1. My Leadership philosophy is influenced by President Abraham Lincoln and his leadership style which resounds with me on how one should act and leader others. In fact, his willingness to get out of the office and circulate around the people is one of the foundations of his leadership style and is resonated by Master Chief Cantrell as he calls all chiefs to get out from behind our desks and get to know our people. This trait along with his character as it relates to honesty and integrity align directly with how I believe a leader should act. Leadership for me is not just telling people what needs to be done, but in order to be an effective leader we must get to know those we lead and above all we must be honest with everyone around us, both …show more content…
Focusing on the big picture on why we are doing certain missions or even just getting my subordinates to understand the overarching reason on why we are doing certain things will be the biggest way for me to meet the area of; Appealing to others to share in the dream of the future. This practice under Inspire a Shared Vision will have a big impact on the success of a team, especially on large projects. Being forward looking into the future and having the sense of direction and showing this vision to your subordinates will allow them to know that you know what the goal is and where we are headed. This will allow them to also have an understanding of this vision and they will also know where we are going and what success will look like as well. The sense of the future will make them feel have a stronger sense of spirit de corps that will be seen by others. In order for me to do this I will make sure that when I am providing tasking on daily objectives, I will ensure everyone understands the why we are doing it, how it impacts our community and most importantly what the end result would be. Keeping a team motivated during long projects or even during long events can wear people down, however, knowing what success looks like and where the end result is will keep them motivated through it. This sense of the future will also give my subordinates a sense of ownership and buy-in to the goals of the …show more content…
The second area, I will be focusing on will be to ask more often for feedback from others around me on how my actions are affecting the performance of others. This Leadership Practice is found under Model the Way. This feedback will make sure that how I perceive things is in fact how others feel as well. Ensuring the values that I hold are in alignment with the organization is key to success of the team that I lead. Getting this feedback will allow me to ensure that I am still in line with this. This feedback, will also ensure that my leadership philosophy is being understood and if it is not being perceived clearly by others, this will be the information I will need to make those corrections so that I myself can lead others more
Leadership. It is something that everyone strives to achieve and is a trait that can affect every person in the smallest of ways. It is quite a unique feature, and one very hard to come by, with so many leaders nowadays in short supply. As I always like to say, “One million starts with one”. It only takes one person, only one idea, to revolutionize the way that one million people can think. A leader can open our minds and touch our hearts in ways we didn’t know possible. They can help shape the world with their ideas and the foundation of the people supporting them. Like I said before, true leaders today are in short supply. However, I can give this University a new type of leadership that has not been seen before.
I want others to be able to see my leadership philosophy at work. To do this, it is important that I be able to connect with those I seek to lead, as “The Relational Leadership Model” states, “Relationships are the focal point of the leadership process” (Komives, Lucas, & McMahon, p. 74). One way I hope to develop a relationship with my followers is by “Modeling the Way” (Kouzes, Posner, 2008). I will do this by clarifying my values and leading by example. Clarifying values is important because “To earn and sustain personal credibility, one must be able to clearly articulate deeply held beliefs” (Kouzes, Posner, 2008, p. 29). By clarifying my values, those I seek to lead will understand my mission and will believe I have a goal in mind. Leading by
Growing up, I realize the important leadership roles that should be recognized in every day life. Leadership is an important part of one's self character because when someone sees you as a leader they tend to grow more onto you so they can be like you. Part of this statement fits a powerful quote i've always lived by while being around others. "It is the men behind who make the man ahead," this quote by Merle Crowell, fits the man I've molded into, simply because I have realized in numerous ways on how my actions can impact other people's actions. My parents always raised me to believe that what you put in is what you get out. So of course, I believe that if I make the decisions to be a follower of the wrong path, then wrong will follow me as well. Instead, I choose to take the golden path and promote a better outcome for my future and hopefully other's also. Sticking to the routine of a leader builds you into an even better leader. Being a better leader, makes me a better man each day that I choose this route as the leader of my path.
