all similar but all have I different kind of intensity to them.” The Black Cat” is the spookiest one out of the three, the narrator because
“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dreamed before” (Edgar Allan Poe). Darkness and sadness are strong characteristics of Edgar Allan Poe’s writing. The tragedies during his life, such as the death of his biological and adoptive moms, followed by the death of his young wife Virginia were important factors which formed his gothic style. Poe is known for his drinking problems and use of drugs. Those habits had a big influence in his life and in his works.
Edgar Allan Poe was a great writer and he used different types Gothic techniques which made his writing better. Grotesque, supernatural, dark and spooky and way of defining Poe’s
While each of his stories has some theme variation, a universal theme for all of Poe 's Gothic stories is the dark nature of mankind. Poe was a Dark Romantic which means that while he agreed with the supernatural elements, focus on nature, and strict poetic structure of Romanticism, he did not share the Idealistic view of humans that many of the other Romantic authors of his time stressed. Poe constantly demonstrates through his works, that humans can always start off and appear to be normal and then somehow is overcome by the darkness of their mind and souls.
Some similarities in mood are creepy and scary. These are common moods in Poe’s works. The differences are in “The Black Cat.” The mood is more hostile, cruel, intense, and insane. In “The Masque of the Red Death” the mood is also threatening and ominous. One quote that really shows the mood in “The Masque of the Red Death” is this: “And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life of the ebony clock went out with the last of the gay. And the flames of the tripods expired. And the Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.” This really made the mood creepy. In “The Black Cat,” this quote shows the mood really well: “The corpse, already greatly decayed and allotted with gore, stood erect before the eyes of the spectators. Upon its head sat the hideous beast whose craft had seduced me into murder, and whose informing voice had consigned me to the hangman. I had walled the monster up within the tomb.” The really made the mood intense and insane. In conclusion, “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Black Cat” includes a lot of similarities and differences in
Death is a terrifying prospect for most people , imagine being face to face with it. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death”, the revelers were in this very situation. Masque of the Red Death DEATH, BLEEDING FROM ALL PORES. Edgar Allen Poe’s “Mask of the Red Death” has all of these horrible things, but it makes a great story for author’s craft. Authors craft pops up everywhere in this story from amazing imagery to a great setting. Reviewing various Poe’s characters created by his acknowledgement, the melancholy in his life can be seen vividly with the help of his textual evidence. Edgar Allan Poe’s, “The Masque of the Red Death”, introduces Prince Prospero, the person who believed he could conquer death, and devastation that the “Red Death” had caused to the kingdom, taking away several lives. Prospero denies and tries to conquer death, but instead Red Death conquers him leaving darkness and death’s behind. Edgar Allan Poe is a writer renowned for his incorporation of macabre themes into his variety of texts. These texts include The Raven, The Black Cat and The Tell-Tale Heart, all Gothic texts by Poe which have contributed immensely to the Gothic genre. Readers categorise them as works of Gothic literature, but what attributes found in these texts causes it to be classified as Gothic?
Edgar Allen Poe is one of the best known American gothic writers . He has written many stories but his style is shown when he uses the gothic elements in his stories. He has many recurring ways at which he uses the gothic elements. In most of Edgar Allen Poe’s novella he frequently uses the selfishness and blood ,showing some of his style.
He was a lot different than most. He rarely made mistakes, and all poems usually just came from absolute nothing. His point of view in his poems also made the reader more scared and made it feel more real for the reader. Poe’s poems are all written in a first person. Readers thought they could see the writer’s state of mind better if it were in first person. I’d say it almost gives off a full direct effect of the poem by feeling the fear and mysteriousness of it all. They treat the emotions of the poet as if it is their own. Poe’s gives the reader these mixtures of hints and clues that fires up the imagination of the reader, just like his poem “The Fall of the House of Usher,” in which Poe started off with memories that connects with readers well. He wants to set the tone of the reader right off. He always takes the reader to that fantasy, but realistic like world. His influence of his gothic novels are death involved happenings, and very terrible events.
This reveals that death is inevitable. By using the words “pains” and “blood” the author creates an atmosphere of horror and fear. This allows the reader's mind to create an open depiction of death. People are frightened of the Red Death, countless people dying, many are trying to escape they are so traumatized that people won’t help each other.
To Begin, “ The Cask of Amontillado” shows characterization when the narrator acts suspicious to Fortunato. “The gait of my friend was unsteady, and the bells upon his cap jingled as he strode” (Edgar Allan Poe 3). This shows characterization, because it shows how devious Montresor is. Next, “The Tell-Tale Heart” shows characterization when the narrator takes his anger out on an old man. “Now this point you fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing” (Edgar Allan Poe 1). This shows that, the narrator takes his sensitivity to another level. In “The Black Cat”, the man knows he type of actions he had taken were wrong. “For my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition” (Edgar
In Phantasmagoria, one story that the group performed that really stuck out to me was “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allen Poe. To sum the short story up, it is about a prince named Prospero who hides away in his castle with his wealthy friends trying to hide from “The Red Death”, which in the play is shown as a skeleton-like ghoul, but in the actual story, the Red Death plague is personified by a victim of it. There were many performers in the show, I heard all of their names, but in truth the names were not important. For the show itself, all the characters had names, but they acted out and performed poems and short stories, in which they went under different aliases, so it is difficult to have kept all the names in check.
