I usually do not ask myself about what lies forward in my future ahead. We do not realize how goals can be important and exciting in our lives. It is a distinct thought that we do not often ask ourselves “where am I headed and how will I get there?”. Our goals make us who we are and what distinguishes us from other people. There are moments in our life where we have time to think about what lies ahead, and when we do, we worry how we are going to pursue to head to the direction. There are many pathways to endure it, but it depends all on your mindset that you believe. It builds so much negativity inside that sometimes it can possibly make that person break down a little. Procrastination is a voluntary delay in a task despite knowing the consequences. It has become a typical human characteristic. I always stress over the smallest tasks and thoughts because of procrastination. It would help with building accountability and I will also avoid building up fear over upcoming deadlines on projects such as this one and hopefully not any more projects.I find myself demanding to stop procrastinating. People who procrastinate seem to less likely to graduate and more likely to stress over even the smallest projects assigned. Once I can get past procrastination, I will be able to harness the fear within me and be able to finish my assignments more thoroughly and efficiently. The most substantial obstacle is taking no action at all. It is one of the biggest obstacles to overcome in order to make a change in a new behavior. My strategy to overcome procrastination is preparing such as gathering supplies, seeking a tool and making a plan. Avoiding to overanalyze what I need to do and keep it manageable. To begin with, there are many factors that contribute to my procrastination. The first reason that I blame my procrastination on is being lazy. As stated in the article, Procrastination: Is Your Future Self Getting a Bad Deal, in the third paragraph, Timothy Pychyl says, “In a sense we’re passing the buck to our future self.” This quote shows that you are being lazy and giving your future self the burden of whatever task was assigned to you, instead of being proactive and completing the job. Many of us can recognize that leaving things to the very last minute is not very wise and can cause an abundance of unnecessary stress. Procrastination is self-sabotage whether it’s to pay a credit card bill, fill up gas in your car, or complete your homework. Procrastination ranges from the most miniscule task to the most significant ones so the question is why do people procrastinate? For myself I rationalize this behavior by saying I work best under pressure but through my recent discoveries I found this isn’t true at all, it was just an excuse. The heavy pressure we feel when an important deadline is approaching physically forces us to complete our work but that doesn’t always mean that our work is good. What is the importance of goals? Do goals help you plan out your future? Or possibly give you something to work for? To me goals provide a map of what I want to do, how I’m going to do it, and why I want to do it. Goals also provide a sense of accomplishment when you finally get to finish whatever you’ve been working towards. The need for goals in life is clear, because without goals, we wouldn’t get much done. Simply because of the fact that there wouldn’t be anything to work towards, and no structure to our future. One of my most important goals is to graduate college, to get a career in psychology. This goal is extremely important to me because of the fact that not many people in my family have even finished high school.
The two articles, 'The Procrastination Doom Loop- And How to Break It' and 'This Was Supposed To Be My Column For New Years' both provide much information about procrastination. One example is that it has more to do with emotion than time. In the article, written by Derek Thompson, he talks about how each of us recognizes it is important to go to the dentist, but still put it off. We look away from this because the pain is too upfront and the rewards are too small. Another example is having nothing to distract you and everything ready to go, but not writing an email back because you don't feel like it. The person that is procrastinating must first realize that they have a problem in order to find ways to overcome procrastination because they are putting their health, family and job at risk. Sometimes procrastination can get you killed, this becomes true when you put off your medical condition or you put off having that surgery you need just because you don't want to take the time to do so. We as human beings tend to stray away from the thing we do not enjoy doing, that explains why I did not want to do my junior paper because writing isn't my most favorite thing to do. Another factor that causes procrastination is fear. Fear is a very powerful emotion. Whenever someone is faced with a difficult task, they can become overran by the fear of not being able to complete it. People who succumb to this are setting themselves up for failure. Whenever someone feels as if they are going to fail, they tend to postpone the task for as long as possible. This means that they often try to avoid the task all together until completion is absolutely necessary. In doing so, the number of tasks that need to be done increases. Upon reading the article on Stress Management, I realized that procrastination can definitely cause stress in my life, unwanted and unnecessary stress.For years I have been in a fight with procrastination. I am ashamed to say that I have identified this issue a long time ago and have done nothing to get rid of it. I am even more ashamed to say that about 90% of time procrastination wins. Whether it be a simple wash the bathroom now or no more movies, not to mention take out the garbage now, I allow procrastination to win. I will always say, I can do it later or I have time. This is a negative factor that affects Time and Stress Management.
