In I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, Angelou uses various stylistic devices and rhetorical strategies such as similes and metaphors. Angelou’s use of similes are used in order to describe her own character. In this, Angelou remarks “For nearly a year, I sopped around the house, the Store, the school and the church, like an old biscuit, dirty and inedible” showing that Angelou's inner feelings of not being good enough to be picked or loved. Correspondingly Angelou felt her skin looked “dirty like mud” showing her inner insecurities of her skin colour being unattractive. In my personality I have a hard time to get to know with people. such as when i came first to Wakefield i had a hard time of getting peoples feeling and there personality. I couldn’t tell by my first impression because i have found it that the person i thought is going to be bad turns to be good. And all I seen come different. So we can’t tell a person with inaccurate assumption. It is hard to tell by first impression but it is important for the next step.

Everyone has primacy effects to the person that he or she first meets, maybe base on the dressing, behaviors, even hair style. People always want to give others a good first impression, especially searching for a job or having an interview, because sometimes it is hard to change the formed first impression, and this first impression may decide whether they can have jobs or not. However, the absolute thing does not exist in the world. A bias named recency effect comes out. Recency effect is something may leads people to change the first impression. Perhaps just a casually action, or an accumulated over a long period hard working, the first impression will be changed. For example, Cady has a not bad impression on Regina, for Regina is really beautiful and cute, like a Barbie doll. But everything changes after Regina seduces Aaron, who is the boy Cady really loves. Maya Angelou was an American author, dancer, screenwriter, actress, poet and civil rights activist. Angelou gained a majority of her fame with the memoir she wrote in 1969, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. This memoir made literary history as being the first nonfiction best-seller by an African-American woman. Angelou received many awards and honors throughout her entire career. Maya grew up there in the rural parts of Arkansaw, and later married to a South African Freedom Fighter. She lived in Cairo with him, there she began her career as editor of the Arab Observer.

First Impressions First impressions are very important. In the Victorian age, people based their whole opinion of someone on first impressions. Most times the first impression of someone is not the way they truly are. Sometimes a first impression can cause you to think negative of someone but later you find out that they are very nice and a very positive person. Maya Angelou is one out of the best known poets. She has written a lot of poems that inspires and assist people with their lives. She has a “desire humbleness to learn and experience all that life has to offer her” (gale biography in context, “Maya Angelou More than a Poet”) which makes her poems have a meaning to them. In addition, Maya Angelou got a lot of pieces of poems considered equality to her experience as a human of the United States during race times and her experience as a person who worked with other civil right activist. Maya Angelou uses deep themes that leaves the reader to think about the topic is being talked about. In her poem, “Still I Rise” she talks metaphorically about discrimination. In the poem, it states, “does my haughtiness offend you? ( the poetry foundation, “Maya Angelou”). This quote from the poem shows how the rest of the poem is about people believe they is better than other people and that the other people should suffer because they are inferior to the people, but the people being abused should not be embarrassed of who they are and be thankful for life(“Maya Angelou More than a Poet 1”).

It takes one tenth of a second to make a first impression. There is evolutionary basis behind this split-second decision, because it was once important to know in an instant whether or not someone is a friend or foe. Unfortunately, research has shown that a first impression is relatively stable and unlikely to change even with prolonged exposure to the person. Many aspects of an individual’s appearance can weigh into a first impression and perception of a person, but the first impression weighs heavily on how we treat a person down the line, and develop both platonic and romantic relationships.

First impressions are always used in setting the tone when you first meet someone. Without the luxury of knowing the persons background, you initially judge someone by the way that person introduces themselves and how they come across to you. By coming across, I mean the way a person carries themselves. For example, if the person comes across as shy and introverted, you tend to think of that person as timid and somewhat weak. However, if that same person comes across as outgoing, confident (but not to confident) and easy to talk to, you look at that person as someone you can count on and possibly a leader. This type of evaluation (even though we all do it) is for the most part not always the right way to evaluate a person.

It has been previously proven, that in the first few moments of meeting someone, we form an opinion of them. The problem with this idea is stereotypes. One of our society's biggest mistake is that we judge people based on what they look like, or how they act.
