Followers of Islam believe in full submission to God and this submission is practiced in the secular realm (Taha, 114). Of the five pillars of Islam, one (the zakat) has a direct affect on economic policy and ethics. With the ever increasing diversity in America it is imperative that nurses have a general understanding of differences within cultures. The Islamic culture is one that is increasing rapidly. To date there is an estimated 8 million Muslims in the USA. The article is about an bicultural couple who are giving their daughter (Aliya) the choice of picking which culture she wants to express, whether it be her mother’s (Krista’s) American culture or her father’s (Ismail’s) Muslim culture. Much to the dismay of her mother, Aliya chooses her Muslim culture on the basis that she wants to begin wearing a headscarf. While Krista doesn’t mind Aliya’s choice, and even advocates self-expression, the appearance of a white, blonde lady dressed American-like (jeans and a tank top) with a young child in a headscarf doesn’t quite paint your everyday picture of a normal family; especially when going to the grocery store. Krista’s main concern for Aliya is what others may say regarding the choice she has made

Muslim sub-cultures also have a difference of opinion when it comes to women being educated or having knowledge of politics. It is a problem that women in Afghanistan do not know about their country’s politics, let alone global politics. This is especially important in a time of war or conflict. The opinions of Muslim women are, for the most part, “absent from public debates” and work needs to be done to inquire about the diverse opinions of Muslim women (Ryan 1046). Furthermore, girls being educated, starting at an early age would help in diminishing this problem by knowing how to read and write. Afghanistan’s women still straggle distantly in the wake of a strong margin of the women around the world in terms of communicating their political

This piece of clothing to act as a contributor of modesty, and to display religious acclimation. Saudi Arabia, a Middle Eastern country that has enforced the hijab, has allowed for the western media a suppressive occurance to follow and distribute to the western world. Through the Sharia law, which are laws based off of the fundamentals of the Qur'an, Saudi Arabia has required all women to wear a full burka, to stay modest. In this country, the women do not have a choice to wear this covering, so it is perceived by many that all Muslim women must wear it. This, however, is not the case. In the Qur’an, it is stated that women must be modest, and should use their garments in a respectful manner to achieve their modesty. It is not stated that women must wear the hijab, or the burka to have their whole body concealed. In many countries with Muslim populations, such Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, and even the USA, women are not forced to wear a body or head covering, and may decide not to wear the hijab by finding alternative ways to be modest. (PBS. 2018. Wearing Hijab.). With the use of the hijab throughout much of Islamic culture, it is shown as a symbol of a woman's faith. The depiction of women wearing the hijab in Saudi Arabia and Iran make it appear that the hijab is worn by all, but this has failed to hold true in many countries that

For my paper I decided to choose the religion of Islam. I decided to pick this religion because of its fast growing rate. It is also different from what I am used to growing up with, so I was interested in learning more. I had learned some basic facts after the 9/11 event, but the Muslim religion and culture was still a mystery to me. Picking this topic has helped me learn more about Muslims and will help me better relate to them in my future work.
