Multimedia Trends in Cyber Journalism
Multimedia can be defined as the media in which spatial data like text, image and sound are merged with temporal data ( voice and video ), by means of a unifying objects- the computer. A much broader one with the accent on the transformation of the media could be suggested. In this light, the multimedia revolution is seen to result from the development of the following three types of media:
1) Computer : thanks to high – level language such as Hyper talk, Lingo and Java, multimedia producers no longer need to be computer experts to created documents which combine text, sound and image on a compact disc-read only memory (CD-ROM), CD-Interactive (CD-I),
Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) or the internet.
2) Digital video: television is moving towards interactive television and video on demand, offered by cable distribution networks.
3) Network superhighways carrying internet traffic and the information of the future ,on which all kinds of interactive services such as electronic mail, voice telephony and videoconferencing, electronic commerce are already flourishing, and soon, perhaps, television on demand. Multimedia can be said to be a result of the convergence of several ‘traditional’ industries, mainly computer science and communication, and the’ content’ industries, such as the audio visual, publishing, sound recording and media industries.

In this report I will evaluate the different formats by giving the benefits and limitations of using the Web, Multimedia (CD’s, DVD’s and so on.), Interactive T.V and Mobile Devices as formats for interactive media products. Each benefit and limitation will be explained with some examples for each format of interactive media products, finally I will give a summary and conclusion for all the formats at the end of the report.
With the advent of information technology, the ways different aspects of life work and operate have changed a great deal. Media has always had a great influence in molding the culture of a society. There was a point of time when television and radio were invented and when computer was invented and there was little connection between the two. Time then travelled fast then through the age of cassettes, records, VCDs, DVDs, flash drive and then the internet. Media also started to go satellite on a massive scale and there came a point of time when media and digital communication systems became closely integrated with one another, opening the dimensions to digital media.
However, in the era of the Internet, the market has changed. Cable television has been challenged by many alternative venues of media consumption, most notably in the form of the Internet. "There has been some competition from satellite TV players and (in a few areas) TV over IP" (Masnick 2008). "Thanks to the rise of Netflix, Hulu and hardware like the Roku box and Apple TV, cutting the cord to cable TV doesn't mean cutting yourself off from your favorite shows and channels" (Glaser 2010). However, most high-speed Internet consumers receive their Internet connection from the cable company, which indirectly funnels money to support cable TV.
Media changes drastically over short periods of time because of digital convergence. Just in the past decades it has become much more advanced and useful for people all around the world. There has been an extreme advance in media technology, especially that used in film industry. This includes the creation of analog-to-digital converters, technology convergence, and the changes in the media industry and audiences. In this article, I will analysis how digital convergence impact on the film industry structure, forms of consumption with the innovation of revenue models and cultural production.

The advancement and development in delivery of media content has also affected the audience’s behavior in certain manner. The term media convergence with regards to technology is defined as a process of combining together the telecommunications and computers and turning them into one electronic or digital form. The media convergence has affected our everyday life as we know it in many ways, you can now watch television shows, listen to music and shop online using your computer all without leaving the privacy of your home. The landscape of television has undergone major shifts over the last five years. In 2013, cable companies like Time Warner and Comcast, pulled over 100 million subscribers (Udland) total subscribers. By 2015, that number dipped below 100 million subscribers decreasing by one percent (Udland). In 2013, streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, totaled over 40 million subscribers (Udland). By 2015, they saw a 30 percent increase in subscribers (Udland). While cable still holds dominance in the market, the latest trends have shown that streaming services will overtake them in the near future. Streaming services’ surge in popularity is a result of having a product that provides a superior alternative to cable that accommodates the customer.
With the sophisticated nature of technology being used in media devices together with its importance in communication, it is no wonder that media technology usually emphasizes on the power of the latest media and how it affects the society. Henry Jenkins describes convergence as ‘a situation where multiple media systems coexist and where media content flows fluidly across them’ (2006: 282). An important part of the information transferred across platforms are the techniques utilised in creation. Digital technologies have no doubt had a large impact on moving images and how they are developed and produced in the modern world. There has been the introduction of inexpensive consumer digital recording devices, and the ability to create a video with mobile phones rather than needing a separate dedicated device. This has led to growth in the creation of amateur moving images on platforms such as YouTube in a variety of forms. As well as inspiring the creation of new areas of production, digital advances have enabled further evolution in more traditional areas. Early cinematic pioneers dabbled with in-camera trickery in order to create fantastical scenes and amaze viewers, and this principle carries forward to today. Matt Reeve’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) is a good example of the intriguing applications of digital technology in order to achieve these old goals in a potentially better way. As with the introduction of any new way to achieve a goal, the opportunities available to content creators have multiplied with the growth in the variety of digital techniques. Information and entertainment today are usually spread through the development of technology. Due to this, various medias enable us to give and receive information. Media can be divided into traditional media and new media (Christian, 2014). While it is easy to pinpoint the differences of the two medias, there are also some similarities that tie both medias together.
What do we really mean by television? The way we watch television has drastically changed over the last fifteen years due to new technologies such as digital television and services providing on-demand access. These drastic changes have had a huge effect on viewers and have “allowed online streaming platforms to dominate and revolutionize the way the audience consumes” (Aliloupour) media, ultimately allowing the viewer to be in total control of how, when and where they want their content. The idea of only being able to watch television on a television set is now a thing of the past. Due to technology, the audience now has a vast variety of options on how they can access content. By using scholarly articles, research in new media and Internet sites I will be analyzing current television and where the future of television will be heading.
In this essay I am going to have an in-depth look at the question “what is digital media convergence”, not just a simple answer of what it is because the question may seem simple but in digital media convergence there are several underlying convergences which make up the whole idea, in this essay I am going to try and cover what these are and what effects technologically, socially and culturally they are having on us.
