“Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry over the water bye and bye ole man comin’ down the line whip in hand to beat me down but I ain’t gonna let him turn me ‘round.”(Taylor pg. 242). This poem represents the hardships that the black community had to face and the resilience that the black community had to have to survive. Roll of Thunder hear my cry by Mildred B.Taylor takes place around the 1900’s while slavery had already ended but segregation was still in the air. Blacks were treated unfairly and cruelly by many whites. Avery is a mean and selfish coward and his actions show this regularly. TJ cheats on a test and blames Stacey without remorse or sorrow after Stacey took the blame for him. After school T.J. cowardly runs to the Wallace store to avoid Stacey. He was scared because he knew Stacy was upset because he did nothing to stop Stacey from being blamed for His cheating. Because he cheats again, T.J. fails eighth grade. T.J. blames Mrs. Logan’s teaching skills for his failure though it was his own lack of effort. His behavior leads to mama getting fired. Another event is when the Simms Brothers beat up TJ. He goes to Stacy's house because he is scared and hurt and he knows Stacey would help him. Even though he betrayed the Logans, Stacy takes him home to make sure he is safe. TJ is a foil to …show more content…
That makes him a foil to Stacey. TJ Avery is a very bad role model he is disrespectful untruthful and he thinks he doesn't have to take consequences for his actions. Stacey Logan is an honest loving boy who will protect his family even if he will have to lose a friend on the way. TJ and Stacy have many differences such as priorities. TJ doesn't really focus on school because he failed eighth grade twice. And Stacy loves his family, and he acts as he is the man of the house when Papa's gone. TJ is untruthful leading to Stacy taking the blame for cheating. TJ and Stacey are similar in some ways but when compared their actions and words show for each ,other in better or
His attitude changed based on the environments he was in. The main setting in the book was unknown city. The unknown city was the birth place of TJ and it was where he grew. In his teenage years, he made bad decision, did everything the gangs want him to do. When he was 13 year old he was sent to the foster home care. There he had people who cared about him. After living in a loving home for two years, his mother suddenly wanted him back. When he went back the only way for him to survive his environment consequently is to join the gang. There wasn't much of a problem with his mother anymore. He has to fight to live.
When Stacey takes the blame for T.J.’s cheat sheet, he shows courage because T.J. was going to get into big trouble and Stacey didn’t want T.J. to get into trouble so what Stacey done was….
TJ gets himself in trouble with R.W. and Melvin Simms, two white brothers. The boys only want TJ around so they have someone to put the blame on and make fun of him. When TJ wants a very nice handgun at the Barnett Mercantile, the Simms brothers fool him into thinking that his dream is about to come true. RW and Melvin convinced TJ to try to steal the gun. They were caught in the act and the brothers punished TJ horribly. TJ tapped on the Logans door in the middle of the night. Stacey and Cassie answered the door. They knew they had to help him despite the negative acts against their family. “Stacey? I whispered afraid of what he might do. As far back as I could remember, Stacey had felt a responsibility for TJ I had never really understood why. Perhaps he felt that even a person as despicable as TJ needed someone he could call “friend”, or perhaps he sensed TJ’s vulnerability better than TJ did himself. Stacey, you ain’t goin’ are you?... You go on back to bed Cassie. I’ll be alright.” (pg. 249) This quote is a prime example of Stacey’s courage. Stacey knows that helping TJ could get him in trouble or even killed. Stacey is a true friend, and a brave one too.

Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry is set during the Great Depression, in the rural areas of Mississippi. The majority of the people in this community are sharecroppers, who are greatly dependent on plantation farming. The Logan family is fortunate because they have a piece of land of their own, so unlike other black sharecroppers they do not have to be dependent on the whites. However, due to the sharp decrease in the price of the cotton crop the family have to work hard to keep it in their hands, whilst also providing food in order for them to survive. The situation is further worsened because of the severity of racism and segregation in the society. The Logans are one of the few families
TJ tricked Stacey into giving him the coat and then he brags on about it in front of his school friends. Although he managed to not get caught cheating last time, Mrs Logan catches TJ cheating in the final exam and fails him. Out of spite TJ runs to the Wallace store and told them that 'Mrs Logan failed him on purpose and said she wasn't a good teacher'. This incident shows that TJ is very foolish and he is hurting his own community because of something he did wrong. When the Logan children find out, as usual, TJ denies the whole thing and blames it on Little Willle.
