Introduction There are several different kinds of "common" injuries such as a broken leg, rolled ankle, or a sprained knee. The one I will be researching and describing is the ACL injury. Which is one of the most common sports injuries? As Medical Definition states, "The ACL is a ligament in the knee that crosses from the underside of the femur (the thigh bone) to the top of the tibia (the bigger bone in the lower leg)." In essence, the ACL is a vital part of an athlete 's lateral lower body movement which is crucial in any sport where an athlete or a person moves their legs. Therefore players who participate in any kind of activity that involves moving their lower body need their ACL to function in their activity, or just to even …show more content…
While an X-Ray machine is used for finding cracks, or breaks in bones. Tearing an ACL is surprisingly more common in women, than men. Ever since Title IX came out in 1972, making schools that are government funded to treat women and men equal in the aspect of sports. There was a study done around 1998 by Malone and others between the correlation of ACL injuries in men and women athletes in the college athletic conferences that included the BIG 10, ACC, and the Pac 10. Baker reports that Malone and others study showed that the Big 10 had only about two to three percent of men athletes tear their anterior cruciate ligament compared to eighteen to nineteen percent female athletes were about female athletes tore their ACL 's. While in the ACC about three to four percent of men tore their ACL 's. Compared to women of the ACC which had about fifteen to sixteen percent of their female of athletes tore their ACL 's. The final collegiate conference that was tested was the Pac 10 which had less than two percent of their male athletes tore their ACL. Compared to the women athletes in their conference which had about twelve percent of their female athletes tear their ACL 's. The statistics mean that on average more female athletes tear their ACL 's than men.
There are several factors that explain why more females tear their ACLs. One factor could be the lack of equipment that women get for their sports. Baker explains that
ACLs are one of the easiest injuries to get for athletes and average people alike, and a lot of people don't know what the ACL is or how to treat it until they tear it.
Sports are great to keep you in shape and to have fun but there is also a heavy risk of getting injured. Injuries such as pulling a hamstring or breaking an arm can lead to many complications. There are 2 injuries that are pretty common but they are some of the worst injuries. That is an ACL tear and a concussion.
Studies have also shown that women in particular, unfortunately have a disadvantage in life when compared to male counterparts, and that is one pertaining to their higher risk for ACL injury. Due to a neuromuscular imbalance that is concomitant with overactive quadriceps strength compared to hamstring strength, females tend to place more stress on the ACL. Accordingly, this increases the pressure on the ACL leading to a higher prevalence of injury that will arise more on the female spectrum than that of the male (Myer et al., 2009). Furthermore, this is important to be aware of for female athletes and for the Physical Therapists who treat them in efforts to provide educational information regarding the relationship of stronger hamstrings correlating to a lesser chance of ACL injury. Personally, I have worked with athletic females in the past as a personal trainer and while I was not strengthening hamstrings with the direct objective to prevent an ACL injury, I was cognizant of the notion that a balanced quadriceps and hamstring ratio was necessary to avoid lower extremity injuries as a
Lowering this rate would allow female athletes of all levels to have a lower probability of ACL injury. Sex difference has proven that female athletes are more likely to have an ACL injury than males. Since we are unable to change our sex (intrinsic factor), the focus must then be placed on the factors that can be modified. A list of these factors include: preparation, skill acquisition (from a young age), and playing style (Ireland, 1999). The factors listed are all controllable extrinsic factors, focusing on these and the partially controllable factors could aid in the prevention of ACL injuries in
Whenever an athlete participates in a sport, whether it be practice or a meet/game, they run the risk of injuring themselves. When it comes to basketball, Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are common. ACL tears are more likely to occur in female basketball players as opposed to males. In basketball, speed, strength, and power are the most important physical qualities to develop. Sometimes an athlete may be lacking in certain areas which puts them at a greater risk for tearing their ACL.
