National Socialism, also referred to as Nazism, and fascism have often been summed up as being both similar and yet entirely different concepts at the same time. Often times, people may even confuse the two concepts for one another through common association. However, it’s important to note that while these two concepts are similar in some strong ways, there are also different aspects of both, so the first statement isn’t necessarily incorrect. It’s important to note the history of both concepts in order to understand each one as a separate entity. First and foremost, Fascism gained popularity between 1919 and 1945. This notion argues that by ruling under democratic ideologies, crisis and weakness would likely occur as a result. Furthermore, another important concept of Fascism is the fact that the movement was initially rooted into the notion of nationalism. Much of Mussolini’s rhetoric revolved around restoring Italy and expanding Italian territories. This expansion was justified through reasoning explained as asserting strength and power in order to avoid the demise of their nation. It’s through this concept that there are some similarities and differences between Fascism and National Socialism, which I’ll further discuss later on. The Twenty-Five Points Program of 1920 outlined key topics, including the unification of Germany, the abolition of the Treaty of Versailles, improving the general welfare of German citizens, along with classify that only those born of German blood were true German citizens (thus denying citizenship to any Jewish German person), along with outlining a new meaning for freedom of religion, under which Judaism had been specifically pointed out as not falling in line. Many of the terms mentioned within this program were implemented into the Nazi regime. The most recognizable difference is then, the fact that National Socialism has a racist character, for which the original aspects of Fascism isn’t said to have embodies. This isn’t to say that over time, Mussolini hasn’t adopted some racist characteristics within the Fascist regime, these adopted characteristics are often blamed on Italy’s ties with Nazi-Germany.