During the climax of the book, the beating of the Averys, Stacey stayed behind to watch the violent scene while the Logan kids went safely back home to their parents. According to the text, “Stacey whispered “ you take Little Man and Christopher John and y’all-” (Taylor,253). Even though Stacey got cut off he was going to tell the kids to go home, and that he would stay there and keep watch of what was going on between the white and the blacks, which was extremely courageous. The text also says, “Papa spun around suddenly. “Gotta get him out of there,” he said, moving quicker than I had thought possible with his bad leg.” (Taylor,259). This shows how worried Stacey’s parents were about him being close to all the fighting, which shows how courageous he was to be there. Stacey’s bravery further proves that being courageous, means you have to stand up for your convictions and
We first meet TJ Avery when Cassie, Stacey, Little Man and Christopher-John are walking to school. Right from the very start we find out that none of them actually likes TJ, except for Stacey. The reader sees that he is a liar, a cheat and a

At the beginning of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (a book about racist plantation owners in Mississippi in 1933, where races were segregated) by Mildred D. Taylor, TJ and Stacey were friends. Then, TJ became friends with RW and Melvin. They stole a pistol and TJ was arrested. This is where the book ends. I think TJ is manipulative because he is dishonest to his teachers, persuasive to his friends, and easily controlled by RW and Melvin.
found something we wanted he did whatever it took to achieve it. T.J. talked about how everybody's “good day” was relevant; “if I’m The Tao Jones, a good day is when I lock onto whatever I’m passionate about and pursue it with abandon” (56). At the time one of his passions was to have the swim team be successful and for all of them to get letter jackets, which in the end was accomplished. Throughout the book, his passion had always been helping people, whether that be his swim team, Heidi and her family, or even the swim team’s manager. When T.J. first meet Icko he was permanently living at All Night Fitness, because he could not afford a home after paying for his son’s college. All T.J. could do at the time was find him and wake him up so that he wouldn’t get caught, but then he got him a job managing the swim team, and by the end of the book he was able to find him a permanent place to live, when his mom “invited Icko to build living quarters on the edge of our property” (219). Without T.J. this living situation would have never occurred, and even though, at the time he felt what he was doing for this man was minimal, it turned out that he played a part in changing the way he was living. It didn’t matter what it was, if it was worth fighting for T.J. dedicated his life to doing
Even though he may get hurt in the process, he still took T.J home with him so that he could keep an eye on him. He showed courage by being the bigger guy and helping T.J till the end. Most people would have left T.J to die. “ Look, Cassie, go on, will ya please? Papa’ll know what to do. Somebody’s gotta stay here case they take T.J off into the woods somewhere. I’ll be alright .”
Hart was able to accurately portray how most guys, and girls, felt in high school. When JD begins to date Veronica, things start to change, and the character becomes harder to connect with on an emotional level. Once Heather Chandler dies, JD begins to show a different side of himself. He changes, because he decides that he wants to make the town a better place. He desires this new town, so that there is no more bullying and Veronica will be happy. He is so determined to make this mythical place a reality, that he begins to kill some of the other students at the school, with no regard to how it will affect the rest of the students. This course of action leads him to lose not only Veronica, the girl he was doing all of it for, but it causes him to ultimately lose his life as well. Hart helped to portray JD’s transformation in his speech, and his body language, to the point that it made the character become one of the least relatable characters.
Even though T.J. and Stacey are close friends they are not true friends. Throughout the book there are little signs that show that they are not true friends. Stacey does not trust T.J. because when T.J. goes
Since the beginning, humans have enslaved or mistreated their fellow humans. Whether it is a matter of race, gender, religion, or otherwise, humans commit horrible crimes against each other simply because they are different from one another. However, throughout history, humans have also protested this abuse. Over time, the mistreatment stops if enough people protest it. This cycle of injustice and protest becomes a recurring theme in Mildred D. Taylor’s historical fiction novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. [Needs summary] In the novel, the nine-year-old African-American narrator Cassie endures injustices such as racial epithets in her textbook, a racist bus driver, and a sadistic twelve-year-old white girl. But there will be protest against all of these, and Cassie will learn valuable lessons from each of them.
