Medieval Universities
The appearance of universities was part of the same high-medieval education boom. Originally universities were institutions where students could attain specialized instruction in advanced studies. These types of studies were not available in the average cathedral schools. Advanced schools existed in the ancient world, but did not promote a fixed curricula or award degrees. The term university originally meant a corporation of guild. All universities were corporations of students or teachers. Guilds were originally established to protect the interests and rights of the members. This is usually done by filling out a questionnaire. At this point in time, the student has already endured a full term of a professor. If the professor is doing a horrible or unfair job, the student is forced to endure this without any relief. Not only does this affect the student's drive to learn, but also his ability to learn. Having a poor professor hinders the student's learning capabilities. When this happens, the student has usually forgotten most of what he learned by the end of the term. This makes a total waste of time and money.
As for medieval times, the student guilds began to have enormous power during the 13th century. Students could discharge professors that did not meet the specifications of a good professor. The students only had to refuse to attend the classes. Professors of this time also had to pledge allegiance to a guild. The guild would provide the professor's salary. Professors were dependent to the students and had to receive permission from the students for any changes. Holidays and beginning and duration time of lectures were decided by the student guilds. With the passage of time, guilds began to structure the curriculum, and the time duration of each subject. A fine would be imposed if the professor omitted material or went over the designated duration time of lectures. Early modern Europe, specifically Spain and England, was going through major growing pains in the period before discovery and settlement of the New World. Recovery from the Black Plague, religious reformation, and newly formed nation-states were on the forefront of these changes. The political environment, economy, and religion were all intertwined during the upheaval of the Old World which proved to be a driving force in the search for and eventual settlement of new lands.
The Middle Ages is a time period that took place between 500’s and 1400’s In Western Europe. This was a time of feudalism, sickness, death, poverty, war, and faith. In this time people had a government called feudalism which was a political, economic, and social system in which nobles were granted the use of land that legally belonged to the king as payment for their military, their loyalty and protection. There was also a manor which had a manor house, a church, a village, and farm land. In medieval times people went through hard time and many were unsafe there were many deaths and diseases which at the time a disease basically meant death. There are many names you could call the Middle Ages but the two best that describe this time period
The Middle ages came after the fall of Rome, no single state or government united the people who lived on the European continent. Instead, the Catholic Church became the most powerful institution of the medieval period. Kings, queens and other leaders derived much of their power from their alliances with and protection of the Church. There were many different events that occurred during the middle ages that gave this time periods all of the different titles. The impacts on the middle ages were feudalism, dark ages, and most importantly faith.
Universities are schools that help someone continue his ed- ucation beyond high school. A university can help both men and women enjoy a more successful life. It helps prepare people for professional jobs such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, and teachers. It gives a person a greater admiration of the arts, literature, history, sociology, and science fields. Also, a university education allows people to participate with better understanding and influence in community events. Numerous uni- versities offer classes known as individualized- study or self-directed classes. These types of classes do not have formal classroom sessions. Students work on their own assignments out- lined by class materials. They finish the work at their own pace with the help of a faculty member. In this kind of class, the pupils may use computers, individually-assigned lab booths, and other learning aids.
There are many contrasts in the beliefs and values of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages was a time of great suffering, including famine and widespread disease. The Renaissance, however, was a revival of art, learning, and literature. Their views of the purpose of life in the present world and man's place in the world was, perhaps, the greatest contrast. However, their views on politics, religion, and education were very different as well.
In 1852 when John Henry Newman wrote his essay, “The Idea of a University,” he wanted to convey that a University’s purpose was to be able to educate first-rate members of the social order. Newman’s theory, although over a hundred years old, still applies to today’s college students; many are seeking higher educations to not only lead to successful careers, but to also become an improved person in society.
The Middle Ages was an era that has been described with many different labels, which are all backed with various events. The period had both positive and negative cultural effects. This era brought many different achievements in the religious, political, literary, and architectural fields. Although many cultural advances were made, it did not come easily due to much conflict between countries and beliefs.

A set point in the historical time line stands as the medieval period. The medieval period in history was the era in European history – from around the 5th to the 15th century, coming after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and preceding the start of the early modern era. This historical time period has been long since been the victim of film directors and romantic novelists, which has lead to the common, but false, idea of the medieval period consisting of knights and damsels in distress, wizards and dragons, and castles and battles. Although mainly wrong in most parts and being highly historically inaccurate – some aspects of the dramatic works do play true to the original time period.
The Medieval Ages that descended upon the Europeans following the deconstruction and devolution of the formerly grand institutions of the Roman Empire left a world darkened to the eyes of history. The world lost touch with simple concepts to a modern history student of writing, economy, culture, and government—the mainstay of that which we cannot see ourselves without—civilization. What was left of Europe was a state of chaos.
