The Tree sculpture is one of the most controversial sculptures that received many scandalous reactions from most people. The tree was installed at 11:30 am at the Place Vendome in Paris, France. The installment took place before the first day of the exhibition overnight. The sculpture was named just “Tree”, and it was approved by all Parisian organizations who oversees the installations. However, the sculpture was seen for a short-lived amount of time at the Place Vendome, as it lasted for three days before it got vandalized and deflated by one of the people who caused a scandal over the sculpture. Some Parisians, especially the Right-Wing activists, were upset with the sculpture as it is like a sex toy. The abstract tree has been a subject
In this essay, I will compare and contrast two different sculptures from two different contexts of art. The first being an Olmec Colossal head (monument 1), from the context of “Art of the Americas,” and the second sculpture being ahead from Rafin Kura. The head from Rafin Kura comes from the context of “Art of Africa.” Both sculptures come from two different time periods and parts of the world. They also are both made with natural materials and have their own symbolic meaning.
The sculpture portrays the God of Harvest, Dionysus, with his loyal satyr follower, Pan. A considerable amount of detail when into the carving of Dionysus; the multiple grapevines in his hair, his ceremonial staff Thyrsus, the goatskins and the cup of wine he’s holding are all symbols of Dionysus. The composition is very asymmetrical, and creates a contrapposto arrangement, which is distinctly Grecian (Gardner). It was carved out of beautiful fine marble, which also had another purpose in the way of making this piece of art last for many years. Along with the tree trunk between the two men providing support at the base, and the elongated arms providing more structural stability. The God’s head is even reinforced by his hair to make sure the head doesn’t break off. This sculpture is visually and aesthetically pleasing, but doesn’t serve a useful function, like textiles or furniture. Therefore, it is considered a figurative piece of art, which art that is very clearly modeled after real object or person(s), and is therefore representational
The article also acknowledges how the sculpture is a unique find in art especially in terms of how well the sculpture has been preserved and how the damage to the sculpture were minimal as compared to other similar discovered Venus sculptures. Arenas acknowledges how there are also numerous interpretations and explanations on how the arms of the Venus de Milo actually look like or what they are actually doing. The article also presents sultrier take on Venus de Milo, seeing her in all her seductive glory. Through the eyes of Arenas, there is more human, yet otherworldly perspective of Venus de Milo, one which matches romanticized women in mythology. Arenas also envisions the sculpture in relation to feminine charm and how it and the sculpture represents a severed phallus come to life. This represents social and carnal anxiety as well as longing, potency and also impotence.
The sculpture demonstrates the idea of children’s mind development. What would one growing child naturally think and imagine, and how do they perceive and describe the themes that are often sublime which us adults lack to connect. This significance retrospect to where we earlier developed our creative thoughts and character.
I took an interest in this specific piece as it reminded me of the Venus’ which are explained in the textbook. The Venus’ are thought to be made in order to appreciate a woman’s sexual being which I believe is what this piece attempts to achieve. The actual woman, who is made of metal seems to be elderly as the lines on her face and angry demeanor suggest, holds out her arms who are dripping water. What makes this piece all the more interesting is that there are screws which seem to form a necklace on her. I believe the artist depicts her in such a way that she resembles mother nature. Standing atop of a large tree whose prominent roots take place in the pool of water which drips from her hands, explain to me how she is meant to give life to that around her. But mother nature is no longer youthful, being completely nude explains not only her sexuality but also how she has aged and the distraught on her face hint at her anger with all the destruction around her. To make that point even clearer the screws in her neck explain how man made structures are now tearing into what she once was. Both art pieces left a profound effect on me, even though they were not both explicit in that
First of all, the sculpture will fill our lives with the beauty of art as citizens. For example, “the History of Public Art” article gives a background on ancient greek statues and temples, and it states that the “structures helped unite the citizens of the communities of which they stood by providing a concrete focus for national identity and pride” (The History of Public Art). For
The sculpture is classic Baroque movement because of the drama since Apollo was in love with Daphne and she turned into a laurel tree because she wasn't in love with Apollo. There's tension because of the relationship between Apollo and Daphne, it's easily interpreted, Daphne's hair and fingers as limbs of a laurel tree.
