Medication is a necessary aspect of being human. Without it, our headaches and allergies would run rampant. We take these over-the-counter drugs to cure our pain or a runny nose out of free will. Other prescription drugs can help level out the mind of someone who is mentally ill will dangerous tendencies or take the pain away from someone with broken bones. Because of medication billions of people worldwide are helped. However, there is much more to medicine than helping someone 's cold. It saves lives. Medication should be enforced, but only when the health and safety of others is in jeopardy. When one is unable to make their own conscious decisions, medication should be administered with the oversight of a professional and a caretaker. In a situation where a child has a medical condition that requires medication for treatment, the decision on whether that child takes what is prescribed is up to the parents of the child. Also, adults with mental handicaps should also have their pills regulated by a caretaker. Also, adults with mental handicaps should also have their pills regulated by a caretaker. In neither of these situations should the government interfere. The government should, however interfere when a patient become a threat to the public. For example, hypothetically, if someone with preexisting mental issues and is not on medication, put imitate danger on those within proximity of him/her this person should be detained and given medication to help them calm down.
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most powerful and greedy industries in our country, with a goal to make as large a profit as possible, at the expense of the sick.
With access to prescription drugs, people are able to treat a multitude of diseases and illnesses. These drugs help deal with pain, inability to sleep, depression, and much more. Every day we are increasingly living in a world where there is better living through chemicals. However, what most do not seem to see is the rising tide of pain, illness, and ultimately death being caused by the pills people take every day. Most keep drugs in a special place in their minds, where they see them as harmless. Sadly, this is not the case, and in some cases our prescription drugs can be just as harmful as illegal drugs (King 68).
The intended use of medications is meant to improve a person’ health, it is very important the individual administering medication or self-medicating use the drugs correctly, by following the doctors’ instruction for the medication prescribed. Medication is given to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness. Medication can be very dangerous, which can potentially cause harm or even deaf if it’s not used properly.
In today's society people are quick to find easy and fast ways to make them feel better or reduce stress leading to long term health problems. Medication is designed to ease someone or somethings pain, but overusing a drug can result in side effects that can force someone to need more drugs to get better. Siri Carpenter believes that the use of multiple and unnecessary medication is escalating and frightening. “The use of multiple, often unnecessary medications — especially among older people — is an entrenched, escalating, frightening, and mostly unexamined problem in modern healthcare care,” (Carpenter 1). People find it easy to take
Commercialized on TV as the only solution to our numerous problems, Big Pharma preys on people who struggle through life. Although seemingly meant to heal, pharmaceutical drugs have destroyed countless American lives instead because gullible patients rush to their doctor demanding prescriptions. Want to lose weight? Give me a pill. Want more intense sexual encounters? I need a pill. Want to grow longer, shinier hair? Hey, I’ll just pop a pill. Although some medical conditions do require medication, not every case of discomfort should be treated with highly addictive prescription meds nor should those drugs be trafficked via commercials that target a hypochondriacal nation of couch potatoes too lazy to put forth the time and effort to prevent disease. Instead, far too many Americans simply find a quick fix at their local pharmacy. These prescriptions lead to addiction and in the end death. Therefore, if I could take away any one invention from mankind it would be the crass commercialization of pharmaceuticals.
We in America tend to take medications for almost any problem we have, from headaches to gastrointestinal pain, to more serious chronic disorders such as depression and attention deficit disorder. While many of the uses of such medications may be necessary and legitimate, many are not, and due to this fact, many people become dependent on medications, mentally, and or physically. This problem is not simply the fault of the individual; in fact, the blame can also be placed upon the medical community, and the pharmaceutical companies who produce the drugs. How often can one turn on the television to see advertisements for Claritin, Aspirin, Pepto-Bismol, or even Zoloft or Ritalin? The pharmaceutical industry is motivated by monetary
Each person is an individual who can consent to being given medication and who is informed fully about the kind of medication they are going to receive. Their choices should be informed, with a doctor’s advice they can choose the best medication for their condition. They are allowed to refuse medication if they want to. Te carers have to be aware of all medication. They can review their care plan at any time if there is a health change. If the person is considered to be lacking the capacity to judge for themselves what kind of medication they receive, the Mental Health Act says that a professional can decide what kind of medication to administer.