The anterior cruciate ligament, more commonly known as ACL, is the most common knee ligament injury. An ACL injury mainly affects athletes or those participating in athletic activities. Over the years, sports have become more popular which has led to an increase in ACL injuries. This increase led orthopedic surgeons to create many operations over the past fifteen years that reconstruct this ligament.
Mechanisms of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury are numerous. These injuries plague both athletes and non athletes. ACL injury is most prevalent (1 in 1,750 persons) in patients 15-45 years of age. It is more common in this age group in part because of their more active lifestyle as well as higher participation in sports.
A torn ACL is a injury in which also is a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the knee. When someone tears their ACL they have to have a surgery to replace it. ACL injuries range from mild, such as a small tear, to severe such as when the ligament tears completely or when the ligament and part of the bone separate from the rest of the bone. A lot of the time some of the other knee ligaments or parts of the knee are also injured. This includes cartilage such as the menisci, or bones in the knee joint they also can be broken. Your ACL can be broken during sport activities. During an activity if your leg is planted firmly on the ground then hit by a heavy/large force it could tear the ACL. Some ways your ACL can be tore is by being bent backwards,
The ACL is one of the most common injuries today, but in the past it was rare to have this type of injury. Warren states, “Whereas in the 1970’s HSS performed about five ACL procedures a year, today that number is closer to 100,000 a year.” Today it is very common for teenage boys and girls to play the same sports. According to Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of California college, “ACL injury is most prevalent (1 in 1,750 persons) in patients 15-45 years of age.” The average person is more active in the age range of 15 through 45 so this is why the ACL injuries are more likely to happen within this age gap. Department of Orthopedic Surgery, also explains, “ACL injury has an annual incidence of more than 200,000 cases with
Another reason for ACL wounds is halting all of a sudden the sudden alter in course puts weight on the knee and the ACL takes the majority of this anxiety since it's the weakest part of the knee. Backing off while running additionally puts weight on the ACL in light of the fact that it's like halting abruptly. Arriving from a bounce erroneously is another illustration of an ACL damage, any sort of hopping puts weight on the ACL in light of the fact that it's the weakest part of the knee. Direct contact or crash, for example, a football handle any sort of impact specifically to the ACL could bring about a tear or serious sprain. (American Institute of Orthopedic
In sport an ACL injury is the most frequently ruptured ligament of the knee (Johnson, 1983), it is described by Flynn 2005 as a serious, common and costly injury (Flynn, 2005). In many cases an ACL injury is the result of noncontact and studies done by Barrett et al 1972 and Beckett et al 1992 support this as they reported that 78% and 71% of ACL injured patients described noncontact mechanisms of injury such as landing with too much knee extension or change in direction (pivoting) (Barrett et al 1972 and Beckett et al 1992) and also can happen due to contact such dominant kicking leg, fall on the knee or even a forceful blow to the knee. Bjordal et al 1997, in their findings showed that 58% and 42% of ACL injuries were
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) -injury is arguably the most common serious knee injury related to sports participation. Approximately 5000 individuals suffer an ACL injury in Sweden every year (Lohmander 2007). Individuals with a history of injury to their anterior cruciate ligament or menisci were shown to develop knee OA 10 to 20 years post injury (Lohmander, 2007).
In the sports world the word ACL brings absolute horror and cringe with it. That’s because when an ACL tears it can be one of the most painful experiences an athlete can have, especially with the surgeries and recovery it brings with it. Along with that, the ACL is in the deep part of the middle of the knee, so most of the time when you damage your ACL you most likely have damaged something else. Women especially have to worry about the overall health of their knees as they have a 4.8% greater chance of tearing their ACL than men (Musgrave). ACL tears are one of the worst injuries in the sports world and in order to recover to full health it takes time, patience, and a hard-work ethic.
The first study reviewed was a randomized control trial of treatment for ACL tears by, Frobell, Roos, Roos, Ranstam, & Lohmander (2010)
