For this Assignment, I will be analyzing an exam from my MUS351: Elementary Methods Course. This exam constituted as the midterm covering an array of topics pertaining to the foundation of teaching music to students in primary grades. I did rather well on this exam, missing only two questions. In this analysis, I will discuss how I prepared for the exam, where the question came from, the type and topic of the questions I missed. Analyzing these things will allow for me to develop a better study plan to benefit my performance on future exams. Preparation For this exam, I planned a week out to study. This is habitual for this class simply because the class took place one night a week. The preparation allowed for ample amount of time. In addition
Throughout the reading this week, the information presented in David Elliott and Bennett Reimer’s texts stressed the importance of music and more specifically, music education. “People everywhere find music rewarding, and everywhere we find people engaged in formal and non-formal efforts to teach and learn music.” (Elliott, 2014, p. 4)
The Orff Schulwerk (“Schulwerk” being the German translation for “school work”) approach to music education is one of the most commonly used methods of teaching music in the twenty-first century. This interactive method of music education is most commonly used for elementary students, but can be applied to teach secondary students as well. Developed by composers Carl Orff (1895-1982) and Gunild Keetman (1904-1990), the Orff Schulwerk method focuses on teaching students by using “elemental music,” meaning music that children are naturally inclined to make, similar to the natural way that children learn speech and language. The Orff Schulwerk method also places a strong emphasis on the areas of exploration and experience.
I. Plato, a Greek philosopher once said “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.”

Upon reviewing the Data Requirements BRD_v1.0_20160114_NMJ_Final.xlsx document there are many "tbd" and or few needs clarification. I created few samples just with 10 rows that excludes any tbd or columns or does not exists in MRE. Can this be reviewed before I generate full file. I will have header when file when full sample file is generated.

I’m actually pretty embarrassed about my performance in the practice of the spells we learned today. I actually did fairly well with the Stunning Spell. My partners and I were able to cast it at about the same time. With quick slashes downwards towards our opponents, we kept saying the incantation, Stupefy! We both also were quite adept at dodging the spells, so it took a little while for one of us to knock the other out. In the end, I won that round. It took a lot of focus, but not as much willpower. I was also holding back a bit, because I didn’t necessarily want to knock them out for long, even knowing the Reviving Charm. After getting some help from Professor Silvers to revive my partner, as I hadn’t mastered the Reviving Charm yet and the designated counter caster hadn’t quite gotten it either, we moved onto our practice of the Full
Alex demonstrated mastery of applications in context, scoring 76/80. This score indicates that she identified 76 words fluently. Alex’s performance on this assessment shows that she is able to read words in context with ease. Her miscues were visually similar to the printed word however she did struggle with decoding multisyllabic words. For example, Alex substituted vacation for vacant, estimate for estimated neighborhood for neighbors. This shows Alex attended to the beginning sounds of the word but did not attend to the ending sounds. Intervention will focus on structural analysis, specifically, morphemic

A Mathematician’ Lament by Paul Lockhart, demonstrates a musician has woken up from a nightmare and his dream was about how the community is being forced to have music education. It brings many theories and analysis in the “language of music”, which makes the educators to be more curios to listen or play music. This leads to more advance topics to train students in the primary and secondary school, as it creates more opportunities to improve in school. As Lockhart, said “Most of them couldn’t care less about how important music is in today’s world; I guess there are just music people and non-music people”; as the musician realizes that the society will never remove a beautiful art form, just like mathematics. But, today in our culture, doesn’t let the students to have a curiosity
In music there are many different successful ways of teaching music although many have flaws. Such as to much repetition, and not enough excitement. In this paper we will compare orff shulwerk, kodaly method, Suzuki, and eurythmics. All of these have different ways of teaching, and we will analyze these different methods piece by piece.
The article “The effects of music on achievement, attitude and retention in primary school English lessons” by Koksal, Yagisan, and Cekic show the impact music has in the classroom. The Article claims “best learning environment is one that includes music” (Köksal, et al. 1897). Meaning music activates different parts of the brain that coincide with memory. Through an experimental study mentioned in the article shows music has a “increased achievement in English vocabulary learning” (Köksal, et al. 1899). Memory channels are activated and students are able to retain what is being taught through the use of music. Therefore the article suggests music is a method that can be used in primary schools to exercise the mind helping students hold onto what they learn for longer periods of time. The authors argue music brings out a different level of intelligence in the classroom. However the article fails to briefly describe traditional methods, other possible methods, and possible defaults of a music learning environment jeopardizing a overall well conducted study of music used as a source of education.
Musical Performance poses many difficulties in terms of assessment. In a maths exam there is typically one answer to a problem but there are many ways to perform a Beethoven symphony, a contemporary song, a traditional tune or a jazz piece. Obviously basic concepts for a musical performance must be observed but each individual’s interpretation is likely to be different. Therefore one person’s assessment of a performance may differ to another’s. As a result a list of specific dimensions of the performance needs to be set up in order to achieve consensus and to avoid subjectivity. By following these guidelines an accurate and concise assessment can be made.
