Memory is a vital component in our body in which shapes who we are, considering the memory is where all our knowledge and past experiences are stored. As the knowledge and past experiences we gather throughout our lifetime are irreplaceable, that is why we must ensure that our memory systems are kept in perfect condition, making sure that we put effort into enhancing our memories in keeping what we cherish the most. Researchers have shown that it is possible to use techniques to ameliorate memory production.
TYPES OF MEMORIES
Memory is an essential segment within the human body, in which plays the role of being able to encode, store and retain and subsequently recall information from past experiences including previously learnt facts, figures, experiences, impressions, skills and habits (Source 2) . As memory can then be separated into different sub-units each one having its own speciality function within the memory that as a whole helps the memory function appropriately. It can firstly be broken down to Sensory memory, short –term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Immediately when a memory is generated it is stored, into STM and depending on its use eventually into LTM. The memory acts as a filter, processing through pieces of information and past experiences to evaluate whether it is useful or not.

There are 3 necessary steps/types that are crucial to forming a lasting memory. Step 1: sensory memory, step 2: short-term memory, and step 3: long-term memory. Sensory memory is the shortest memory in the shortest- term memory element.One of the types of memory allows you to remember information through the 5 senses. The brain will remember anything that happened from 1 second to 60 seconds using the sensory part of your memory. An example of sensory memory is: I got hit in the head with a purple yo-yo. After sensory memory comes the short-term memory. Short-term memory acts as a “scratch- pad” for temporary recall. Short- term memory holds small amounts of information. Anything something that took place in front of your eyes for longer than 60 seconds, the short-term memory section of the brain will remember it. The multi-store model of memory (eg, Atkinson and Shiffrin 1968) claims the memory can be sectioned into three distinctive parts: sensory store, short-term store (STM) and long-term store (LTM). Eysenck and Keane (2005:190) states that data is first encountered by the sensory store, then depending on the attention given, is processed to the STM and finally - if rehearsed - continues to the LTM.

According to the Atkinson-Shiffrin Theory, memory involves three related processes; Sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Together these processes provide the pathway for environmental information to be received by the senses and either put to use, store for later use, or neglected altogether. Sensory memory allows environmental information to be retained, which then stores brief sensory events such as sights, sounds, and tastes. Sensory memory allows our brain to make quick reactions and judgements without having to wait on the information to be processed by conscious thoughts.

“Information flows from the outside world through our sight, hearing smelling, tasting and touch sensors. Memory is simply ways we store and recall things we 've sensed.” When we recall memories, the original neuron path that we used to sense the experience that we are recalling is refined, and the connection is made stronger. This information can then progress to short-term memory, and then long-term memory, depending on the importance of the information received.

To remember an event we need to get information into our brain which is encoding, store the information and then be able to retrieve it. In addition, memory or our ability to remember plays an integral role in the building and sustaining of relationships. Additionally, memory is also a process; it is how we internalize and store our external environment and experiences. It entails the capacity to remember past experiences, and the process of recalling previous experiences, information, impressions, habits and skills to awareness. It is the storage of materials learned and/or retained from our experiences. This fact is demonstrated by the modification, adjustment and/or adaptation of structure or behavior. Furthermore, we as individuals, envision thoughts and ideas of the present through short-term memory, or in our working memory, we warehouse past experiences and learned values in long-term memory, also referred to as episodic or semantic memory. Most importantly, memory is malleable and it is intimately linked to our sense of identity and where we believe we belong in the world.
