Moses In The Odyssey

In reading the first four books of "The Odyssey" we see a lot of different struggles going on but once we focus on Telemachus we begin to capture a more metal picture of this main character. Odysseus's son, Telemachus has lost his father, suitors are pursuing his mother, and he is learning how to grow up without the legendary guidance of his great father. Telemachus appears to be a young, lost boy who is trapped in a world that he has no control over. Feelings of being left behind and not getting the recognition he so rightfully deserves to take over the throne, Telemachus will set out on a journey to find the answers he needs.

The Book of Job and The Odyssey are stories in which two men experience extremely trying times and attempt to navigate their ways’ through it. They face obstacles daunting to anyone such as a cyclops that imprisons Odysseus and his men in a cave and tries to eat them. Odysseus does whatever he can to overcome the obstacles in his journey. Job is faced with watching his entire family and livestock die from natural disasters and marauders, seemingly out of nowhere. Job does what he knows best to overcome his journey. Both Odysseus and Job eventually make it through their journeys, and receive happy endings. They do it in very different ways however. This is because they have differing beliefs on destiny. Here in lies the most significant difference between Odysseus and Job. Odysseus believes his destiny is in his hands and in suit does whatever it takes to control his destiny. In contrary, Job believes his destiny is in the hands of God, so he places his faith and goodwill with God. This essay will examine the differing beliefs in destiny between Odysseus and Job as well as their drastically different behaviors that support this claim.

The stories of heroes have been at the axis of nearly all cultures throughout history. Each different type of religion or culture has their own heroes or legends, each one of them having their differences to go along with the beliefs at hand. On the other hand, each and every hero also has their similarities, which therefore makes them the hero. The setting, events, and characters in each and every story may change, but the characteristics of the hero remain basically the same. Heroes and their stories have been at the center of almost every culture throughout history. There are vast differences among these legends since they have to serve each particular culture's needs. The events, settings and other characters may change dramatically, but the hero is basically the same for all. And the understanding that the use of violence is always justified in the name of the `Gods'.

Many novels can be about more than just one story. The novel, The Odyssey by Homer, is about Odysseus and his journey home from the Trojan War, however, throughout the novel, Odysseus’ son, Telemachus, also becomes a man. Telemachus becoming a man is displayed in many ways throughout the novel. Telemachus stood up for what he believed in. He was also smart about what he did and planned. Another way that Telemachus became a man was that he had his own ideas but he would still listen to others. The novel, The Odyssey, is a story about Telemachus’ journey into manhood.

Why Hermes? Hermes is the messenger to the gods, his Roman name is Mercury. Hermes is the god of commerce, cunning, the inventor of the alphabet, numbers, astronomy, music, the art of fighting, gymnastics, measures, weights, and more. He sends nice sleep, creates dreams, is the traveler of the dead, the protector of travelers, the giver of fame and luck, the protector of animals, and many more things. As god he is immortal.

God told Abraham to send Ishmael to the mountain (add name of the mountain) (21: 12-13), and now demanded of him to bring in Isaac. While you are waiting on God to fulfill your wishes, it is not difficult to convince yourself and others that you trust in his word. However, it is quite another thing to trust and obey the word after the expected promise is received. Did Abraham prefer "to keep to himself," his long-awaited son, or listen to God and return to the Lord? In other words, the test was to proof, if he really believed that God would somehow fulfill His word, and not take his promised heir?

Through modern culture, most people are familiar with the whole storyline of The Odyssey. Odysseus leaves Troy and embarks on an epic journey filled with adventure and fantasy. However, most readers are unaware that there are actually two journeys that are unfolding simultaneously throughout Homer’s epic. Telemachus’ journey greatly differs from that of his father, Odysseus. While it might not be filled with as much adrenaline and adventure as his father‘s journey, Telemachus’ quest is certainly one that should be noted. It is the story of his coming-of-age. Telemachus greatly matures into a more capable young man. However it is debatable if he will every become the man that his father is.

The relationship between man and the gods/God differ from one culture to the next, and span over many centuries. We will look at ways in which gods/God were revered in the stories of Joseph in the Hebrew Bible, and of Odysseus in epic The Odyssey. Both the story of Joseph and the story of Odysseus served as a moral and spiritual guide to their respective cultures. Joseph’s story of his journey through slavery and imprisonment up to royalty exemplifies a journey of humiliation guided by his faith in God. God seems to demand absolute unquestioning faith as Joseph’s life is patterned in such a way that his humiliation turns out to be instrumental in his eventual exaltation.

This extract from Book 6 of Homer’s The Iliad comes at a point where the Trojans are heavily losing to the Achaeans. Hélenus, son of Priam has instructed Hector to return to the city to gather the elders to tell them to offer prayers to the gods so that goddess Athena may pity Troy. It is interesting that Homer should choose Hector to deliver this message rather than an unimportant character; Homer uses it as a devise to develop Hector and make him a more (if not the most) sympathetic character. He shows his contrasting sides; his family oriented side as opposed to the cruel warrior. In the Hebrew Bible and The Odyssey there are heroic figures that play an important role through out each of the books. These heroic figures from the Bible and The Odyssey have many similarities and differences that reflect the different cultures they are from. These heroes are called upon by greater beings, such as gods, to complete difficult journeys and or tasks that the god has made them destined to complete. Each of these legendary heroes demonstrates a particular culture’s needs. Through these journeys and or tasks they are forced to overcome challenging obstacles and make sacrifices.

Moses was a humble man, but God sees that he is mightier than Moses sees himself. When God tells him that he must lead the Jews out of Egypt, he grows fearful and unworthy of such a task. Moses humility toward God is what makes him capable of such a tremendous mission. Although, he would have much rather not lead the Jews out of Egypt because he is afraid and does not have faith in himself, however, he is able to do it because God has told him to and God would not ask him to do so if it was impossible. Moses successfully leads the Hebrews out of Egypt. Moses was capable of freeing the Jews of slavery with a quality of humility (No Title, 1986).
