MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL
Although money is good at times, it is basically the root of all evil. I think it would be better to say that the root of all evil is not money itself but people’s desire for money, which they could use to improve their own status, either greed to increase one’s status, or jealousy over losing in the status game to others. Money is the life force of all of society. In every aspect, money determines the value of good, services, and even people’s lives. As we breathe air to function, society relies on finances to function. And if society, the unity of humanity, relies on money, than the leaders of society want to limit and control it to withhold their power over humanity. They do this by limiting what can be bought and sold, while also controlling how much different things cost. These limitations allow our leaders to control our money and, through that, our value and influence to society.

Wealth has both benefits and dangers. Extreme wealth has the power to allow someone almost unlimited potential, however wealth can easily corrupt and change a person for the worse. Once someone has a taste of wealth they always want more. A prime example of this is the Wilsons, Myrtle and George. They both die because they truly believed money could buy them happiness. “[Tom] What do you want money for, all of a sudden?’ ‘[George] I’ve been here too long. I want to get away. My wife and I want to go west.’ ‘Your wife does!’ exclaimed Tom, startled. ‘[George]She’s been talking about it for ten years.’ He rested for a moment against the pump, shading his eyes. ‘And now she’s going whether she wants to or not. Money is the root of all evil, or at least that is many think about it. However, William Hazlitt believes the exact opposite. To him, money is a necessity that brings joy or if not, lack of money causes stress. In his essay, “On the Want of Money”, he conveys the extent to which it is horrible to be in want of money. To live in this world, one needs money to survive. Hazlitt stresses this point by using suggestive syntax, harsh diction and figurative language. He writes in a way that is matter-of-factly and unapologetic to emphasize the need for money and show what the lack of it looks like.

In my perspective, once I get a hold of money I try and hold it as long as I can, because I would spend it irresponsibly. Whoever said money can’t buy happiness? Today, the argument can be made that happiness and consumerism are directly linked. It is fair to say that happiness is a relative term for different people. However, the obtaining of new and shiny things has become such a part of everyday life, that it provides happiness when people are purchasing something new, and causes sadness when no buying is taking place. For many, it seems to be a protective coating against the harsh realities of everyday stresses from a job, or family life.