This research paper is based on a combination of architecture and sculpture, precisely the gargoyle. The inspiration for topic was grasped from a past production paper question which requested that one create a gargoyle spout inspired by a Caribbean cultural aspect. This question deeply intrigued me, providing themes for both a sculpture piece and my research paper.
I chose to observe the Marble Column with Vine Decoration. I chose his piece because of its relation to architecture because of the interest that I have in it. This column is about six feet tall and made of solid marble. It is covered with winding vines that are convexly carved and begin at the base of the column and ascend to the top. The column is situated in a corner which does not permit the viewer to walk all the way around the object easily. It is placed near other Roman and Greek objects as well as modern sculptures. Being placed near a window, it has a natural light source to highlight the natural stone and intricate carvings. By analyzing this piece of art that also served as an architectural component, it can be said that this piece
Richard Serra was born November 2, 1939, San Francisco, California. Richard is currently 76 years old, and still continues his art projects and sculptures. Richard is widely known for his colossal conceptual steel made sculptures, which grasps the attention of viewers to occupy sheer size characters of the exertion and their state. Richard is a minimalist, which is someone who through art expresses reform in politics or advocates it through music. Richard Serra is also a post minimalist, which usually uses everyday objects, simple materials, and sometimes take on a pure, religious appealing visual. Richard is a talented artist who uses art as an analogy or emblem, proposing a concept of knowledge of power, severity, space, progression, and
This Piece was created by Roxy Paine an American Artist. Some of the formal elements that are displayed in Roxy’s Piece are lines in reference to the tree branches. The shapes of the branches are irregular in the way they are looped and curved different ways. Also Roxy use earth tone colors like dark green in the grass and gray in the flooring. He also utilizes the entire space to spread out the tree branches to make it a larger sculpture. The 3D form gives the viewers the chance to walk around and through the sculpture to get a better look at it.
Our world is full of so many grandiose monuments, eye-catching sculptures, and stunning statues, each having an individual story to tell. Thousands of them have been created however, only a small number of them are actually extraordinary and picture-worthy. This paper will compare and contrast two of those picture-worthy sculptures. Furthermore, I will examine the aspects of each of these sculptures. I will compare and contrast what each of them represents, the differences in texture, their size and their tone.
Marcel Duchamp’s work “nude descending a staircase” was most likely scandalous because it wasn’t recognizable as anything real. When people saw this painting, it was the form of a women, in rough shapes, repeated over and over, overlapping. Although the painting claimed to be something sane, many described it as “an explosion in a shingles factory”. Because of it’s rough and confusing nature, many did not understand, and thus did not like, the painting. Another reason people didn’t like it was because of how the painting didn’t create movement normally. The movement it created was through repetition of overlapping shapes. Because of the chaos this caused, people hated it, calling it ‘repellant’.
Initially, when I walked up to this sculpture my thoughts were the name of the piece pretty much sums it up. Approaching the statues, they seem to just be large bronze masses on the corner of McCaul street but, as any art should be looked at, I decided to dig deeper than the superficial. The location is odd to me, mainly because the bronze forms are not alone in the corner of the building, but are not really impacted by its surroundings. The trees behind the statue are dead giving a desolate atmosphere invoking a sense of loneliness. Moreover, almost the entire area surrounding the piece is solid concrete, giving a very penitential outlook. I’m not sure if the sculpture’s initial approach is supposed to invoke miserable emotions but if so it does its job
Artworks are those that use natural tools in an aesthetically pleasing way, to express some deep meanings desired by the artist, for which this art is found. These works can be analyzed by looking at a variety of aspects individually and these elements are often called elements They are very useful for criticizing or understanding any artwork as a whole. The materials used by the artist creating the artwork in the documentary "Mystery Masterpiece", the shape of the work is the shape of which it is, including its size or its volumetric perception, and the artwork has three dimensions; the depth as well as the width and height, the three-dimensional form is the basis of sculpture, yet the two-dimensional artwork can achieve the illusion of the
