On Friday February 1, 2002, in Sabre Springs, San Diego Brenda Van Dam went out with a few lady friends of hers. Damon Van Dam stayed home with the children; seven year old Danielle and her two brothers. At around 10 p.m. Damon sent the children to bed and then he also went to bed. Brenda returned home around 2 a.m. with a few friends. Her husband got up at that time to socialize with her and their guests. The friends all left around 3 a.m. At that time both Brenda and Damon went to bed without checking on the children. They assumed all the kids were in their beds asleep (Perry, 2002). The next morning around 9 a.m. they family was around the table eating breakfast. Brenda went to go wake up her daughter and that is when she …show more content…
Upon searching his R.V. they found hair, blood, and a finger print that belonged to Danielle. Later on they had discovered that Westerfield had taken two comforters, a jacket, and two pillow covers that had Danielle’s blood on them to a dry cleaners (Perry, 2002). Westerfield was arrested on February 22 for the kidnapping of Danielle. On the 27th of February Danielle’s body was discovered, decomposed and naked, under a cluster of trees near a busy road, East of San Diego. Turning the charges into a murder charge, where he was found guilty and sentenced to death (Perry, 2002). In this case there were four crime scenes all together, the Van Dam’s residence, Westerfield’s home and R.V. and where they found Danielle’s body. Upon arriving to the crime scenes, the first responder would secure the scene to make sure the scene was safe. Safety is the first priority when going to a possible crime scene (Young, 2011). While officers search the area for a suspect another officer will obtain the preliminary information from the witnesses. Once the scene is secure the forensic team and investigators are notified (Young, 2011). The forensic technician will record the date and the time the call-out was received. The forensic technician will meet with the investigator and will be briefed about the incident that occurred. The tech will record the time they arrived at the scene and when the briefing commenced. After the briefing has
Describe three ways that a crime scene can be recorded. What is a benefit of each?

By now the crime scene has been labeled a homicide and detectives have been dispatched to the scene. When the detectives arrive the lead officer will then provide a detailed crime scene briefing to the detective in charge of the scene. This briefing will be the only opportunity for the detective to receive the initial aspects of the crime scene prior to subsequent investigation. Since the crime scene and any/all evidence collected are the key factors in making a case, the crime scene must be documented as soon as possible including, appearance and condition of the scene upon arrival, lights on/off, shades up/down, doors, windows open/closed, any unusual smells, ice, liquids, weather conditions, temperature, and any personal items that may have been left behind. Once the lead detective has been briefed and evaluates the scene him/herself, he/she will then need to determine if consent to search and/or obtaining a search warrant is needed. The scene assessment allows the lead detective
Upon arrival at a crime scene you will need to speak with the lead officer or lead crime scene investigator to find out what allegedly happened at the crime scene. There are certain precautions that are taken at crime scenes to preserve evidence. First you will have to wear protective gear including, hair net, shoe covers, plastic surgical gloves, suits and any other items that are required to prevent scene contamination. This gear will also help protect you against any health hazards that may be located in the crime scene such as blood or tissue contaminates. Before entering a crime scene be sure to look for protective plates that are put in place to
The crime scene was demolished when John Ramsey brought his daughter upstairs. The family was not immediately separated and interviewed. (5)
The crime scene is actually in two places because it starts at the resident of the Van Dam’s which is where the initial crime occurred in the room of Danielle van Dam. From this point officer’s should be able to gather some evidence of the type of crime that happened and start to collect all of the apparent evidence. To see if anything was left behind to see if a comparison can be made as to who have all been at the Van Dam residence to analyze and question all to find who could or would want to kidnap Danielle. The second crime scene in question is the home of the Van Dam’s neighbor David Westerfield because it was discovered that he was the main suspect of the kidnapping of Danielle van Dam. There was some of Danielle’s DNA at the home of Mr. Westerfield in which it was stated that she was being held there after she was abducted from her home. Once the police were called by the parents of Danielle when they discovered that she was missing. The next crime scene is the motor home of David Westerfield was stocked with supplies on Saturday morning when he left his home minutes after Brenda Danielle’s mother called the police to report her daughter missing. The motor home became the main crime scene because it yields the most evidence and it is where the crime of kidnapping and murder occurred just from the trace evidence that was left behind by the victim such as blood stains, fingerprints and hair
A child pageant star was found asphyxiated with craniocerebral trauma in the basement of her own house on the day after Christmas in 1996. Her name was JonBenet Ramsey; she was a six year old girl who lived with her mother, father and brother in Boulder City, Colorado. Her death shocked the public and the murderer has yet to be found. Many blame the mistakes the detectives made during the investigation and her case has gained more recent popularity due to the fact that it has been approximately twenty years since her unfortunate demise.
