The light from the TV screen illuminated the bedroom in a flickering glow, as the screen constantly changed between a scene of a mass murder, and a female reporter in a black suit and tie. The reporter's voice droned on about how and when the murders had been committed, and how the culprit was expected to be the same Stihr as last time. The screen flicked back to the heaps of bodies, now closed off to the public by yellow warning tape. A vast and seemingly quixotic amount of blood covered the disemboweled and occasionally dismembered corpses of the night-shift workers at the Empire State Building. Alastor gagged at the sight of the bodies, closing his eyes and grasping blindly for the remote. Seconds later, his fingers closed around the
Fifteen year old Conrad Clark just came home from basketball practice where he was absolutely exhausted. He is the best player on his undefeated school basketball team. He lives with just his mom and only sibling Thomas after his father had recently been murdered by an unknown killer. As he approached the front door of his massive three story mansion located basically in the middle of nowhere surrounded by a lake and lots of wildlife, a gut punching feeling went through his body. He was remembering what had happened before he left for practice. He got in a huge fight with his mom about his grades in school, and was regretting some of the things he said. He goes through the front door and goes up to his bedroom on the third story. He lays down on his bed and he sees a note telling him that his mom and Thomas, are at a party and will be gone all night. He puts the note down and closes his eyes. About forty five minutes later he wakes up to his alarm going off. He turns off the alarm clock reading 10:30 p.m and is wondering why his alarm went off for no reason. He lets it go past him and goes down to the first floor and turns the television on. He turns on his favorite show, Criminal Minds, when Bang! At that moment Conrad knew that something bad
Mass murderers are a diverse group of people. They are a danger to society and it is important to understand the wide variability among these people. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, a crucial statement is declared about how he views the inner workings of men, as well as how men interact with women in society. The narrative is based around the horrific murder of two defenseless women, which seems to have been committed by a mystery “beast”. Poe demonstrates the primitive violent forces that exist within people, particularly men, which have the ability to escape in shocking ways, often against a woman. Poe uses violence as a negative, inhumane act, in order to reinforce the innate brutal impulses that are just under the surface of all male beings.
A major concern in the United States is why mass shootings occur and what needs to be done to stop them from happening. Mass shootings have gained a significant amount of attention in 2015. Within the year, a total of 372 mass shootings have occurred in the United States killing 475 people and wounding 1,870. Mass shootings have become a popular trend within the media and have given the impression that it is the new normal. Mass shootings are a dysfunction to society, due to the fact that they create horror and tragedy within the country. Schools, shopping malls, and even movie theatres have all endured the horrific violence. Mass shootings are nothing new, however, they seem to be occurring more often and are becoming more and more violent. The three leading factors to mass shootings are problematic masculinity, mental illness, and gun control.
Plot is defined as, "the authors arrangement of incidents in a story it is the organizing principle that controls the controls the order of events (Meyer,64)." The element of plot is heavily relied on in the short story, "The Killings" by Andre Dubus. The plot which is completely made inside the imagination of an author (Meyer,64), gives the audience important insight to people, places, and events in the story (Meyer,64) . "The Killings" provides a somewhat conventional plot pattern, where the character is confronted with a problem and is then led into a climax, which late leads to the resolution of the story (Meyer,65). The conventional plot is easy to follow and serves as a basis for movies and other
Murder on a Sunday Morning is about an African American boy who was wrongly convicted of murder. He was only fifteen years old when his life changed forever. While first watching the documentary, it seems to the audience that Brenton Butler, the convicted boy, is guilty. Mr. Stephens, husband of the victim, Ann Stephens, claims that Butler came over, tried to take Anna Stephens’ purse, and then before she could comply, he raised his gun and shot her in the face. Sadly, Mr. Stephens was the only eye-witness, which is a major red flag, as he is connected to the victim. After being forced by the detective, Butler confesses. Once defense attorney, Patrick McGuinness is involved, he has Butler tell the court of his innocence and thus beings the criminal proceedings for Brenton Butler.
Eighty-nine years after the Bath School Disaster, the deadliest mass murder at a school in United States history (Dozier), it remains one of the most significant and defining events in my hometown’s history. The great significance of the {impacts of the} disaster is obvious when taking a walk through the memorial park, when time is spent in the Bath School Museum browsing through town artifacts, and especially when walking the halls of any Bath Community School on May 18th, the disaster’s anniversary.
A parent never wants to hurt somebody, but once a person hurts their kids- they need to hurt somebody. Andre Dubus’ short story, “ Killings” begins with Matt and Ruth Fowler attending their 21-year-old son, Franks, funeral. The reasoning behind his death was because Frank had been dating Mary Anne Strout, soon- to- ex wife and mother of Richard Strout’s two kids. Franks first encounters with Richard results in a fight. This act caused Franks parents, especially Ruth, to question their son’s relationship with the older woman. After Frank refused to end the relationship, Richard proceeded to get his vengeance by shooting Frank in front of Mary Anne, and the two young sons. Matt couldn’t stand the thought of Frank’s killer walking freely on the streets
There has been many mass shootings in the U.S. The deadliest shooting that has ever happened was the Las Vegas one that happened on October 1, 2017. The discussion of gun control has escalated rapidly over the last two decades, and has become very complex. Some people believe that there should be no guns, some believe we need more gun control, and some people believe there should be a ban on only certain guns. This makes for a multitude of opinions. To make the United States a “no gun” country is a task that would be nearly impossible. Many Americans, roughly 270 Million according to a Small Arms survey, own guns (Karp 1). Unfortunately, this number includes guns that are purchased illegally by individuals and groups such as gangs. To get rid of all those guns would not work without an enormous fight from lawful gun owners because taking away guns goes against the rights of every American
"I'm angry someone would do this to us. There are lives ruined, families ruined, and our whole school year is ruined" (Brackely 1). Casey Brackely, once a student that attended Columbine High School, remembers the tragedy of the horrific Columbine shooting that killed and injured many students. Mass shootings in the United States have been on the rise since the 1980’s, especially in the last decade. These shooters motives and profiles are almost all terrifyingly alike. Many of these shooters try to imitate and parallel the tragic shooting of the Columbine High School in 1999. These shootings have made peaceful organizations, such as an elementary school; become a place of violence and death. Currently, in the United States, an epidemic of
A mass killing is when four or more people lost their lives. On March thirteenth, 2013, there was a mass killing in Herkimer, New York. Kurt Myers, 64, went on a shooting rampage in the villages of Herkimer and Mohawk (Campbell and Stanglin, 2013). Law enforcement was notified and multiple agencies were dispatched to the scenes.
Yes, many actions may be inherently wrong regardless of the consequences. Killing an innocent unarmed person is nothing more than murder. Regardless if they believe it was the right thing to do or to better their future and save more lives long term. "For example, the Nazis employed utilitarian justifications for some of their experiments conducted on unwilling prisoners during WWII, arguing that , theoretically, the appalling pain and unhappiness they were causing could in the long run save lives". Mass murder is not acceptable even if it believed that it is benefiting the greater good in the long run.
3. The mass murderer kills due to a warped sense of love and loyalty, a desire to save their loved ones from misery and hardship. Typically it is a husband/father who is despondent over the fate of the family unit. Sometimes, as in the case of the Manson family, the murders are done by a cult group being obedient to their charismatic leader.
