Multimodality
Multimodality refers to a theoretical framework on how people express themselves through language. It specifically describes the process of communication in the context of use of a wide range of signs, symbols or semiotics (Bazalgette & Buckingham, 2013). Through multimodality, researchers understand the use of communication media, such as visual, spatial and textual elements to create, convey and receive messages. Therefore, the use of multimedia in social media communication is effectively described on the basis of multimodality. The application of different elements of multimedia in social media communication explains the increasing popularity of Web 2.0 technologies. Multimodality is also applicable in describing how individuals perceive messages in relation to the formats with which they are presented (Zappavigna, 2012). The meaning that is represented by specific communication artifacts is also explained on the basis of multimodality.
Multimodal communication is designed to support computer applications, such as social media tools and technologies. It is becoming popular because it provides for synergy, robustness and efficiency in communication processes. It is however associated with redundancy (Bazalgette & Buckingham, 2013). Multimodality supports teaching in linguistics because it creates opportunities for the application of games and interactive tools to enhance understanding of language structures and their usage in communication. The use of a wide
Communication is a life skill and systematic process in which people interact with and through symbols in order to create and interpret meaning. Communication styles vary amongst cultures, age groups, genders, and sexualities. With our world having many different communities, values, belief systems, and communication practices, using social media has become an easier outlet to communicate with each other. Social media is a form of technology altruistically created to help people stay connected with long lost friends, family, or current peers.

The advancement of technology has limited the ability to communicate non-verbally. Non-verbal communication is the main channel of communicating as it helps in expressing and interpreting others. It comprises of cues such as facial expressions, postures and gestures. Nowadays, people are using e-mails, texts and social networking sites to interact as well as express themselves. As in “Why Gen-Y Johnny Can’t Read Non-Verbal Cues,” Mark analyzes ,”We live in a culture where young people- outfitted with iPhone and laptop and devoting hours every evening from age 10 onward to messaging of one kind and another- are ever less likely to develop the “silent fluency” that comes from face-to-face interaction” (146). The disadvantage of using technology as a means to communicate with others is people tend to lose fluency in non-verbal cues, as a result misunderstand and offend others. Any number of emoticons used by people cannot measure their depth of their feelings. Non-Verbal aspect of communication should not be replaced by the advancement of
In today’s vast globalized world, representation is present and has left its impact everywhere, from politics to media to parts of our everyday life. Representation is defined as the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way (Oxford University Press, 2016). This has shaped the way people think, talk and view the things around them. Thus, media representation is the portrayal of a group, community, person, event, idea, experience or perspective by the media, regardless of whether it is visual or verbal. Media representation is also a choice made in constructing facets of reality such as people, places, objects and events in media. Such representations exist in a multitude of forms such as print, films and writing. Generally, it would be difficult to showcase every feature of the person or thing, hence, media has been essentialising the representations to suit the views of the majority.
The multimodal text our group chose was a Pop Tart box. The box color is a deep blue that catches anyone's attention. The combinations of pictures and text make it a great example of rhetoric. Their main audience is people who are grocery shopping. The Pop Tart company is trying to entice people to buy their product. They clearly used several examples of ethos, pathos, and logos.
Over the year’s technology has evolved drastically. Technology that involves social media play a huge role in the way people interacts with one another especially when it comes to grammar. Most people communicate using their computers, mobile device or tablets. As technology is changing so has the language. Social media is one of the main forms of communicating with people. Traditional media was a one-way street limiting the ability to give any thought on the issues at hand. Social media, however, offers a two-way street effect that enables the user the ability to communicate. Social media is a great tool for both keeping in touch with family and friends, as well as staying up to date on current affairs worldwide. Social media and networking sites have become popular these days and people of all ages, denominations, color and creed are meeting online to interact at social media websites.
Language and communication between different cultures is complex; the future holds many technological promises that will make these complexities easier to bear. This dialect decline can be credited to the industrialization of communication which exploits the human interest of entertainment, which in turn, expands and simplifies human communication. Billions of people of all walks of life have assimilated to the language of modern technology and billions more are left in the dusk. “Media exposure can spread new vocabulary and give people in different regions an understanding of the “standard American.” (PBS) The internet has allowed people to communicate farther than ever before, share knowledge at light speed pace. We feel that we do not have time to type “hey that was very funny” instead we type “LOL” we have simplified terms in speech and have become accustomed to the internet world: speed equals success. Society’s entrepreneurs and astute minds are constantly

Since we live in a multicultural society, meaning that we are constantly faced with ‘the other’, we often turn to media as a source to gather information about this unfamiliar other. Arguing that media have the potential to shape people’s perception of social relations and groups, this paper contains a literature review on the relation between media and the portrayal of ethnic minorities. For my Graduation Project, I knew I wanted to focus on a social issue rarely discussed in school. A large part of my identity is my Asian-American upbringing, so I decided on a project that highlights the lack of Asian representation in mainstream media; I chose this project because it affects me every day.
With new inventions and technology gradually growing every step of the way, many channels of communication have been created. Smart phones, computers, and social media have had such an impact in the way we interact with one another. Millennials have grown in a world where face to face interactions do not have the same meaningful connections that past generations have had. According to an article which explored smart phones and mediated relationships, “We found that the majority of our respondents multitask exploring the Internet or listening to music while also texting as a stable form of social contact. This suggests that young adults are increasingly blurring the line between symbolic and material spaces rather than being mentally and physically present with the other” (Pettegrew, 2015). It has been clear how much of an impact technology has had in the way we interact and communicate with one another, and this has opened up a door for new communication studies research to be done. Technology will continue to grow, and changes in message will occur along with that growth, so as communication scholars we have a lot to study and analyze within the future. “Studies of actual interpersonal relationships and how digital media affected them over time or,
