One in five Canadians experience mental illness in their lives, to put this number in perspective, there are around 36 million Canadians. People that have this disability often experience difficulties with stigma in the workplace. The marginalization of adults with mental disabilities negatively affects the nation’s economy. Because of increased unemployment rates, maintenance difficulties, and impacts on the economy due to decreased productivity.

A mental illness is an issue that affects one’s behaviour, emotions, thoughts and ability to interact with others (Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing 2007). Common mental illnesses in Australia include anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders and personality disorders, with the most prevalent being anxiety disorders and depression. Anyone can develop a mental illness, although suffering from a chronic medical illness, experiencing a highly stressful or traumatic event, having a blood relation with a mental disorder or drug and alcohol use can increase one’s risk (Mayo Clinic 2015).

The Australian Government and all state and territory governments share responsibility for mental health policy and the provision of support services for Australians living with a mental disorder. State and territory governments are responsible for the funding and provision of state and territory public specialised mental health services and associated psychosocial support services. The Australian Government has primarily taken the lead in national mental health reform initiatives but also funds a range of services for people living with mental health difficulties. The importance of good mental health, and its impact on Australians, has been long recognised by the Australian Government and all state and territory governments.

Mental health services has given significant impact and influence on mental health nursing practice (Ricard, Page & Laflamme 2014). This is due to the fact that nurses have shown leadership in the clinical setting and have adapted the needs of their consumers to their services in the primary health care setting (Ricard, Page & Laflamme 2014). However, according to John Crowther & Theresa Ragusa (2011), mental health nursing has declined in New South Wales (NSW). Their study provides insight on the realities of the mental health nursing practice particularly in NSW. (“Mental Health Conditions.”) It is a condition that keeps the person from coping with their everyday lives if it is not addressed and properly treated. Mental illness is a sickness of the mind that may involve a mental breakdown so serious that the patient must have special care or in some cases be admitted to a mental hospital. Mentally ill people are sick, just as people suffering from sore throats or heart disease are sick.

Most people need the support from others but many people who are suffering from a mental illness may have agoraphobia. This is extreme anxiety about going out in public places as well as being in situations. There are only one hundred, two thousand, eight hundred and five practitioners in Australia, whereas there are over 1 million people who suffer from mental illness in Australia. This means that practitioners are so busy they may not have time to deal with people who are in need of some canceling. Due to this, it can actually lead to mortality, so there is not enough reinforcement in the world. By saying the wrong point to people can actually form them to be worse.

A mental health issue is when a person’s psychological and/or emotional well-being prevents them from functioning in some way. In the years 2014 and 2015, 4 million Australians have been reported as having a mental or behavioural condition. SANE Australia says that 45% of Australians will experience a mental health issue in their life. It was also noted that young adults and older adolescents had higher reports than other age groups. For men the ages where 16 – 34 years and for women it was 16 – 24. A mental disorder is a term used to describe a person suffering from the effects of a physiological impairment that effects either a person’s mood or/and behavior. The most common mental disorders known to the population are depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Another term for mental disorder is mental illness; this term is usually used to describe issues like dementia, autism, and other illnesses described as developmental mental disorders. They are all related and all fall under the category of Mental Disorders.

According to What Is Mental Illness, Mental illness is defined as a health condition that involves changes in thinking, emotion, or behavior (Parekh America Psychiatric Association). Mental illness can be caused by genetic, psychological, or environmental factors. As stated in NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness, “Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.—43.8 million, or 18.5%—experiences mental illness in a given year. Approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S.—9.8 million, or 4.0%—experiences a serious mental illness in a given year” (NAMI). There are many different types of mental disorders. A few common mental is orders are bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and autism. In many cases, people suffer from more than one mental disorder at a given time. People who suffer from mental illness often struggle with getting the proper diagnosis and medical assistance, but this is not always the case. Programs need to be put in place to assist those with mental illness and ensure that they are treated fairly.
