In a lot of the winters and summers growing up I would walk down the same path through the northern woods down to the lake. In the summer it was gorgeous, the trees are in full bloom and you can hear the leaves rustling in the wind and crunching under your feet. Walking down that path was always my favorite in the winter though, all the trees are bare and every branch has snow and ice on it and it seems like you can just see through the woods forever because there’s nothing blocking the view. Once you get down to the lake and walk out onto the dock it’s such a gorgeous view. The ice frozen over, the trees surrounding covered in snow, all the other houses and docks. Visiting my grandparents is one of my favorite memories growing up. I loved going to see my grandparents because everything was just so different from where I lived, and they will always be some of my favorite people to see. I would always stay in the same little guest bedroom that they had and my grandma would always try and set up the tv for me in their every time. My grandparents liked birds, they even have a clock in their kitchen that has a different bird for every hour. I never really found birds interesting but when I would sit at their kitchen table and look out the big window that overlooked part of their yard, suddenly I was interested just like them. I would watch the hummingbirds come up to the window and drink the juice that my grandma put in a feeder for them, or use a pair of my
My grandma was my best friend when I was young; I couldn’t wait to go see her. Being her only granddaughter I was secretly her favorite. She would have lots of yummy treats when I would visit her and when no one was looking she would sneak me a few
I special moment I have had with my grandma was the time we went fishing with my cousins . I was maybe 7 or 8 years old and I was trying to get a fish and a big turtle came and snapped my line . Grandma and Grandpa are probably some of the most amazing people in the world. I am really blessed to be so close with grandma and grandpa. Both distance wise and relationship wise. I don’t even know where to start. Between all the cooking lessons, rock shows, R.V. shows, birthdays, track meets, concerts, holidays, dinners, snakes, shopping trips and so on I have a lot of ground to cover in not a lot of time. I’ll start with the cooking lessons.
My grandma had survived a hard life, and yet managed to raise four responsible, well-educated, and successful children. All this she did while working as a respected psychiatric nurse and a state mental health board member. Although she had had and was still overcoming trials in life, I always knew she would be there and cared about me and my life. As my brother and I grew older and were unable to visit my grandparents as often as we
Every thanksgiving I would go to my granny house house on my daddy side to eat, chill, and joan with that side of the family. Then a couple hours later when everybody's starting to leave I go to my other granny house. Since she and my grandpa has passed it doesn't seem like thanksgiving without them being here.I loved going to see them and the other side of the family that I haven't seen in awhile. There was always a holiday party she threw every year. Every year my granny knew I loved her cheesecake so she would put up a whole one for
Some of my favorite moments with my grandfather were how we always did everything together. I was glad I lived with my grandparents. Stuff with my actual family weren’t the best, because they thought they couldn’t handle me. My grandfather and I had so much fun throughout the years. We enjoyed going for ice cream the most. We always had the same ice cream every once in a while, but occasionally we would change it up a little. We usually grabbed chocolate ice cream for a treat, but sometimes we would decide we want a twist ice cream. I loved spending time with my grandfather.
As I became older I would stay with my Aunt almost every weekend. She would take me to do many things I never did with my parents such as going to the movies, eating out at nice restaurants and shopping. She was my Miss.

Also, on major holidays, my family once again headed over to Grandpa’s house to watch the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. His backyard was located just off the Detroit River, so the fireworks show could be seen flawlessly. When the show ended, we always counted on Uncle Dewey to have a few more fireworks tucked away to keep us children entertained for at least a little while longer. Another activity we did before everyone departed on Sunday evenings was gathering around my grandparents to listen to their stories. They taught us different parts of our family history, by telling about their parents who unfortunately passed away several years before.
When I was 10 years old going to my grandparents’ house was a cause for celebration. There was so much space outside to run and play with my two older sisters. We would play for hours until we’d be called in to spend time with our grandparents which could be just as interesting and entertaining as the outdoors. My grandfather, Jim, would tell us stories about his life in the Navy. One story I can still remember vividly to this day.
I distinctly remember the weeknights at his house. Sitting upon his lap, walking down the street, getting pulled in my wagon through a park--these were things I loved doing with Grandpa. I was not just another person to him: I was the ultimate grandson, and I was special.
It is no doubt about it that everyone has somewhere that they have adapted to long enough to call it there home! A place they can relax and really be their selves, for some it may have been their grandparents house, aunties house or wherever they felt comfortable. Well I of course felt comfortable in my own home, a four bedroom house on the west side of North Miami. My home in Miami was perfect I had my own room, I was very comfortable there, and it was a place to get away from the world.
Walking through the trail full of mud and leaves always made me think about my life. It was always there when I needed to walk and get things off my mind. Looking around watching the leaves fall off tree after tree flying like butterflies, all different colors. When they stopped, they immediately died and they were not coming back alive again. Piled leaves filled up under trees and children ran and jumped on them like they were pillows. These trees tripled the height of humans with numerous branches holding hundreds of leaves. While walking the river flows and it is such a beautiful view with the sun shining right off of it. The ducks and little birds chirping and floating through the smooth water puts a joy to my face.
Quick and easy-to-use transportation has created the ability to travel worldwide many times in your life. From airplanes to boats to cars to trains all the way to buses, it is hard to not travel around the world, which it makes it difficult to choose one spot as your all time favorite place to be. But luckily in my life, I know that Sydney’s Frozen Custard on the shores of Lake Superior in Grand Marais is my favorite place to be.
Some of the many memories I carry with me every day of my grandmother are the holidays when we used to get together. I remember Thanksgiving and Easter most of all. On Thanksgiving the entire family would come together for dinner and then we would all stay at her house for the night. I remember this so well because we would wake up the next morning to the smell of breakfast and all the ladies would be gone shopping to the "After Thanksgiving Sale".
