I come from a school where the guys wear bowties and khakis and the girls dress up in a nice dress or skirt more often than not. There are more parent volunteers than imaginable and practically the whole town comes out to support the football team on Friday nights. I have lived a sheltered life so far… my parents are still together, no major deaths in the family, and if someone mentions drugs or teen pregnancy, I’m a deer in headlights. While I have lived a life that I consider to be pretty great so far, I am still aware that that is not the case for many other students in their community. My high school is a safe environment, full of students and teachers who want to be there. However, there are many students who have no desire to be there, who wish more than anything to drop out. Even so, they are expected to thrive in a school that needs police officers to protect students from other students. They are expected to thrive in a school where countless teens are pregnant compared to the handful at my school. They are expected to thrive in a school where the stairwells, the stairwells of all places, are highly dangerous places with drug deals and violence compared to my school where they are filled with messages about pep rallies and student government. While these sound like stereotypes, for far too many students this is their reality.
I enjoy going to school, so it is very hard for me to wrap my head around the idea of anyone wanting to drop out of high school. I just don’t
When freshman enter the high school for the first time it's a new and scary experience for them. It's a time where they can learn what they are interested in but at the same time it's a time where peer pressure can get the best of them. Therefor we need to get these teenagers a good grip on their morals and lives so they don't stray from the path.
Students who drop out of school usually do it over the frustration of not understanding what is going on in class or
There are all these factors that define you in high school and possibly even college such as who you fit in with, what gender you are around more, what your beliefs are, and where you're from or what places you’ve been to. For me, I have always fit in with a compact group of people that accepted me and were much like me in sense of beliefs. Unfortunately, none of my friends have been in my classes since freshman year, since I have always been proficient at the subjects they weren’t and ended up in honors classes. I feel like the only reason that has happened is because I finally feel comfortable enough and encouraged enough by friends that I now believe there is more judging of quality of work by teachers than factors like gender or sexuality that students judge. Since that belief came along education has shaped me into a much fuller person which is why I’m trying my best to knock out one year or so off college while in high
There is no excuse to dropout of college. It is so easy to do, and
The middle school I am currently working at has the highest minority rate in all of KISD. We are a low socioeconomic campus, and a large number of students I deal with come from broken homes. A large number of students only have one parent in the home, or they live with relatives. I have had students tell me they did not sleep the night prior because there was a fight in their home. I have had students tell me there was no food because mom used the money for alcohol or drugs. I have had students come in the next day crying because a family member was shot the night prior. The kids in my school also tend to move every six months, because that is when the lease is up, and the parent can’t pay the net bill. The truth is a large number of these
A school is a place that is comprised of a diversity of students. This is what makes a school so extraordinary; children of all different interests and personalities come together to learn. Though, there are many for factors that establish a school other than academics and learning. So many schools have a ranking system, where students are constantly racing to become more and more popular. There is an athletic group of students, the intelligent group, the band group, the gossip group, and many more. People feel as if they need to change themselves just to fit in. Imagine a student walking into school, changing the way they act, the clothes they wear, the food they eat, the friends they make, all in attempt for popularity. The sad truth is that these students will do anything to fit in, including drugs, smoking, or anything that affects them negatively. It is like a seperation between students based
Getting dressed each morning for school, I slip on my blazer, tighten my leather Oxfords, and pick a pair of glasses that match my outfit. Just a block away from my house, my town's high school is a two-minute walk to my left. However, I turn right and begin my hour-long commute to St. Peter's Prep. On my way to the bus stop, I always run into my childhood friends as we go in different directions. I wonder, “Why is my life so different from theirs? Do they think I'm pretentious, going to a prep school?” I don't live in a dystopian town where gunshots go off every day. However, many of my friends just don't care about school and use alcohol, drugs or sex to escape from their socioeconomic realities; the majority of my town is low-income and Latino.
In high school teenagers are able to see many different home lives and situations of others, because high schools are melting pots of incomes and citizens. I moved to Miller, Missouri from a smaller town in the southern states called Meridian, Mississippi. This town and the surrounding areas averaged about 20% of all families were below poverty level, and most of the children that I grew up with came from families that were in this category. While living there I attended most of my years of schooling among children whose parents could not even afford new clothes. Having known this a majority of my life, I never knew
Another reason why a lot of students drop out of school is simply because they don't like it. High school, through its control over many decisions that are made for students, still seems to be restrictive. Many aspects of a student's life are pre-set and cannot be changed by the student to fit his needs. For example, a student's time schedule is set every year. Every student must go the same amount of hours every year. In most cases, school is from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every day, whether he or she actually needs all the time or not. Students have to spend more time in some filler classes that they think they probably did not need to take but still had
In 1999 all schools were known as a safe place, all schools were known for being a place of learning and simplicity. Teachers have always told told their children if something bad is happening to run into a school and in 1999 this all changed. Schools are no longer a safe place, infact it's a scary place. Parents have to send their children to school everything with the fear that they might not come home. Parents will never know that when they send their children to school if someone is going to show up trying to kill everyone, just like that day in 1999. This year changed america forever for everyone. It made the school's reputation from something so protective and safe to something scary and life threatening. This even effected Bob Pfeiffer
I understand that students are going through more things than we can imagine and while their main goal is to learn in the classroom, it is important to put yourself in their shoes and realize that schools are where children come to learn how to be a functional citizen and adult in out country. When I step into a high school I realize that some students are undergoing battles that we may not know, some may be immature, but nonetheless it is a battle that means something to them. While my main principle is to teach these students some topic in social studies, it goes much deeper than
You may think that people just like to skip school because it's fun. They think there are no consequences. But guess what there are they horribly effect your look on the world and where you will be in the future. staying in school helps you to complete all your career goals.
High schools have changed quite a bit since the Columbine shooting. School security has been improved such as metal detectors, security cameras, required ID badges, enforced dress codes, and on-campus police officers. Students also have limited privileges now. Limitations on students include mandatory school uniforms and no more off campus lunches. Things may seem strict to students right now, but everything the schools are doing is for the students’ safety.
High school is hard. There are bullies, people who harass others. People who have disabilities try harder because they can't understand as well. Kids ask themselves every day: why am I in school maybe I should just drop out. These questions may feel like two sides of the same coin, but there are separate issues here: What are the legal requirements for attending school and dropping out? Even if you can drop out legally, what are the probable consequences? Every state has their own laws as to when a child may drop out. "For instance, several states allow students to leave school if they: have received their parents' written consent and have participated in an exit meeting with school officials are legally emancipated, or are attending high school part time and are either legally employed or enrolled in a private vocational school."
Will negatively affect a student's future. Bob Keeshan once said,”Children don't drop out of High School when they are 16 they do so in the first grade and wait 10 years to make it official.” Throughout the years studies have shown that in a year 1.2 million students drop out. Which leads that only 25% of High School students during their freshman year fail to graduate. Dropouts in the United States have became a very trending thing we must get to the bottom of this problem. Young adults should not be making these decisions it's time to step in.