This is important because clearing the scene of possible suspects and protecting the scene is safer and more effective with multiple law enforcement personnel present. The first responding officer needs to be looking for suspect vehicles as well as potential suspects as he or she approaches the general vicinity of the crime. The responding officer must also take notice of individuals acting suspicious or lingering at the crime scene. They could be witnesses or even suspects. Suspects in a homicide sometimes stay in the area to gain information on the initial investigation or intimidate witnesses. Another important fact to remember as the first responding officer is that most homicides are committed by acquaintances. It is tough to accept, but a friend or family member at the scene could be the perpetrator of the crime. (Lyman
Over the next few days dozens of people who had seen Debbie the night of her murder went to the station where they were interviewed, gave blood and hair samples. The investigation seemed promising, but months later leads began drying out and detectives found themselves back at square one.
" On July 29, 1994, seven year old Megan Kanka, from Hamilton Township, New Jersey, was walking home after playing at a friends house. She had almost reached her front door when Jesse Timmendequas, 33, a landscaper who had lived across the street for a year invited her over to pet his new puppy ( Richard 1 )." " When Megan followed him inside, he led her to an upstairs bedroom, strangled her unconscious with his belt, raped her and then asphyxiated her to death with a plastic bag. Timmendequas then placed Megan’s body in a tool box, drove it in his pick-up truck to a near-by soccer field and dumped her body in some bushes ( Jerome 1 )." This, and the tragic murder of Amanda Wengert, was how the name was developed. But in my paper I did not discuss the murder and raping of Amanda Wengert.

Technicians need to coordinate and communicate with police officers at the crime scene. They need to note, sketch and take pictures of every piece of evidence. Once that is done than they will send the evidence to the crime lab so they can investigate more. They will make detailed and submit accurate reports and documentation for court
She started a relationship with another man to escape the abuse she was suffering. She was murdered for this. In the recent year, 2013, an investigating officer on the case, DCI Caroline Goode, spoke out about how this case unravelled and the important evidence using mobile forensic analysis finding the body of the victim, which helped with the prosecution of the four members of the family. In this instance, the use of mobile forensic analysis was the turning point in this case.
Powell used 10 gallons of gasoline to ignite the fire, two-five gallon cans were found in the home. One of the cans were found with the bodies, and the other can was believed to have been used to spread troughout the house. There were accelerants all throughout the entire house. This is believed to be premeditated because Powell sent emails to family, friends, and his attorney "forshaddowing" his plans. Powell gave the children's toys away a few days before their day for visitation. Investigators believed that the point of origin started somewhere near the center of the home and was set immediately after the children entered the house. Powell's breaking point is believed to have been at the las cour hearing where the judge ordered the Coxes to retain custoday of the children and also ordered Powell to undergo a psychosexcual evaluation before he could recieve supervised visitation once a week. More damaging evidence was found on Powell's home computer, where investigators found child pornography. The final piece to the Powell puzzle was that when Braden was 2 years old, during a preschool summer camp, he drew a picture of a camping trip. In this picture he drew both he and Charlie in the back seat, Josh was driving, and his mother Susan was in the trunk. When he was asked why she was in the trunk, he simply said that he didn't
Having been briefed on the nature of the incident, the forensic investigator will conduct interviews of the database (DB), Email, and network administrators to determine what she knows about the chain of events leading up to the receipt and subsequent
