Purpose and Goals Statement

Throughout my job as a firefighter and an emergency medical technician I have learned that working with patients in a medical setting requires patience, compassion, and quick decision-making skills. These work experiences have guided me to develop a strong passion for medicine and a desire to begin a career as a nurse. The positive aspects of the job and the hardships I have faced carved a path that guided me to pursue research and internship opportunities that align with my goal to seek advanced nursing education. Currently, my five-year goal is to attend graduate school, become a clinical nurse leader, and work in an acute care setting. Specifically, my long-term goal is to become a Doctor of Nursing Practice in the Emergency Department or a Doctor of Philosophy and conduct research at a teaching hospital. Ultimately, I want to reach my full potential. I do not know where that potential lies yet, it may be solely as a Clinical Nurse Leader, or it may be as a DNP. I hope to find where that potential lies throughout my education and career as a CNL.
One of my first experiences as an emergency medical technician involved holding my elderly patient’s hand in the back of the ambulance. While holding his hand, I attempted to stop the bleeding from the gaping hole in his shoulder; he was shot at point-blank.
