On September 9, 1850 California became the 31st state, how this came about is “Mexico and the United States singed a treaty which ended the Mexican war and yielded a large portion of South west including present day California.” Previously in January 1848 gold had been discovered on the American River near Sacramento this rushed California’s admittance to the union. Furthermore, “in 1849 California sought statehood and heated debate in the U.S. congress arising out of the slavery issue. California would enter the Union as a free, non-slavery state by the compromise of 1850.” It was easy for California to be a part of the United States but it took the elected officials a while to get the constitution together. “The office of governor was first established in 1849, replacing the succession of military governors that had overseen the territory since its annexation.” “A governor of California is an elected constitutional officer, the head of the executive branch and the highest state office in California.” How the California governor is elected by popularity vote that happens and they can be elected only two terms. “The qualifications of a California governor are: they may not hold any other public offices, engage in any lobbying, accept honorariums.
