I will be explaining if military style training is needed in our society (Bethel University, 2014). I’ll give the why and why not of this style of training. Is such training needed in our society? Why or why not? The reason people believe that military-style police academy is a good thing because of the unknown in the communities you will face (Bethel University, 2014). By obtaining this training it will help officers become disciplined, will help the officer with control of his use of force, and the officer gains trust in his fellow officers by living, eating, and sleeping together.
The reason people believe that a military-style police academy does not work is that we are not in a warfare environment and that military-style training

In this report I will be going over the importance of training and education within the military, and how they both play very important roles to not only leaders, but the service members within our ranks. The military is constantly training and, we train as we fight. However, before soldiers train, they must be well educated in all areas in which they will be training. Proper education is the key to proper training. I will also discuss the importance of becoming better educated while serving in the military, as it will make transitioning back into the
First, there is lack of information and knowledge on the right police training philosophy, learning approach and training program objectives (CALEA, 2010). This lack of knowledge has immense negative effects on police training, especially because it affects not only senior commanders of police departments but also management, police trainers and other staffs. The other ingredient to police training that lacks is community understanding and support for police training programs (Mitrani, 2014). It is found out that the communities that are served by officers do little to support or appreciate post-academy training programs, which have numerous benefits to communities (CALEA, 2010). For instance, post-academy and field training for newly posted officers helps in the utilization of individual and department creativity, stakeholder collaboration, and effective problem-solving skills and techniques that would improve communal safety and
As you progress towards becoming a police officer, you must obviously go through rigorous training programs. Of these training programs, people must go to a police academy in order to train new officers. In these academies, training is committed to the basics of combat policing such as self-defense, firing range, and field tactics. Police Academies usually take roughly 12 to 14 weeks to train soon-to-be officers on these important basic tactics (BLS, 2010-11).
“When you have police officers who abuse citizens, you erode public confidence in law enforcement. That makes the job of good police officers unsafe.” (Berry) Recently police brutality has become an alarming issue in society. At the end of 2015, thousands of deaths resulted in accusing victims dying in police custody. Individuals in communities across the state are beginning to lose faith in law enforcement in their ability to properly do their jobs. Providing police officers with extensive and innovative training to give them the adequate length of experience and training will decrease police brutality.
As of September 1, 2015, in the United States police officers have killed 776 people and 161 of those people were unarmed at the time of their death (MintPress). There have been too many incidents where police officers have injured or killed someone that could have been prevented. Using maximum force with a suspect has become a routine in many confrontations. Officers have not been given the proper training to deal with individuals and how to handle them without using a weapon. If they were given more training on how to deal with situations resulting in using a weapon to stop an individual during certain scenarios police brutality situations would decrease, lives would be saved, and police would get their good reputation back. However, police departments would have to spend more money on re-training. Some people agree with police brutality and think that a civilian deserved their punishment, which is not right because no one deserves to be beaten or killed. Situations involving police brutality have been increasing throughout the years, which is a problem that must to be solved.
In the article, “Police Academy Socialization: Understanding the Lessons Learned in a Paramilitary Bureaucratic Organization”, Chappell and Lanza-Kaduce discuss the positive and negative effects that occur with type of recruit training, as well as, the outcomes of transitioning towards community policing training. The paramilitary structure entails hard physical training, performing under stress, defense tactics, the use of force, and mastering weapons skills. This paramilitary form of training focuses on being “able to mold them to accept the organizational culture”, drilling recruits on the basics, while preparing them for the demandingness of the job (Chappell, 189). There are numerous pros, which include a prominent chain of command, understanding
Rise of the Warrior Cop, by Radley Balko, centers around police in the United States and how it has gone through militarization throughout the years. Militarization is a process in which the police departments take on tactics that are similar to the tactics used by the military. Police forces were initially made to make our environment a safer place to live in. In this book, Balko explains how that has changed. Practices of policing first began when people would get hired, unofficially, to keep slaves under control and catch them if they try to run away. These people were sometimes known as slave catchers. Soon it evolved into formal policing, allowing police to catch criminals and make the neighborhood safe. However, today it is not so much about catching criminals; it involves a lot of violence and Balko questions whether this is even constitutional. In his writing, Balko brings awareness to the horrible tactics police are using in today’s society and how we could fix it.
In the past, as a move to try and improve police—community relations, police departments all over the country implemented citizen police academies, or CPAs. These were initially implemented during the beginning of the community-oriented policing era, and the first department in the US to have one was the Orlando Police Department in 1985 (Lee, 2016). Since then, CPAs popularity has grown nationally, and police departments all over the country have them. Somewhere between 15 and 20 percent of agencies have CPAs, and they are far more common among those who serve larger, metropolitan areas (Lee, 2016). CPAs teach participants the details of the various functions of the police, including law, patrol techniques, use of force, self-defense, firearms, SWAT, and crime prevention (Brewster, Stoloff, & Sanders, 2005). These CPAs have the possibility to improve relationships between the police and the community given these current issues.
Police need better training so they can know when to pull the trigger . if police had better training it would teach them what task to use in different situations . it also will prevent a lot of deaths agonist african americans . the better training will be a good cause so their officers aren't getting arrested for shooting someone when they weren't taught what task to use in that situation. Some officers don't get caught guilty for example the sander’s case .it isn’t ok for officers to kill innocent bystanders and get away with it .
Police corps training is necessary in our society. This style of training is realistic and is intended to make educated, disciplined, community oriented, and physically fit officers. These are essential ingredients for high performing police officers that will constantly progress successfully into higher levels of leadership roles throughout their careers. There is no amount of training that can truly prepare you for the real life events police officers will deal with once in the field. This is more emphasis of why police corps training is so necessary, making it as realistic as possible. Having police officers that are trained in a Paramilitary format also better prepares them for the serious threats of terrorism that exist in out world
Training Day is a LAPD movie, but the plot makes it stand out. It’s a story of a rookie cop who has his mind set on a goal. Alonzo, (Denzel Washington), a veteran cop who can get him there. The movie follows the cop duo, which feels like End of Watch, and both movies have the same writer. Training Day is action-packed, and makes you think because it sends a message to the audience and the character. I like this movie too because it asks the audience what’s right and what’s wrong. I would also like to mention that everyone is crooked, yet Jake (the rookie cop)is honest. Alonzo stole money from a drug dealer to bribe a crooked judge to get a warrant to break into a richer drug dealer house and to steal his money, so he can bribe russians to
The police academy does prepare you physically and also provides theory that you may use. The academy is also where you learn proper handcuffing procedure, self defense etc. However, to have the academy without FTO or vice versa is ludicrous! When you bring the craft and the profession together then you have a great officer in the making. Most of us learn our skills and knowledge
Over the past several years, there have been several high-profile police-involved shootings, and the justification behind the shooting has been questioned. Several of these shootings have resulted in a subsequent criminal conviction involving some form of a homicide charge for the police officer involved. This has created a great division between those who support and those who oppose the police. Police agencies and community leaders have sought to repair this relationship, and citizen police academies are one potential avenue.
Law enforcement officers are inducted into the police subculture early in their career. As early as the academy, law enforcement recruits begin learning about ethics, rank structure, ethos, and other values. During the academy, recruits are trained on specific tasks tailored to police work from 8 to 16 weeks. They are taught combative skills, marksmanship, defensive driving, and other techniques unique to law enforcement by the academy staff. The academy staff normally consists of seasoned officers that usually have military training or backgrounds. In most cases, recruits tend to emulate or try to identify with these officers.
