Mean Girls: The Adolescence Stage I will be covering the movie Mean Girls and some major things that the movie has in concepts of the development that occurs in the adolescence stage such as attachment, relational aggression, peer influence, and emotions. You’ve got the pressure of being liked by many peers, and perceived popularity. If you picture an image of the “popular” kids, you quickly realize that they have power but are not all liked so well by many kids and teachers. Teens with high perceived popularity have good social and leadership skills and are attractive and always dressed the best, but they also may be aggressive and can do a lot of damage by bullying, and being mean to other kids. Relational aggression – subtle and indirect aggression that involves gossiping about and ignoring or excluding others. (Page457) Indirect aggression such as gossiping about and ignoring others, even presumed friends, although boys engage in more direct aggression than girls, girls tend to engage in more relational aggression, at least in adolescence (Smith & Rose, & Schwartz-Mette, 2010). In life it is easier to feel good about yourself if you are “popular” than if you are a “nerd”.