Drugs have different effects on your physiological state of well being. Drugs can inhibit your ability to thinking rationally and make smart decisions. Drugs can alter your physicological systems in your body. They can speed up or slow down your circulatory –respioratory sytems; causing an imbalnce of homeostasis in the body. This can eventaully cause your body stress and can create an illnesses such as a heart attack, rapid heartbeat, and major effects on the liver. Emergency room visits have significantly increase in recent years because of overdoses of prescrition drugs. Nearly 28,000 people died in 2007 beause of unintended drug poisioning (ONDCP, 2011). Beacuase of these adverse affects on our health; this is why prescription drugs are a rising public health problem. It is also an issue that we should care about because this is a problem that not only affects the health of individuals but the economy as well. According to CDC-NCHS the United States spent for $234.1 billion in 2008 on prescription drugs. However, the goverment has implemented plans to prevent this public health issue from progressing. The plan consists of educating parents, youth, and patients about
Some people believe that modern medicines are a better choice for healing, rather than the holistic approach. Qiuping Gu, the author of Prescription Drug Use, explained in his studies, “Over the last 10 years, the percentage of Americans who took at least one prescription drug in the past month increased from 44% to 48%”(Gu). This statistic shows that Americans are increasingly relying on medicines to heal themselves. This is not to say that prescription medications are the only method of healing for all people. Citizens in support of prescription drugs say that the FDA regulates drugs,
People all over the world, continue to be tendered prescription medication, which in many cases further complicate health issues with its myriad of side effects. In fact, statistics have shown that approximately 100,000 people around the world die as a result of prescription drugs annually (Smith, 2012). On the contrary, according
This is obviously a huge topic in bioethics debates, especially recently after various changes in Federal Healthcare protocols. Some people depend on pharmaceuticals as a daily part of their routine, requiring some medicine or other for a condition or health issue. A prime example of this is the recent hike in the price of epinephrine shots, commonly known as the Epipen produced by Mylan Pharmaceuticals. This medication has seen a huge increase in pricing rising from roughly $50 in 2007 to over $600 this year. This is a shot used for common allergic reactions and therefore is used or carried by millions of people every day. The concern then is that pricing will get too high and patients will have to do without some medications leaving them vulnerable or even helpless in the face of certain conditions.
In the United States of America, there is prescription drug abuse epidemic that continues to be a growing concern. Prescription drugs cause a large amount of overdoses and result in an abundant amount of deaths each year. A government study conducted shows this epidemic is scarily on the rise, “A recent government study found a 400% increase in prescription drug abuse between 1998 and 2008” (Schreiner 531). The excessive use of prescription drug abuse is leading to nonmedical use of the drugs, and creating addiction. Furthermore society is paying an extreme amount of money in this battle. With this drug abuse on the rise, legislators must create a law preventing doctors and pharmacists from over prescribing prescription medications as well a law to require they both participate in drug monitoring programs to prevent drug abuse. Now is the time that doctors and the pharmaceutical industry must be held accountable for their role in causing one of America’s worst addictions. The over medication of prescription drugs in the United States must be brought to an end by legislators creating laws to stop
Since medication use is turning out to be so far reaching, individuals are starting to think about whether medications ought to be legitimized. William Bennett brings up and answers this issue in his article “Should Drugs Be Legalized,” The United States citizens are Bennett's audience and he is asking his audience, to continue battling the illicit drug war that our nation is pursuing. He mentioned four reasons that pro- legalizers feel
Even though people need their prescriptions, the abuse of them is getting out of control and we need to find a way to regulate it better, because it can destroy a family, cause some to become addicted, or even kill them. Prescription drugs are no joke, they can be worse than illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and even heroin. The only difference is a doctor can prescribe these types of drugs. The problem we run into with prescription drugs is there is not enough being done to keep the person from becoming addicted or them selling to others. In 2007 2.5 million Americans abused just painkillers (Drug free world). That is not even including the other two types. Now it is starting to affect teens, one out of every ten teenagers admit to abusing a prescribed drug(Drug-free world).
When you have a headache, what is the first thing you think to do? The average American will reach for a bottle of aspirin, or ibuprofen. What about when you have allergies or a sore throat? Do you run to the pharmacy and see what you can grab over the counter to alleviate the discomfort? We live in a microwave society where people want quick and easy solutions to every problem. Although pharmaceuticals can sometimes provide that quick and easy effect, many people are ignoring the various consequences.
