ESSAY PLAN ASSESSMENT
My topic from module one:
Music
My broader topic:
Community
My essay thesis:
Musicians have thoroughly assimilated the internet into their everyday lives by collaborating and participating in new communities.
My introductory paragraph explaining my approach:
I have chosen this combination of topics because I am a professional musician, and have gone from not having a computer in 2001, to accessing the internet daily to find information, collaborate and find new opportunities. The internet brings musicians together all over the world. I will draw mainly on the work of Madden (2004) and Kendall (2011) to tie together the Internet, everyday life and the topic of music and community. I will be concentrating on independent musicians who are not necessarily commercially successful to show how

Information. The use of dedicated sites for the musicians to exchange information. For this section I will draw on Madden (2004) and Waldron (2012) and several websites - banjohangout.com and harmony central.com as examples to show how musicians frequently commune with peers online to find information about their craft.
2. Collaboration. The use of online websites, blogs and digital audio software for musicians to collaborate on projects and disseminate new ideas throughout online communities. In this section, I will draw on the work of Jones (2011) and Lysloff (2003) to discuss how much easier it is for musicians to find others in similar genre’s to collaborate with, particularly in more obscure genres of music.
3. Industry opportunities. I will cover the use of online portals to find opportunities in the music industry, using teaching opportunities, competitions, collaborative opportunities and touring/performing opportunities as examples. In this section I will draw on Brown (2011) and Madden (2004) and use the example of indaba.com. I will include musician’s online forum discussions as a source of
The digital age has brought innumerable benefits to society throughout the past decade. Many new markets have been created, and routes for innovation have opened, but not all industries have flourished as a result of this era. Music piracy, which is the illegal act of obtaining or distributing sound recordings without the owner’s permission, is theorized to be the ultimate downfall of the music industry. CD sales have plummeted and caused the music moguls to panic, but their worriedness might be narrow sighted. Through speculative research, it can be surmised that the act of piracy can positively influence a musician’s career, allow for new opportunities and niches in the market, and have little side effects to anyone else in the business.
I chose to write, research, and report on the powerful media entity SoundCloud. SoundCloud was established in Berlin in August 2008 by Swedish sound designer Ljung and Swedish artist Wahlforss. The founders aspired to allow musicians to share recordings with each other, but the concept later transformed into a full publishing tool that also allowed musicians to distribute their music track. Sound cloud is one of the world’s largest music and audio platform, SoundCloud lets people discover and enjoy the greatest selection of music from the most diverse creator community on earth.
“A freelance professional musician has to be willing to perform a wide variety of musical styles (folk, classical, and pop) in order to please a wide spectrum of audiences. All musical styles are worthy of equal respect since all music is tied to people’s need for emotional, heartfelt expression through memorable melodies. In order to make a living, a musician has to travel to where the jobs are and not be fixated on trying to earn an income from home” (2009).
Music can be observed as one of the oldest pieces of art and entertainment. The industry is evolving at a hasty rate, with all thanks to the exponential growth of technology. Trends have come and gone over time since media productions are compelled to accompany these changes in technology in order to keep profit. With these advancements, the experience for the music industry and the user has terrifically changed. In this essay, I argue that there has been a drastic evolution in how the way music is recorded and consumed over several centuries. Throughout this period, several pioneers have met the needs to organize craze and association of a feasible business standard for the future of the music industry.
Music is everywhere in society today – most people listen to music while they work1, or turn on the radio in the car, and of course, most popular pubs will have a live band playing on busy nights. Music permeates our everyday lives, both the individual and the collective. Despite this, music and the arts are derided as “not contributing to society” by many people. Music is viewed as a hobby – something to engage in, but not worth pursuing as an end goal. Like many other creative industries, its cultural and social importance is side-lined in favor of industries that produce more concrete societal contributions.
