My Friend Dahmer Character Analysis

On May 21, 1960, Dahmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Even before he was out of the womb, his parents were dysfunctional. His mother, a sufferer of severe anxiety and seizures, was “on a steady stream of barbiturates, morphine, and phenobarbital” during her pregnancy with him, later on causing his father to believe that her consumption of these medications while pregnant was the reason why their son ended up mentally ill (Lippit 2). Growing up, Dahmer did not receive much attention at all from either of his parents- his mother was constantly bedridden and struggling with her mental ailments, and his father was so enveloped in his work as a chemist he completely forgot about his family (2). He was sent to the Army by his father, but he was discharged due to his alcoholism. That withered the bond with his father after disappointing him. In an interview he once had with a FBI profiler, he stated “the guy wanted to leave, and I did not want him to.” He now had a dead human being lying on his floor, for him to have his way with. He would masturbate on to the body; he cut him up, put him into trash bags, and dumped the bags into a ravine. His parents would soon be settling for a divorce, which did not go over well with Dahmer, especially with his abandonment issues. He started drinking, which would cause him to steal to get money to buy more alcohol, which led him to drop out of college, and down a path of self-destruction. With no other choices, he joined the army where he became a cook, which is where he picked up his butchery skills. The alcohol once again got the best of him, and he was discharged from the army. The young boy would ride his bicycle around the neighborhood, and pick up any road kill he could find. Dahmer would then dissect the deceased animals to observe their internal anatomy. My Friend Dahmer is a graphic novel by Derf Backderf that told the story of Jeffrey Dahmer (serial killer) troubled beginnings as a teenager. My reaction to reading My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf was that it was an interesting read and something different than what I am used to reading. Unlike the rest of the novels and books that I have read in the past, this book was full of graphics that illustrated an idea of what I have read. I have never read a graphic novel before so reading My Friend Dahmer was easier to read and more enjoyable. Although this was my first encounter with a graphic novel it was easy to follow the “left to right” format. This single individual grabbed the attention of the entire nation and brought to light the idea that no one in society should be trusted. Although Dahmer presented himself to be a normal yet quiet man, the horrendous details of this 23 year old case are enough to frighten and test the paranoia of many. Jeffrey Dahmer aided in destroying America’s trust in society through his unmerciful ways yet calming and seemingly normal demeanor.
