The case of Miguel presents various challenges that should be addressed immediately and assessed accurately in ways that are culturally valid, effective, and in accordance with diagnosis criteria listed in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5, 2013). Delamater & Hasday (2007) stated that various disciplines contribute to an understanding of human sexuality including biology, evolutionary psychology, psychology, anthropology, women’s studies, communications, family studies, and sociology. However, while the field of humanities addresses the range of behaviors like thoughts and feelings associated with human sexuality, it is the sciences that seek to create and assess principal explanatory …show more content…
Miguel’s long history with of alcohol use began when he was 13 years old and at the age of 23 he was arrested for driving while under the influence. Even after his arrest, Miguel continued to drink and believes his drinking is not a problem. Currently, Miguel drinks an average of (2 to 3) rum and coke drinks per day (3 to 4) times a week. Miguel also reported intermittent use of marijuana throughout his lifetime that also began around the age of 13. Miguel used marijuana heavily throughout his 20's and 30's but currently reports smoking one to two joints per month. Additionally, Miguel has smoked a half a pack of cigarettes a day for the past ten years and has no desire of ever quitting. Miguel’s affliction with watching pornographic materials began in his childhood and reports that his first experience with porn occurred when his father gave him a Playboy magazine to look at and told him that he could learn about sex if he looked at these pictures and read the articles. Miguel learned about masturbation by reading an article and since that time his pornography use increases and decreases but has always been present. Miguel was able to look at pictures from magazines for several years but when the Internet 'boomed' porn became more and more of an issue. Over the past 10 years, Miguel has spent 2-3 hours per day on the internet looking at pornography websites; however, his sexual behavior extends beyond the act of viewing pornographic material that includes online chatting, internet hook-ups, sex for pay, going to strip clubs frequently, and sex with strangers. Miguel’s wife is unaware of the extent of her husband’s excessive sexual behavior for which Miguel stated that he does not know why 'those urges'
During the late 19th century, the ideals of middle-class, respectable sexuality were in a state of flux. Published findings by renowned psychiatrists such as Richard von Krafft-Ebbing and Sigmund Freud helped to recreate and build upon sexual knowledge, establishing never before heard of terms for a variety of sexual behaviors. Often, therein lies an implicit bias when codifying topics of study. Therefore, due to the major shifts during the late 19th and early 20th century in how sexuality is classified scientifically and medically, psychiatry plays a primary role in creating concepts such as “normal” and “abnormal” sexuality.

Human sexuality is a common phrase for all, and anything, pertaining to the feelings and behaviors of sex for the human race. Sexuality has been a topic that has been discussed and studied for as far back as 1000 years B.C. and is still being studied today. As the discussion of sexuality has progressed through history, theories have been created based on research and experiments that scholars have implemented, based on their own perceptions of human behavior. Out of the many theories that pose to explain sexual behavior, Sexuality Now explained ten that are seemed to be the most overlapped, and built off of theories. Of these theories, two that were discussed in the text were the behavioral and sociological theory. These two theories cover some of the basic ideas of what could possibly influence a person’s sexuality.
Cabarrus Memorial Hospital (CMH), in the small town of Concord, North Carolina, came to be the vision of Mr. Charles A. Cannon, a mill business owner and the largest employer in the area. Mr. Cannon employed thousands of employees and believed his employee should receive the best medical care. This mission and vision of Mr. Cannon translated into his opening of CMH. For his vision to give his employees the best medical care, he was able to draw in the educational and visionary support of Duke University Medical Center. CMH grew from a 50 inpatient bed facility in 1937 to a 457 bed hospital by 1982. The current case study, by F. Campbell and D. Caldwell, evaluates and analyzes the need and addition of an open heart surgery service at CMH.

In an era where human sexuality has been taboo for many centuries Alfred Kinsey pioneer sexuality research late 1940s and early 1950s, in the highly unsupportive social and political environment of the time. His approach and methodologies provided the foundation for most of the survey research about sexuality and are still cited today as a source of statistical information about sexual behavior (Hock, 2012). However, Kinsey’s research had information gap about how the human body functions anatomically when we engage in sexual behavior.
The movement from “a symbolic of blood to an analytics of sexuality” (148)—from a power concentrated in death to one concentrated in life—resulted in an increased concern with naming and documenting individual presentations of sexuality, in part because sex provided, and continues to provide, a way to access both the life of an individual and the life of a population.
Throughout history it is evident that human sexuality changes do to religious, governmental and societal influences. The perception of human sexuality has gone through many changes such as being very open and unlabeled activity; to being very “conservative” and a topic that shouldn’t be talked about in public or at all. In any case, human sexuality has always been a topic of interest because humans are sexual beings who want to understand the consciousness of themselves as male or female and see their personal response when encountered in erotic experiences with other individuals. Unlike many other species whose sexual force is strictly for reproduction, human’s sexual drive seems to be driven by many factors that intertwine with each other which leads to very different outcomes. Do to these obscure human emotions and personal gratification, sex is always shown every culture’s art, literature, social norms, and laws.
Upon entering this course, my understanding of human sexuality was decent; I was aware of certain aspects of sexuality such as being straight, gay, lesbian, queer, transgender, etc. Nevertheless, I did not realize how expansive sexuality is; it never occurred to me that sexual health, prostitution, marriage, rape, sex trafficking, divorce, families, etc., all fell under the umbrella of human sexuality. Books and essays such as Renee Hill’s Walk Together and David Shneer’s “Out of School” showcased the multiple facets of human sexuality and how terms like queer are not directly related to homosexuality. While sexuality and homosexuality are linked, frequently, people mistake them as being synonymous; before entering this class, I was searching for a definition of sexuality, and often in the thesaurus section of dictionary websites homosexuality and or sexual orientation was considered a synonym of sexuality. Formerly, I too would have agreed they were the same, however, after taking this course, I concluded that homosexuality is just one topic in the broad discussion of sexuality. My understanding of sexuality now is that it
