(Kennedy, Cohen, and Bailey A127)The man who gave McCarthyism a name, Joseph McCarthy, ruined many lives by accusing tons of Americas of being Communists for about 5 years. The post-cold war paranoia about spies and infiltrates in the American government escalated the allegations to a whole other level, despite the lack of evidence. Many people lost their jobs, went to jail, or became shunned by the public. Senator McCarthy conducted countless numbers of speeches, investigations, and hearings. His actions proved to be so terrifying that very few spoke out against him. Only when taking the claims to the military did the people finally take a stand. Weeks afterward, the Senate condemned McCarthy for “practicing conduct unfit for a member.”

The McCarthy hearings were trials in which Senator Joe McCarthy accused government personnel of being Communists. He exaggerated and exploited the proof and ruined many reputations. Blacklists were created and plenty of employers refused to rent the suspected or accused. Senator Joseph McCarthy wildly raged that Soviet spies had infiltrated the State Department and were re-directing it to support Communism abroad. A multitude of these allegations were false. The lives and reputation of hundreds were ruined by McCarthy’s verbal attacks. He led a craze through government to root out suspected communists. As more and more people were accused, the hysteria increased. The government was powerless to stop the rampant forces of McCarthyism, as government officials feared that criticizing McCarthy’s tactics would result in their being accused. As a result of the senators’ unscrupulous statements, “McCarthyism” is defined as “the political practice of publicizing accusations of disloyalty or subversion with insufficient regard to evidence.” He also contributed the Second Red Scare occurring in the 1950, after his crusade created massive hysteria. Two of the major events in history are the salem witch trials and Mccarthysim. Both of this events have similaritis like how they both accused innocent people wiyh out evidence and also they created fear with in the people.even though they have this thinhs in common the also have diffrences.

The Salem witch trials and the McCarthy hearings have many parallels including destroying livelihoods and causing mass hysteria throughout both of the communities.

There is one thing that is made, always different along being the same. That is history, it can either be good or bad with every passing minute. A recurring pattern has been seen, throughout time and history. The Salem Witch trials and the McCarthy trials is one of these patterns.They both hold an event of accusing others of being something with dubious evidence. Both holding a fear of a certain type of people being among them. Each having an ideal figure to follow that lead to chaos.

“Never let what you don’t know disturb your faith in what you do know” , this quote was one of the famous puritans quote during the time of the 1600s. Puritans were a group of christian people that lived based off of what they believe in. Until in the mid 1600s, an unfortunate event cause them to fall part; accusations of witchcraft. Arthur Miller who wrote “The Crucibles” uses the theme of how fear can motivate you to make different kind of actions to compare to MCcarthyism that occurred in 1950s. In the 1950s, Joseph McCarthy was accusing citizens of communists with no proof, which is what Danforth the judge did in the book; accuses people of doing witchcraft without any evidence. Arthur Miller showcases each character with unique character traits to represent MCcarthyism.

During the Salem witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts and McCarthyism all across America many of the traits were historically similar and based on little or no evidence. When looking back on witchcraft in the 1600s and McCarthyism in the 1940s and 50s life at the time had many influences and many things parallel; both were caused by fear and paranoia and resulted in destruction.

The United States has obtained a respectable and honorable reputation, in which other countries have a tendency to envy. However, certain events embedded within the nation’s past, such as the Salem witch trials and red scare, are often overlooked. These events symbolize times of despair, weakness, and slander, to which the essence of the events is nearly identical. The Salem witch trials can be closely compared to McCarthyism and the red scare, based on the similarities of suspicion, accusation, and prosecution. Despite the difference of roughly two hundred and sixty years, the outcome of such uprisings has remained unchanged. The morals discovered during the Salem witch trials failed to reach the minds of those behind the House of Un-American Activities, and other political figures, such as Joseph McCarthy. The fundamentals of suspicion sparked such events of terror and inhumanity.
