Miami Beach was always the attractive destination in South Florida because of the beaches, glamorous hotels and real state. On the other hand, Downtown Miami just miles away on the mainland was not in the radar for investors, because it was a ghost town after office areas and it lacked residential areas, museums and recreation centers. Due to the lack of residential development most of the work force lived in the suburbs leaving a lifeless downtown after offices closed. However, some neighborhoods adjacent to the downtown such as Brickell, started growing transforming from small residential areas into an economic capital and urban core connecting the downtown.

Another area that was redeveloped was next to the American Airlines Arena, which finally has a new park with the PAMM-Perez Art Museum Miami and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.

Urban Redevelopment Area

Brickell City Centre is a mixed-use development that includes a residential tower, office building, hotel and a shopping center. The idea was to create a space in the downtown where you could work, live, dine and shop. Since downtown is under an urban redevelopment the Brickell City Centre is expected to transform the area from a business district to a whole new experience by bringing life into the neighborhood and becoming the local amenity. The project also includes an integrated Metromover station and underground parking.

The complex was design in a way that it didn’t disrupt the urban fabric by keeping the blocks and existing streets in place and instead creating an extension of the city. Brickell City Centre has created a new town square for the downtown. The most challenging part was to keep the connectivity between all blocks without disrupting the existing grid, and it was possible by creating a platform design that allows pedestrian to go to either building without crossing the street. Above the platform there is a climate ribbon, which is a high-tech canopy that provides shade, serves as a passive cooling system and collects rainwater that is used for the landscape area