Musicians most often perform in group settings, and being able to connect with other musicians in a group is crucial in having a successful
Music will never be obsolete, the medium may diminish but the music will remain. These pivotal issues are where we as individuals who become formally educated in the industry work to keep it afloat. These issues range from artists not receiving or earning very little royalty payments, artists and musicians having a harder time becoming mainstream due to the ease of access to technology, cancelled concerts because of low ticket sales, and rising ticket prices and inflation from resellers; The list is vast. The key to researching one of these fascinating topics is first identifying my goal for the research. In finding a topic that I believe progresses the industry I need to present a diligent case study that I nurtured. At first, I thought about building a new module to the form new standards for RIAA Certifications but then I realized that Adele has sold over 7 million copies of “25” and is currently number one on Billboard. This is the follow up album to “21” that never left the charts before her next album was released. I also recalled a night of watching a jaw-dropping episode of Scandal only to have Beyoncé unhinge what was left of my mandible when she released “Beyoncé” out the clear digital skies. It appealed to me because I can recall as a middle schooler anticipating first week sales of my favorite artists. I am not sure if that was normal 11 year old behavior but I will own it! We can agree that most of these artists possess a unique spark that allows them to prevail against the negative elements, so researching their creative footprint would not necessarily benefit upcoming artists as having a niche of their own is key. In my navigation through technology and my observations of the industry I have noticed a general upset when it comes to award shows as it pertains to nominees and
In the magazine article, “How The Web Changed Music Forever”, Veronica Majerol describes how over the years, music and the way it is dispersed has changed alongside the evolution of technology. Long before the internet existed, “If a band was lucky enough to get a record deal, it gained access to a label's vast resources and connections.” which then allowed their music to be broadcasted on radios around the world, played in jukeboxes, and made into records. The mid-1990’s changed all of this when people began discovering the internet; new opportunities surfaced with this development. Disaster occurred for the record industry once the vast majority began using the internet to illegally download copyrighted music; listeners no longer needed to
The music activity organization has been regarding hype through accomplishment, big difference through success, this negligible look and feel of being this globally loved craftsman through becoming probably the most adored craftsman connected with anybody. On-line social networking has brought this search for the deplete connected with acclaim to some sweeping completely new volume of equine crap. Next to washing through the organization EDM arena, faking ones ubiquity with regard to profit is presently solidly saved during the whole business.
Examine the development of the music press from the 1970’s to the present day compare and contrast the changes which have come into play with the developments of online magazine format.
Community music is an ancient practice of social entertainment performed by musicians in venues that are either indoors or outdoors, large or small. Community music repertoire reflects a community’s cultural values, beliefs, and behaviors (Veblen, 2007). Veblen states that community music has been internationally researched for the past 100 years; yet there is little agreement among researchers because community music varies in all societies such as characteristics of musicians, conductors, repertoire, and
Nothing is more enjoyable than listening to your favorite song. All over the world, people listen to music on a daily basis. Music plays a major part in a tremendous number of people’s lives. While they are enjoying the music, they do not think about how the song came about. Music is not just the sound you hear or the voices in the background. People do not think about what is behind the scenes of where music comes from. Before the song is completed, someone has to make it happen. In music, there are different careers which are the song writer, the manager, the marketing executive, and the produced. Each of these careers play a huge role in how music is brought to the public.
The end of the 20th century introduced two new concepts that would be some of the most defining revolutions of the early 21st century: digital music and Web 2.0. The vast increase in websites emphasizing user-generated content and interoperability rapidly created an era of collaborative tagging, and the nearly simultaneous eruption of the mp3 music file format assured that music
The music industry has been around for over two centuries (PBS). Its volatility can be measured by its ability to shift and change according to its time period, the technologies that arise through the ages and the public’s shift in musical taste. The music industry is comprised of many different components, organizations and individuals that operate within it. Some of these components include the artists who compose the music themselves, the producers that engineer the sounds created by the artists, the companies that handle distribution and promotion of the recorded music, the broadcasters of the music such as radio
During the progress of creating the website it was decided to design something that relates to the author, which would be useful for the author career path. The production project will benefit the author to develop and understand more about the music Industry business and social networking.
