Equality has been a hot topic in the past century. Women and African-Americans have not had equality for that long. Women gained quality in the 1920s and African-Americans gained equality in the 1960s. It took them a lot of time to get those rights and dream in Of Mice and Men, show equality must be worked for. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck utilizes the characters of Crooks and Curley’s wife to illustrate that equality takes a long time to come by.
Equality is something Americans strive to provide and maintain. It has become an integral and necessary part of our mosaic culture. Even now to the point that when people think of America, they naturally think of freedom and equality. The institutions of this country have relied upon it, just as it was the created by the events in the laying of moral foundations. However, there was no doubt that women attempted to change their role. For instance, they created groups such as the Daughters of Liberty and the Ladies Association. The Daughters of Liberty was named as the female version of the Sons of Liberty, who were known for throwing chests of British East India Company tea in the Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party (Document A). However, since ladies were not expected to take part in such harsh rebellions, they had their own silent rebellions in which they would boycott the purchase and use of goods manufactured in England by making their own goods, such as sewing clothes. Some women even tried to persuade men to change these roles. For example, Abigail Adams, the wife of politician John Adams, wrote a letter to her husband that included keeping women in mind when drafting the Constitution of the United States. Abigail pleaded her husband to "Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors" (Document D). However, even if John Adams had proposed the idea of giving the women more rights than they previously had, nothing changed and the American Revolutionary

“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation” is what Elie Wiesel stated about speaking out. Equality is when everyone is fair and everyone has a chance at something to conquer. There are many ways that people express their feelings about being equal. Some people protest, and others just keep quiet. Talking publicly about personal experiences is a great way to promote equality.

“What is equality?” one might ask. We all have different views on specific topics and can describe what something truly means to one’s self like in the 3 text, “I have a dream,” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (published; 8/28/1963, genre; narrative and argumentative), “If we must die,” by Claude Mckay (published; 1919, genre; narrative and lyric), & “Harrison Bergeron,” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. (published; October 1961, genre; satirical & dystopian science-fiction short story). In all 3 texts the authors are giving their touch on equality. Equality can convey being treated the same when a colored and a white man/woman are next to each other as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr says. You can also see equality as Mckay who thinks it’s being on the same level of strength and worth as a white man being in the shoes of a colored man. Or equality can be being exactly the same in every way as anyone around you in every exact way in Vonnegut’s eyes. All these 3 authors have a particular view on how to answer “What is equality?” and we can compare their ideas.
Inequality has been a long standing issue in societies. Though many constitutions and laws are constructed from the belief that all men are created equal, the widely accepted declaration has been proven false numerous times by the arise of social injustices plaguing societies around. With issues such as racism, sexism, ableism, classism, ageism, and religious oppression constantly being the topic of conversation it is almost impossible for one to believe that indeed everyone is equal. In actuality the belief that everyone is created equal is a flawed mentality because equality is defined is where everyone is the same despite the differences such as sex and race that makes them different. Humans as mammals were not made to be nor look the same
The theme of equality does relate to todays teenagers. For instance, there are many kids getting hurt and sent to the hospital just because of their race. There are many adults and kids getting assaulted for not doing anything; therefore, they are the ones ending up in a hospital bed. Some kids are responsible for bad actions taken, but there are some kids who have no blame and are still being sent to their death beds. Furthermore, equality causes problems with the whole world; everyone is always arguing about the subject of racism.Equality is something everyone wants, but usually no one treats each other with that respect and the people who don't hurt others in multiple ways.Without a doubt, all teens can learn from the authors valuable lesson
Since it is 2017 many people are blindfolded to the inequality people face every single day. There are still cases of injustice against minority groups and there are still cases of discrimination against people in the “so free, so equal” country called the United States of America. If today’s world was so equal for everyone, then why are there current groups of activists who protest and fight for equality? I am here to tell you why.