When I think of a leader I look back on how many people in my life that have helped me to get where I am today. My parents are authority figures in the sense that they are the ones that showed me right from wrong. There are the administrators that helped me along my way with school and completing all of the work that I needed to in order to make my way in this long road called life. Finally there are the instructors that have shown me the ways on how to become a leader myself. When I think of the word leader I do not think of myself right away, but now that I have taken on different roles in my life I have realized that maybe just maybe that I could become my own leader.
Respect and Integrity. The understanding and execution of all three principles will allow me to successfully inspire, influence, and motivate you in the right direction.
1. I believe a true leader, leads from the front. A leader is the first in all, showing the way, sets an example to all. A leader is trustworthy, loyal and approachable. A leader will support policy and always do what is right. A leader is looked up to and promotes motivation. A leader will take care of his crew, from his most subordinate to his commander. A leader knows when to allow others help and looks for innovative ways to improve. I would follow this leader and I wish to be this leader.
There are several characteristics a person in a leadership role should portray. My philosophy of leadership encompasses characteristics such as compassion, collaboration, innovation, perseverance, and competence. I believe to be a competent leader one must be authentic to one’s self and beliefs. One must know where he or she stands concerning ethics and innovations surrounding the education field. A leader must convey understanding, be on the forefront of research, advocate for colleagues and students, and collaborate with other professionals.
There have been many things in my life that have molded me into the leader I am today. Various people and groups along the way have taught me so much about what it means to be a leader. There were so many things that impacted my life and leadership.
Many define leadership as the action of leading a group of people, but to me leadership
The essence of this book relates to how human beings communicate with each other, and especially within the Christian community. Communication is the fundamental process by which people share information, integrate and remain connected. Christians relating to one another requires certain communication tools necessary to articulate and share information. According to Muelhoff & Lewis communicating ideas, values and beliefs, “through the study and practice of communication we accomplish crucial aspects in the life of the believer.” This process of communication is a systematic process, in which information for effective communication is important.
My Leadership Philosophy consist of three major parts that can be sub-divided into many smaller parts. As a Non-Commissioned Officer I know that the mission and the welfare of my Soldiers are my main priority and I will instill that. It is my responsibility to ensure that my Soldiers are also guided to success. I believe that there are three major parts of Leadership, dedication and hard work, honesty and empathy, and confidence.
How I define leadership has mostly to do with 27 years of service in the Army and 20 of those years spent as a Non-Commissioned Officer. Simply put, I believe leadership is the balancing of two competing priorities, the accomplishment of the mission and the welfare of the people that are in your charge. Others can probably think up a million of other subcategories that go into defining leadership, but I believe those are the two over arching things a leader has to do. I see those two priorities being symbiotic because without the people I can’t accomplish the mission but without the mission I don’t need the people.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I use to be the upholder of this saying prior to beginning my studies in Organizational Leadership. I was not a person who liked change. As a matter of fact, I hated it. I could never understand why we had to change something at work when nothing was wrong with it in the first place. I thought it was stupid and a waste of time. Now, I have come to understand why change is so important. It is catalyst to improving oneself and the growth of an organization. I have become open to performing activities in fundamentally new ways, even though the old way worked just fine domestically. In my previous workplace, I was charged with heading the transition from our old software system to the new one. We would be using this new software for all of our current and future
When reflecting on my own leadership philosophy, it occurred to me that I had never purposefully outlined the qualities that I desire to demonstrate as a leader. Conversely, in the past, I have put a concentrated effort in deciding the leadership qualities that I hope to avoid. For example, I do not wish to be a micromanager. An organization can never grow larger than a micromanager can handle, thus limiting growth. When building my leadership philosophy I reflected on both leaders that I admire, and leaders that I have encountered whom I view as weak or toxic. The foundation of the leadership philosophy that I have developed for myself is; knowing my team members, utilizing the team’s strengths to accomplish the mission, and focusing on
