Medellin was founded in 1616 in the scenic Aburrá valley, but remained small until the coffee boom. Medellin now has a population of almost 3 million people, with an area of 362 kilometers squared, and an average temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Medellin is widely regarded in Colombia as a clean, well-organized and economically vibrant community. Its people are hard-working and industrious. Major industries include coffee and flower export, information technology and hotel services. It is also the fashion capital of Colombia. However, there is plenty to do and see in the city itself and the scenic surroundings.
There is a lot to Medellin that the international community does not see. Medellin is also home of Fernando Botero, as well as the annual Flower Festival, a huge event that takes place in the city in late July and early August. Fernando Botero, the most famous man in the artistic world from Latin America is from Medellin. Botero's work can be seen scattered throughout the city. The Flower Festival, is also a major attraction in Medellin. It takes place at the end of July and it lasts until early August. This huge annual event is opened with about 7,000 campesinos parading through the city on horseback. Groups or individuals may have a theme or motto, such as peace, but other prefer to linger along the route provoking cheers from the large audience. Others gallop, or dance their horses decorated in all types of colors and of different sizes for the duration of the parade which goes on for about eight hours.
I admit I was nervous walking though a city with such an infamous past when I returned there 10 years ago. Although I was born and raised in Medellin, I was still cautious about exploring the city. Things may be slightly better since Pablo Escobar's death, but it is still not the safest place to be wondering about. With all the dangerous things going on over
Colombia was one of the three original countries along with Ecuador and Venezuela that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830. Over the last 40 years, there has been a campaign to overthrow the government partially because of the drug trades throughout Colombia. Central America Central America, just south of Mexico and North of Panama, consists of just six countries; Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Of those six, all share a distinct common history except for Belize. Belize for one is incredibly small, and while Spanish is the official language of other Central American countries, in Belize English is spoken. So throughout this paper as I carelessly say 'Central American' I am not including Belize whose history and development was far different than the others. Although Central America is located close to the United States in relation to the Eastern Hemisphere, our ways of life are indescribably different.
Foreigners have more trouble understanding Dia de Los Muertos than any of Mexico's other celebrations. At first glance, they see Day of the Dead decorations which are colored paper garlands, little skeletons performing daily tasks and sugar skulls inscribed with names, which remind them of Halloween. Other tourists discover that much like Memorial or Remembrance Day in the US, families here visit, clean and decorate graves of loved ones for the

Plan Colombia is a long-prevailing foreign aid package bestowed to the country of Colombia from the United States. This foreign aid package grants substantial financial assistance to Colombia, intending to fight the “War on Drugs” and to reduce the trafficking of narcoleptics, but there is a multitude of other factors and implications, both unintentional or indirect and intentional due to ulterior motives. To accomplish the goals of Plan Colombia, most of the aid has been provided in the form of armed forces. This situation is complicated because of the ongoing civil war between the government of Colombia and the left-wing Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People’s Army (FARC).
