Mel Brooks A Modern Day Renaissance Man of the Arts “Humor is just another defensive against the universe,” famous words from Mel Brooks. He protects all of us with the films he writes! Mel Brooks is known for his comedy. Not only is he a writer, he's a comedian. Unknown to most people, Mel was telling jokes even before he knew that he wanted to be a comedian! Of course, he has many other talents that make him a modern day Renaissance man. Childhood To understand how Mel Brooks became the modern day renaissance man he is today, we need to start at the very beginning. Mel Brooks was born on June 28, 1926 in Brooklyn NY. He lived at 365 South 3rd Street in Williamsburg. Ordinarily, he had a difficult childhood. Unfortunately Mel got bullied at school because he was a small, sickly boy. He started his career by working at Catskills. His first big hit movie, The Producers, won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay in 1968. In The Producers, Mel Brooks was the writer and director, and he did some voiceover work. Only a few years earlier in 1964, his animated film, The Critic, won an Academy Award for Short Subjects. In The Critic, he was the creator and narrator. This charm started as a young boy who got bullied, and followed him as he entered his career, and had a hard time financially. Because of the fact he understood comedy, he has won many awards. These awards are proof that Mel Brooks really is a Renaissance
